GHS Band ReceivesSuperior RatingsStudents Jacob Robertson, Claire Sanford, Dakota Young, Tiara Watson,Jarvis Benson, Iyonna Collins, and Band Director Barry Rogers display themost recent Sweepstakes Award.By Steven HugleyGSD Band DirectorOn Thursday February 28 th , the<strong>Grenada</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Symphonic Winds,under the direction of Mr. Barry Rogers,traveled down to Pearl, Mississippi, toparticipate in the 2013 MHSAA StateConcert Evaluation. The SymphonicWinds is the premier concert ensemblefor the <strong>Grenada</strong> Band Program and iscomprised of approximately 70 students.In just 6 weeks of rehearsal time, Mr.Rogers and the students prepared threeconcert selections to play for a panel ofthree judges.The band also had to demonstrate theirskills in sight reading. On site at PearlHigh <strong>School</strong>, the students were given apiece of music they had never seen. Theyhad just 11 minutes to talk about the newpiece and then perform it for a panel ofthree additional judges.After much hard work, the <strong>Grenada</strong>Band program was awarded theSweepstakes Award for the 4 thconsecutive year. The SweepstakesAward is the highest and only awardgiven to the state’s band programs by theMississippi Bandmasters Association. Inorder to receive the Sweepstakes Award,<strong>Grenada</strong>’s band program had to receivesuperior ratings from every judge atMarching Band, Concert Band, and SightReading evaluation.<strong>GUES</strong> Parents Info<strong>Grenada</strong> Upper ElementaryFacebook pageCommunicator, March 26, 2013, Page 7Visions Activities<strong>Grenada</strong> High <strong>School</strong>’sVisions show choirconsists of 49 members,with talents rangingfrom singing to dancing,to expertise in soundequipment, staging, andlighting.Visions’ most recentout-of-state performanceswere to Disney Worldand onboard the CarnivalElation cruise ship.Visions is most notedfor their outstandingChristmas and Springshows that they performright here in theirhometown of <strong>Grenada</strong>.2012-2013 captains are:Dance captains - PaigePorter and MatthewMurphy; Soprano Captain- Hannah Thomas; 2ndSoprano Captain – BethMoore; Alto Captain– Mary Courtney Self,Tenor Captain – MichaelHankins; and Bass Captain - MitchellSonesVisions members maintain an overall3.77 GPA (eight members have a 4.0)with 14 members in the National HonorSociety and 33 members consistentlynamed to the GHS Honor Roll.Members are involved in sports,cheerleading, band, yearbook staff,and serve as class officers in the GHSStudent Council.They are active members of theAnchor Club, 4-H Leadership, KeyClub, DECA, Excel Club, NNDCC,French Club, and Spanish Club. Severalmembers have the distinction of beingCongressional Award Medalist, membersof 100 Scholars, and members of MuAlpha Theta.All Visions members are also membersof 4-H Expressive Arts Club. Visionsmembers are active in FCA, as wellas, their church groups and ensembles.They perform vocally, as well as, playinstruments for their worship services.Visions competed the first of February at<strong>Grenada</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Visions show choir recentlycompeted in the Jackson Academy Invitational.They received second place in the small mixeddivision and fourth runner-up overall in thecompetition. At the Petal Show Choir Invitational,Visions received second place in the smallmixed division. Characters from the competitionperformance include (from left): Matthew Murphy(Prince Charming), Hannah Thomas (SnowWhite), Paige Porter (Apple), Beth Moore (EvilQueen), Bryant Poe (Man in the Mirror). Visions isunder the direction of Jenni Winter, director, andKim Porter, assistant director.the Jackson Academy Invitational. They most recentlycompeted at the Petal Invitational andreceived second place in the small mixeddivision.The title of the competition show wasBad Apple.
