WEST ARICHAT- Alocal woman’s gesture torecognize her community’sfallen soldiers has earnedpraise from neighbourswho were unaware of thearea’s contribution to themajor international conflictsof the past century.Lucille Mury, whosefather Patrick J. Mury wasstationed in Fredericton asa Canadian Corps ofEngineers member duringthe Second World War,placed small Canadianflags with poppies attachedto the red maple leaves onthe gravestones of alldeceased West Arichat soldierslast year.It was the second consecutiveyear that Mury hastaken this step to honourher community’s victims ofwar.“I had seen some seniorcitizens on the news thatwere going to put flags [onheadstones],” Muryrecalled.“That’s something weshould do, and I said, ‘I’mgoing to do it.’”Unsure of the exact locationsand number of headstonesmarking the fallenservicemen of West Arichat,Mury put together 66 flagpoppycombinations toensure her supplies wouldnot run out. Her effortsquickly attracted the attentionof Royal CanadianLegion members and otherswith family membersthat had served in otherparts of the world.“We actually found out[in 2008], afterRemembrance Day,”recalled David Forgeron, aretired educator whosefather Clarence was one ofseveral family membersthat served in the MerchantNavy.“Somebody said, ‘It waskind of nice to see all thoseCanadian flags with thepoppies on the headstonesof veterans of the ArmedForces and MerchantSeamen in the cemetery inWest Arichat.’ And I wasn’teven aware of it.”The Reporter Remembrance, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - Page 7Gone but not forgotten: A resident remembersby Adam CookeThe ReporterContributed photosPictured are two of thegrave sites of soldiersand servicemen buried atthe Immaculate Conceptiongraveyard in WestArichat which were decoratedwith Canadian flags, crosses and poppies forRemembrance Day.Landry Brothers Ltd.Nov. 6, 2010 ..... Remembrance dinner ..... 6 p.m.Plumbing, Heating, Ventilation & Electrical• Oil Fired Water Heaters• Newmac Wet Based Boilers• Plumbing & Sheet Metal• Newmac Furnaces• Hotwater Systems• Mobile Home Furnaces• Kerr Gemini Furnaces• Installation of Chimney Liners• New York Boilers• Specializing in Oil Tank Replacement• Certified Burner Technician WETT Certified Install on StaffFREE ESTIMATESLouisdale, 138 Hwy. #320Phone: 345-2720 Toll Free: 1-800-662-1127SCHEDULE OFofEVENTSNov. 11, 2010..... 9:30 a.m. ....Mass of Remembrance,Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'ArdoiseNov. 11, 2010 .... 10:30 a.m. .... If youhad asked me, two yearsago, how many people Ifigured would have servedin the Armed Forces fromour community, I neverwould have said ‘in the sixties.’”Mury, whose brotherBenny serves as the sergeant-at-armsfor RoyalCanadian Legion Branch150, is passionate aboutpreserving the legacy ofWest Arichat soldiers.“Even when it’s notRemembrance Day, I stillthink of them, because Iremember going to seesome of the seniors thatwere veterans at St. AnneCentre,” she explained.“And you get attachedto them, so when they passaway, it really hurts, because they tell you storiesand everything.”With this in mind, Muryis planning to maintain hertradition of placing poppycenteredflags on headstonesevery RemembranceDay.“I’ve started something, and as long as God cankeep me on earth, I will doit every year,” shedeclared.“When I won’t be able todo it, I hope somebody willtake over it and keep it up.We should have done it along time ago.”Remembrance DayIn Remembrance of all Veteranswho served our countryand protected our freedom. On November 11,we reflect with deep respectand lasting gratitude.Warden, Councillors & StaffMunicipality of theCounty of RichmondNov. 11, 2010 ... 12 NOON ... tea, coffee & a lightrefreshment at the BranchAs Canadians, we pause for a silent moment ofremembrance, for the many who served theircountry during wartime and in peace.
