West Norfolk is a great place to 

enjoy the sand and sea. You’ll find 

magnificent stretches of superb 

sandy beaches, combined with 

the classic seaside facilities at the 

resort of Hunstanton. 

Whether you’re seeking a quiet secluded spot to lie back and 

relax, or want space to stretch out and play games on the 

sand, the wonderful beaches of West Norfolk are sure to 

satisfy. Even in summer, there’s plenty of space for everyone. 

The combination of vast expanses of sand and extensive 

shallow sea, makes an ideal playground. Check out superb 

beaches, such as Brancaster, Old Hunstanton or Heacham. 

The classic resort of Hunstanton provides a cherished mix 

of Victorian charm, coupled with plenty of opportunities for 

fun, play and excitement. Famed for its striped cliffs and 

excellent beach, awarded Blue Flag status in 2010, 

Hunstanton offers ideal conditions for playing on the sand, 

exploring rock pools and enjoying the sea. The town’s

excellent gardens, which won a silver gilt award in the 2010 

RHS Britain in Bloom, are ideal for an afternoon stroll. With a 

range of entertainment at the Princess Theatre, a fun fair, Sea 

Life Sanctuary, boat trips into the Wash to see the seals and 

wildlife, pony rides and all the other elements of an excellent 

family resort, Hunstanton is the perfect base to enjoy the 

coastline. 

If water sports are more your kind of thing, the West 

Norfolk coast provides excellent conditions for sailing, kitesurfing,

A journey of 

discovery 

Brim full of history, West Norfolk 

is a treasure trove of houses, 

windmills, castles and heritage 

sites to discover. King’s Lynn is a 

real jewel of a town, steeped in 

maritime and trading history. 

The fascinating history of King’s Lynn dates back to the 12th 

century when it was one of England’s most important ports. 

This heritage is reflected in an amazing array of historic 

buildings and at two magnificent market places: Saturday 

Market Place where St Margaret’s Church is surrounded by 

splendid buildings and Tuesday Market Place, quite possibly 

one of England’s grandest squares. The town’s Hanseatic 

history and trading links with Europe can be explored on the 

self guided Hanse trail. A great place to start your visit is the 

iconic Custom House, home of the Tourist Information Centre 

and maritime display. Ask for a copy of Discover King’s Lynn. 

Not far from the renowned Sandringham House, is 

Houghton Hall, a splendid Palladian mansion with awardwinning 

gardens and parkland. The stunning village of Castle 

Acre is truly rich in history with the impressive priory, castle, 

earthworks and Bailey Gate making this a great place to visit. 

At Castle Rising, just north of King’s Lynn the impressive 

12th century castle is truly worth visiting, whilst to the south 

the ancient Saxon town of Downham Market is the ideal base 

from which to discover the fascinating heritage of the Fens.

Tune in to the pace of the 

countryside 

With such a marvellous mix of 

beautiful coastline, rolling 

farmland, forest and fen, why not 

set out on foot or bike to 

discover the rich quality and 

natural pace of the countryside 

and its wildlife. 

For many visitors, West Norfolk offers a great opportunity to 

leave everyday life behind and spend a few days exploring by 

foot or by bike along local or national trails. From Hunstanton, 

you can set out along the beautiful Norfolk Coast Path. At 

nearby Holme-next-the-Sea you can also head inland through 

the heart of the idyllic West Norfolk countryside on the 

historic Peddars Way. From King’s Lynn you can follow the Nar 

Valley Way to Castle Acre or follow a waterways trail to 

Downham Market and beyond along The Fen Rivers Way. 

However long your visit, walking in West Norfolk is an 

absolute pleasure, be it a summer stroll along the beach, a 

ramble around the nature reserves, a woodland wander in 

autumn or a brisk walk along frosty paths in winter.

For cyclists, National Cycle Network Route 1 offers a 

fascinating journey through West Norfolk, from the mystical 

Fens in the west, through King’s Lynn and northwards to the 

coast. Just south of King’s Lynn route 1 connects with 

national route 11, giving a fine link through to Cambridge. 

Elsewhere several suggested routes provide a shorter ride. 

Renowned throughout Britain, the special environment of 

West Norfolk provides some of the finest nature reserves in 

the country and outstanding opportunities for bird watching. 

From famous reserves along the coast, and the unique 

environment of the Wash, to the special habitats of the Fens 

and the neighbouring Brecks, there are great opportunities 

for all to enjoy and discover our natural habitats.

One of the great pleasures of 

West Norfolk is the chance to 

immerse yourself in an idyllic mix 

of old-world charm, natural 

landscapes and some splendid 

places to stay and to eat. 

Rippling towards the coast the wide rolling landscape is a 

wonderful mix of forest and farmland, with uninterrupted 

views broken only by the occasional church spire or windmill. 

Through this mellow landscape you can visit charming 

villages, where some fine pubs, quality restaurants and 

fascinating individual shops will tempt you to linger for a while. 

Stop off to buy some fine local produce or sample some of the 

excellent local seafood such as oysters, mussels, shrimp and 

crab fresh from the sea. 

Explore Old Hunstanton with its mix of hotels, pubs and 

craft centre. Stroll down to the beach past colourful beach 

huts nestling amongst the dunes. From here you can walk 

past the famous striped cliffs all the way to elegant 

Hunstanton with its seafront, beautiful gardens and shops. 

Look out for the majestic sunsets, a really special feature of 

this west-facing east coast resort! 

Visit art galleries and studios to sample the work of local 

artists and take home a truly original souvenir. Why not visit 

the regular craft and collectables market at Downham 

Market.

In King’s Lynn, the Corn Exchange 

situated in Tuesday Market Place offers 

a sparkling programme of live 

entertainment, including opera, ballet, 

concerts, comedy, pantomime and 

children’s shows. 

At the King’s Lynn Arts Centre the 

15th century Guildhall of St George, 

provides a venue for theatre, music, 

dance, drama and films presented by 

local groups and organisations. The 

complex also features four galleries 

hosting visual art displays and workshops.

Also in King’s Lynn, the Majestic 

Cinema, a classic Victorian-style cinema

At Hunstanton, the Princess Theatre

King’s Lynn Festival 17-30 July 

King’s Lynn is justly proud of being recognised as a 

‘Festival Town’. Taking place in the heart of this 

historic town, an impressive range of festivals feature 

a fine selection of music, performance and literary 

events throughout the year. 

The 61st King’s Lynn Festival will maintain the tradition of featuring 

internationally famous orchestras, singers, musicians, and favourites from the 

worlds of classical music, jazz, folk and literature in a wide-ranging programme. 

Big names who have delighted audiences in recent years include Dame Kiri Te 

Kanawa and Lesley Garrett, flautist James Galway, historians David Starkey and 

Michael Wood, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and numerous national 

and international orchestras. Throughout the year King's Lynn Festival also 

presents a series of lectures in association with the Royal Geographical Society 

(with IBG) and a ‘Three Seasons’ series of concerts and recitals featuring 

chamber orchestras, distinguished soloists and rising stars from the classical 

music world.

Festival Too 25 June, 1, 2, 8 & 9 July 

Festival Too traditionally begins with a spectacular firework display, which 

heralds three weekends of exciting entertainment featuring pop and rock stars, 

top-rate tribute bands and the best of local talent. Now in its 26th year, huge 

crowds have packed the Tuesday Market Place in recent times to welcome The 

Human League, Suzi Quatro, Atomic Kitten, Toyah Wilcox, the Stranglers and 

Lemar. In addition, a variety of daytime street entertainment in the town centre 

provides fun for all the family. Still one of Europe’s largest FREE festivals, Festival 

Too is organised with sponsorship and support from local organisations.

King’s Lynn Fiction and Poetry Festivals 11-13 March & 23-25 September 

Continuing the festival theme, the annual King’s Lynn Fiction Festival takes place 

11–13 March 2011 and the yearly King’s Lynn Poetry Festival is 23-25 

September 2011, ensuring that King’s Lynn has something to offer festival goers 

all year. At each of these festivals, up to a dozen writers of national and 

international reputation read, discuss works and mingle with the audience.

Lifestyles Festival, Hunstanton 15-17 July 

Check out all things extreme at the 2011 Lifestyles festival in Hunstanton, 

featuring the BKSA National Freestyle Kite Surfing Championships and the 

UKWSA National Slalom and Freestyle Windsurfing Championships. ‘Come 

and have a go’ at a kite surfing, skateboarding, inline skating, climbing, BMX

Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts is an annual celebration of the arts

The 7th North Norfolk Music Festival features an array of chamber music 

concerts held in beautiful churches at South Creake and Burnham Norton.

Juntunen and Ronan Collett. Musicians include pianists Simon Lepper, 

Melvyn Tan and Tom Poster, the Sacconi String Quartet, the Finzi String

Town Hall takes visitors back to Lynn’s 1930s

Coasthopper 

The Coasthopper bus service is a really 

great way to explore the Norfolk coast. 

You can use it to travel between King’s 

Lynn, Hunstanton, Wells, Sheringham 

and Cromer. The service operates daily 

up to every hour during early spring, 

late autumn and winter and up to 

every half hour from April to October. 

The combination of the Norfolk Coast 

Path and the Coasthopper bus, offers 

excellent opportunities to leave the car 

behind and discover this beautiful part 

of our coastline. 

EXPLORE BY BIKE 

There are a host of cycle routes in West 

Norfolk including the Sustrans National 

Cycle Route 1 (Hull to Harwich) and 

National Route 11 which connects 

King’s Lynn with Cambridge and will 

connect through to Harlow, when fully
