Speed. If you have not heard the Land owners are looking to improve the sitebefore running the event again so it will not be running this year but hopefully itwill be all systems go for 2014, watch this space for more details, or keep an eyeon the Pentillie festival of Speed website for news and where they have got lotsof links to video footage of last year’s event which makes for interesting viewing.Coming up soon is our annual AGM this is your chance to come and have yoursay as to how we are running the club and to offer to help.As usual we are in need of some fresh faces on the Committee, we have recentlyhad Jay Brown and Kevin Moyes join which is good but we could do with a fewmore to help organise things and come up with new ideas and opinions so if youare interested or want to know more then please let me or Alan Tomes know. One thing you may have noticed is that our Club Website has had an update anda fresh new look, not only that but we also have a Facebook page and even aTwitter Account, (Whatever one of those is!) courtesy of Jennie Locke who hastaken over from Barry Chapman who has been looking after the Website for thepast 3 years or so, Many Thanks Barry. So go and have a look at it and please let us know what your thoughts are.One thing that has become very noticeable over the past few years is how fewpeople actually take paper copies of event regulations and results, most peopleare now downloading them or using email for them, however it seems to be theopposite for the Magazine as most people like a Paper copy so they can read itwhere ever they want. This is causing much discussion at Committee as the Club have a Photocopier /Printer that is getting used less and less and it is coming to the point where wewonder if it is worth the club having one. One thing that does help is if we doexternal printing jobs so if you have regular or small print run or newsletter thenplease think of the Club as it will help us to keep the Clubs costs down.Well that is about all I can think of for now expect to say I hope that you allhave a good year and I hope to see you out at PMC events over the year and ifyou want an event run then please let us know and we will see what can be done.Bye for now.James EllisonPage 6 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk February 2012

EditorialAaaaaannnnnnnndddddddd here we go again, welcome to 2013, the Chineseyear of the Snake, (According to Chinese prophets, 2013 will be achallenging year for the person born in the Year of the Snake. Greatopportunities will be present but will the Snake person be able to maximisetheir considerable skills and guard against complacency and indifference?)Im sure its not the first new year greeting you’ve had, if it isthen you need to get out more quite frankly. But for many the 2013 seasonis just about to kick off and motorsport is awakening from its relativelyshort hibernation, with the first tarmac rally out of the way for the yearwith Brean completed, and a number of other smaller events either alreadytaken place or about to take place, our very own season opener isthis weekend, being the Valentines Rally on the 8 th Feb, so at all levelsthe year is starting to kick off. For more info on this one contact John Slumanwho is sorting this one out. It’s a great starter rally for both the yearand for the beginners amongst us thinking of having a go at the 12 carrallies, its designed to be a bit of fun for all levels, and will get you backin to the groove after the xmas break, so give it a go.Our main event of the season being Werrington Park is well underway inthe planning stages for 2013, with the fresh tarmac down and ready torace on, we have the building blocks in place for the next few years certainly, and its important to capitalise on that investment and to ensure thatthe event runs smoothly and maintains its well respected status in thesouthwest and indeed further afield. As many of you will already know,Werrington is one of the most highly regarded venues around the countryand we should be very proud to be associated with this venue. When talking dates, with this magazine, and indeed on the website aswell, is the PMC yearly planner, giving you the chance to look forwardsfor the year and to see what events are on locally for both the club andour regional championships within the Association of South West MotorClubs (ASWMC) who organise a variety of regional level events in theway of stage rallies, Hillclimbs, sprints, auto tests etc. If your interestedin competing across the southwest, then the ASWMC events are the wayto go, giving you the opportunity to travel as far as wales, Oxford, andFebruary 2013 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 11

Bournemouth and beyond sometimes. There are a good crowd of fellowcompetitors out there from around the region and you will meet a widevariety of people from the downright eccentric to the positively mad, allof which are helpful at all levels and will give their time and advicefreely. Or at the very least for a pint of real ale.Im keen to get a regular supply of pictures for the front of the magazine,as we can change it each month its good to be able to keep it up to date, and invariably I end up putting pictures of me in various guises on thefront at the moment, simply as I have access to these, if you have picturesfrom other events that you have been involved with and would like theseto feature in the magazine then simply email them across to me and I canincorporate them in the cover somewhere along the line, it’s a straightforwardprocess and you can claim your fame for a month at least. Its an opportunity for sponsors etc to get their name out there on the frontcover of the magazine, our coverage is surprisingly wide when you considerthat we are on line as well, so if you don't do it, then it’s a free opportunitymissed defos.. Alternatively it can be just a picture of your carin mid rebuild, or a photo you have taken on an event, the world as theysay, is your oyster. That’s me done for now I think, feel free to say hi during the year, as alwaysyour articles are what makes the club magazine great, so let us knowwhat your doing/what you’ve done/ and share it with the rest of us madbunch here at PMCCatch you all later.Alf ChanterPage 12 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk February 2012

Werrington News – January 2013Now that we’ve reached 2013 it’s time to start thinking about Werrington2013. If only! I seem to have spent most of 2012 thinking about Werrington2013. First we had the resurfacing project, followed by some minorremedial drainage work, mending the barn roof, repairing some tyre bales,I could go on... Then booking all of the people & services that make theevent happen – scrutineers, timekeepers, PA, catering, loos – that sort ofthing, then working out what improvements need to be done – how are wegoing to get cars into the currently waterlogged paddock? Can we reducethe number of tyre bales that we use in favour of using straw bales instead? All this and a full season of timekeeping too!Now it’s time to start ramping up Werrington activity – in the warm! Regsneed updating, entry forms re-writing to make then easier to download, contacting championship co-ordinators, sorting out if it’s going to be possibleto accept entries on-line are just some of the jobs on the to-do-list atthe moment. The other priority is to sort out the event advertising – local press and radio,Tourist Information Centre, the dates on our event information signsthat we put beside the roads, get Jen to sort out a Facebook event at theclub’s new Facebook page - (www.Facebook.com/PlymouthMotorClub) –and find advertisers for the programme. This is where you can help. If youknow of a company who would like to advertise in our programme pleaselet me know by e-mailing Werrington@plymouthmotorclub.co.uk. Aquarter page advert costs £50 for the weekend. We are also looking for someone to lend us a single seater racing car forthe two weeks prior to the event. It doesn’t have to be running as long asit looks great and has a Werrington 2013 sticker or two on it. I can guaranteeIt will be well looked after in a warm dry air conditioned environ-February 2013 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 13

Work starts around 9 am and we aim to finish mid-afternoon.Lots of sunshine guaranteed – I hope! If you’re interested please contacteither myself via e-mail or John Sluman at any Club event, social or competitive.Lastly, has your car got a smart Werrington 2013 sticker on it yet? If not,why not? If you would like a couple of stickers to put on your car, pleasecontact me via the e-mail address above & I’ll arrange to get them to you. That reminds me – Jen’s just bought a car and hasn’t put a sticker on ityet. Excuse me for a minute, I’ve just found another job to do. Won’t belong... see you next month.Peter LockeWerrington co-ordinator.PS. Joining the Dots, or The 12 Car Championship. Here we are after a short rest looking forward to this year’s 12 Car Series. After last year I do not intend to make any changes to the format althoughI have been asked about starting the events a bit earlier to give a bit moremilage, this does mean a bit more work for the organisers as they willthen have to do more PR work beforehand however if enough people arekeen on the idea then please let me know.As usual I intend to have a 12 Car meeting after the AGM for anyone interestedin doing the Series or just one event. As a warm up event we have go the Valentine / Beginner’s Rally on Februarythe 8 th . This is an idea opportunity to see how you like Road Rallyingbefore committing to the year. If you are interested then please let meknow. (By Text is best.)If you want any help or instruction on Navigation then please ask as Ihave lots of old routes that I can email out for you to practice on. And thisis one sport that does need practice and experience, it really is no goodopening up the 1 st envelope on the night and going what does this meanand how does this work,At least if you have an idea before had you will not get disenchanted. One important thing is to check that you have got an up to date Map.There is a new 201 out issue D2, it has got a picture of WindyPost Cross on the front of it.There are some quite major changes on it in that some of our favouriteroads are now Whites so it will affect the Navigation- you have beenwarned!Well that is all for this month. More details next time.James Ellison07533391272February 2013 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 15

CHRIS SLADE WINS NATIONAL TITLE AGAINCelebrations for the second year running, after local driver and clubmember Chris Slade retained the National Mighty Mini championship titlefor 2012. Chris became the first competitor since the early 1990,s to retainthe UK's Mighty Mini Championship title, just 3 years after startingcompeting in a PMC Autotest at Marsh mills.Setting the pace in the season opener at Oulton Park in March, ChrisSlade beat television star Kelvin Fletcher (Emmerdale's Andy Sugden),to the first podium of the campaign (see picture). He led the 12 racechampionship from start to finish, competing all over the country fromSilverstone to Cadwell park and even a night race at Donnington Parkwhere the title was sealed in fine form. Chris was delighted to win theChampionship again and now is set to move on to the Super Mighty Minichampionship in 2013.Chris, who won the crown with a race to spare at Donnington Park, wasable to watch the final race from the stands having sold his car& knowing even the best of performances from Norfolk-based rival JonathanLewis would not be enough to beat his points haul. Chris sold thecar in the pit garage following the 1 st race ,as it was well sought after havingjust won the title for the second year. Amazingly the people whobought the car immediately put it on their trailer and took it home to Yorkshire, while they were unloading it the steering arm sheared and it doesnot bear thought what might have happened had Chris raced in the finalrace that day. Losing steering going through the Craner curves at Donnigtonflat in top could have severely scratched the paint to say the veryleast!!!February 2013 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 17
