Our projectsfor young people, with and withoutlearning disabilities, break down barriers, help get us together and get to knoweach other.Through WATS! we’ve had lots of funand done things together. Personally, Inever thought I’d hang out with someonewith a learning disability but when I had thechance I learned that ‘We’re All The Same’young people can get past differences.‘WATS! Your BIG Idea’ put us in charge. Wehad a competition to give other groupsin Coventry a chance to change things, giving out mini-grants for £500.In GV-Youth see some of theprobs young people face in ‘WATS!The Problem?’ See what we did aboutit in our ‘Grapevine Storyboard’.Look at our project ideas, like mythbusting and our‘Tude Away’ advert! We hope it gives youideas about runningyour own projectto change minds.ThanksChloe xTheProblem? No placeto goDear WATS!,I’m a 15 yr old boy witha learning disability. I go toschool on the other side oftown to where I live. I don’thave any friends who livenear me so I sit at home allthe time. I feel lonely andwant to make new friends.WATS! say…Try your local schoolyouth club or buddyschemes like Grapevineor Play Pals, see what’son at the sports club. Getinvolved with differentpeople who like the samethings as you - its a goodstart! Don’t be afraidto try something new -you might be surprised. What do I say?Dear WATS!,There’s a girl who comesto school who has a learningdisability. She always smilesat me but I don’t know whatto say. Some of the otherkids call her names whichisn’t right. What can I do?WATS! say…We asked whatproblems youngpeople in Coventrywith a learningdisability face andhow to get overthem. This is whatthey had to say.NOT SO DIFFERENTJust because someone isdifferent to you doesn’t meanyou can’t be mates. Don’tbe scared to go over and say‘hi’. You could have thingsin common. Maybe youshould tell someone aboutthe name calling. Being nicewill help the girl realise notall young people are bullies.MAKINGCHANGESDon’t be scared- try and seewhat you have incommon ratherthan what’sdifferent. We triedit - it works!
