For the lessthan 15 million who survived thedevastating conditions on the ships, and the extremely harsh livingconditions, disease, exhaustion andslave-owner cruelty in the Americas,an undeniable and critical quest forfreedom could not remain suppressed.African slaves began a dramaticprotest against their southernAmerican owners in a movementknown as the Underground Railroad. While there wasn’t an actual ‘railroad’there was an international uprisingthat, through a highly secretivenetwork, moved slaves as far Northas Canada where they could live asfree citizens. The movement beganin Columbia, Pennsylvania in 1804by Quaker abolitionist Levi Coffinwho used railroad terminology inan attempt to confuse slave catchersas he assisted escaped slaves in theirfreedom fight. ‘Conductors,’ or personsleading the ‘passengers’ (escapedslaves) from ‘station’ (safe house)to station would eventually end at a‘terminal’ – a place where they couldfinally be free. The SouthwesternOntario UndergroundRailroad Tour ‘The RoadThat Led To Freedom’enables you to step intothe paths, the cabins, the parks, the churchesand the ‘terminals’ thatfreedom-seekers used intheir perilous escape fromslavery. Windsor Essexand Chatham-Kent weremajor entry points for slaves as theyfled from the Americas. Freedomseekingslaves poured into EssexCounty from the southern UnitedStates during the 1840s. Some settledin the small towns and townships, especially Colchester, Amherstburgand Sandwich. As the UndergroundRailroad was a beginning place inthese areas, many slaves begantheir journey at the ‘North Star,’ asCanada was known in Amherstburgand Sandwich. Still others decidedto call these towns ‘home’ andsettled here to start a new lifeand create a family.54 I visitwindsoressex.com55

Inexchange for a meal and a safe haven, free and fugitive slaves supplied andhelped build the church. The early1800s brought five Black families tosettle along McGregor’s Creek in asmall town called Chatham. It wasknown then as ‘The Forks.’ By 1850,the village flourished as a haven forrunaway slaves, and its populationbecame one-third Black.Escaped slave Josiah Hensonpurchased property in 1841 andquickly became known as a leaderor “conductor’ in the UndergroundRailroad in Southwestern Ontario.Henson was a slave in Kentucky forforty-one years. He escaped with hisfamily using the Underground Railroadin 1830. Dresden became the locationwhere this dream would come tofruition. In Dresden, he helpedestablish the Dawn Settlement –a safe refuge for former slaves, comprised mostly of Black settlers.Henson co-founded the BritishAmerican Institute, one of Canada’sfirst vocational schools. Author HarrietBeecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’sCabin, was written using Henson’smemoirs as reference.
