Opening LetterMay/June 2008An Enduring Work of TruthDan GallagherJust as every child learns to crawl beforewalking, so too every Christian should learn towalk by the spirit.Every time I receive The Sower I am truly amazed at thequality and the content. In some ways that seems odd forme to write because every week I participate with the entirestaff as we painstakingly dream, plan, and strategize over everyissue. The reason it is so exciting for me is because, like you, Itoo have no idea what the final product will actually look likeuntil after it is mailed out. I have great confidence based on thesuperb performance of our staff in the past that this issue will bebeneficial in your spiritual walk. This year we are focusing on subjects that are fundamentallyimportant to every Christian. This is why this issue is devoted toWalking by the Spirit, because it remains one of the most confusingand least understood topics in Christianity. So often I hear peopleusing phrases that seem to suggest the holy spirit is an entity thatcomes and goes in meetings, and often implying the success of anevent can be demonstrated if “the spirit’ was present. Then thereare times when some speak about an “anointing,” as if to implythat sometimes we are anointed and sometimes, we are not.Just as every child learns to crawl beforewalking, so too every Christian should learn towalk by the spirit. I do not believe it is essentialthat a person understand the gift of holy spiritand its nine manifestations in order to walk inspiritual power, but it definitely will help eliminatedoubts, confusion, and wrong teaching when weunderstand it accurately. How unfortunate it hasbeen for some to think that they cannot hear fromGod, or that there are nine gifts and that they justdo not have them. The truth concerning Walkingby the Spirit goes a long way to increasing aperson’s confidence, faith, and effectiveness inthe spiritual battle. Is there any doubt why somuch confusion and wrong teaching exists in thisarea? We have set the spiritual goal of building “anenduring work of truth” and it will take men andwomen who are spiritually maturing, walking inthe fullness of the spirit in order to accomplish it.It is our prayer that this issue of The Sower helpsyou on your journey towards spiritual fulfillmentand maturity in Christ.Understanding that every person receives the gift of holy spiritat the time of the New Birth provides the greatest benefit when weunderstand what to do with it. Knowing I have spiritual power isgreat, but accurately understanding how to use it is best. It is theholy spirit which enables me to be like Christ and do the works hesaid I could do.Blessings,Dan2 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

ATTENTIONFull Time Ministers of the Gospel!by John A. LynnP.S. That means YOU!!God’s Secret PlanIt took about 35 years for the Lord to progressively revealto Paul what we now read in his epistles to the Church, thefullness of the truth about this unique administration of the“Sacred Secret.” We now know that what actually happenedon Pentecost was that God’s secret plan for Jesus Christ todiversify himself came into fruition. When Jesus walked theearth, carrying out his mission as the Messiah to Israel andSavior of mankind, he could be in only one place at a time.Peter later spoke about:Acts 10:38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the HolySpirit and power, and how he went around doinggood and healing all who were under the power ofthe devil, because God was with him. This May/June issue of The Sower is focused upon themonumental event recorded in Acts 2 when, on theJewish holiday of Pentecost, the Christian Church, theBody of Christ on earth, was born. 1 None of the “about 120”who first received the gift of holy spirit that morning, or the“about 3000” who believed Peter’s subsequent messageand were born again shortly thereafter, understood theearth-shaking significance of that day. None realized thatthey were the first members of a theretofore undreamed ofgroup of people unlike any who had ever lived.Wherever Jesus went, he exercised the power of Godto prevail over Satan and destroy his works, but he coulddirectly do nothing about what was going on anywhere else. The Sacred Secret that was hidden in God, which, had Satanknown, he would not have crucified Jesus, was that Jesuswould diversify himself into a worldwide body of people. Each would be anointed and equipped with holy spirit, as hewas, and could therefore do the works he did. Satan wouldmuch rather be facing one Jesus than millions of Christianscapable of being like him and doing what he did.The Day of Pentecost ushered in sweeping changes asto how God related to His people, and one of the biggestMinisterMinisterMinisterMinister Minister Minister4 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

changes was in regard to the gift of holyspirit. 2 Before Pentecost, God chose whowould receive it, gave it conditionallyand temporarily, and to only a fewbelievers. As of Pentecost, everyonewho chooses to confess Jesus as Lordand believe that God raised him fromthe dead (Rom. 10:9) receives the giftof holy spirit, the absolute guarantee ofsalvation. 3 Each is thus equipped to “represent”the Lord Jesus, the Head of theBody of which each of us is a vital part. Assuch, every Christian is a full time ministerof the Good News of Jesus Christ.Ephesians 4:7, 11 and 12(7) But to each one of us gracehas been given as Christapportioned it.(11) It was he who gavesome to be apostles, someto be prophets, some to beevangelists, and some to bepastors and teachers,(12) to prepare God’s peoplefor works of service, so that thebody of Christ may be built up.Yes, there are what we might call“leadership ministries” — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, andteachers, but they are not to be the onlyones doing the work of the ministry(serving). Each member of the Body is todo his part, and each one can because, via the gift of holy spirit, each is directlyconnected to the Head. As per thefollowing verse, you can utilize all ninemanifestations (abilities) of that gift towalk in this dark world and be a shininglight for the Lord.1 Corinthians 12:7Now to each one themanifestation of the Spirit isgiven for the common good.In the Old Testament, God instituteda priestly hierarchy among His people,Israel, and the leaders were easilyrecognizable by their special clothingand their titles. In the Body of Christ, however, there is no such “peckingorder.” Each Christian has direct accessto the throne of grace, as well as theright (and responsibility) to speak theWord to any other member of the Body. There is authority in the Church, but itis earned by loving service, is voluntarilyacknowledged, and is always relativeto the overall authority and lordship ofJesus Christ. The Christian Church is a body ofbelievers, and Scripture equates itsfunctioning with how the human bodyfunctions:Romans 12:4-8(4) Just as each of us has onebody with many members, andthese members do not all havethe same function,(5) so in Christ we who aremany form one body, and eachmember belongs to all theothers.(6) We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.If a man’s gift is prophesying, lethim use it in proportion to hisfaith.(7) If it is serving, let him serve; ifit is teaching, let him teach;(8) if it is encouraging, let himencourage; if it is contributing tothe needs of others, let him givegenerously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if itis showing mercy, let him do itcheerfully. What’s your gift?So what is your gift, your longsuit, your part? If you are not sure, the wayto find out is to press into your personalrelationship with the Lord Jesus, getinvolved in a part of his Body (a group ofChristians) and take advantage of everyopportunity to pray, teach, sing, write, give, cook, counsel, share your heart,or help someone in any godly way. Seewhat comes naturally to you, what youlike to do, what you are good at. Knowthat your Father and your Lord valueyou and have a personal curriculum ofThey made choices to do what they could forthe Lord. So can you. Each Christian has direct access to the throne ofgrace, as well as the right (and responsibility) tospeak the Word to any other member of the Body.learning and growth for you. They areeager to energize you and help youpresent their heart to the world.1 Peter 4:10 and 11(10) Each one should usewhatever gift he has receivedto serve others, faithfullyadministering God’s grace in itsvarious forms.(11) If anyone speaks, he shoulddo it as one speaking thevery words of God. If anyoneserves, he should do it with thestrength God provides, so thatin all things God may be praisedthrough Jesus Christ. To him bethe glory and the power for everand ever. Amen.Romans 16 is a unique chapter in theChurch Epistles, and if you’ve not read itlately, take a look at it and consider thefact that 35 of your fellow Christians arementioned by name, along with quite afew others less specifically. Take time tothink about what is said about variousones, for no doubt some of thosedescriptions could be said about you.Ponder the fact that each one of themwas unique, like you, a man or womanplagued by a sin nature yet filled withthe divine nature of Christ. They madechoices to do what they could for theLord. So can you. 4Whether or not you are ever paid asan employee of a ministry, you are a fulltime minister of the Good News of yourLord Jesus Christ, so go forth each dayand serve the Bread of Life to those inyour world.Notes:1. The Spirit & Truth Fellowship CommunityAn Enduring Work ofBy Dan GallagherIcan still hear the voice of PeterAlcantara when he loudly said,“Synergy.” All eyes were rivetedupon him as he spoke with passion, energy, and conviction. The event wasa weeklong meeting that Ryan Maher,Mike Patten, and I were attending inFebruary in the Philippines. ThereThis day we were all faced with anew challenge. The issue no longerwas one of right doctrine, as it wasclear to all that they were solid in thefundamentals of the faith. No, nowwe needed to discern the Lord’s visionfor their country and the part theywere to play in spreading the truth.I believe that truly spiritual goals, when inspiredby God or the Lord Jesus, require spiritual meansto be accomplished.was a synergy present that we were allfeeling as we came together to discussthe vision and strategies of Spirit &Truth Fellowship of Asia (STFA). Petercould not have said it better. My only previous trip to thePhilippines was in May of 2002. At thattime the nine elders (Peter Alcantara,James Bat-ao, James and Nene Butoy,Benjie Casido, Rey Delima, LeonidasDuazo, Willie Matub, and RudyOdarve) were all ordained as ministersand installed as the Board of Elders ofthe STFA. Since John Lynn’s first visitto their country in 1991, these menand women had stood for truth againsta tsunami of pressure and persecutions.Yet here they were, continuing steadfastin their convictions for the doctrinaltruth and the subsequent freedom itbrings. We discussed the past, the state of theministry in the Philippines, and ourdirection. I rhetorically asked, “Whatare we trying to accomplish?” It wasthen that I recalled a phrase I kepthearing in my mind the night before:“an enduring work of truth.”We all stopped to consider it as Iwrote it at the top of the whiteboardat the front of the room. Throughoutthe next few days we kept coming backto that phrase, examining it from manyangles and perspectives. We agreed thatthe truth (doctrine) was not the issue, but rather what would it take for usto produce “an enduring work”? Toooften missionaries have evangelizedother countries only to have thingsfail because they have never made thework indigenous, and instead tried tocontrol things from their home country6 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

Peter Alcantara first came to one of our seminars in the Philippinesin the early 1990s. The Word of God touched his heart, he immersedhimself in it, and stood as a faithful warrior for the Lord until theday he fell asleep (Feb. 25, 2008).With his cheerful disposition and his unwavering trust in God, hewas a bright light for the Lord, and he is sorely missed by his wife,Ely, and his children Peterly Anthropos, Mae Diadem A. Abrea,Richer, Kristianne, and all the brethren. The Lord Jesus misses Petertoo, and is looking forward to seeing him again at his appearing.through governance or finances. We all recognizedthe need to promote liberty and independence. Forthe rest of the week we explored many conceptssuch as team ministry, godly communication, conflict resolution, authority in the Body ofChrist, spiritual gifts and calling, outreach, andgovernance.I believe that truly spiritual goals, wheninspired by God or the Lord Jesus, require spiritualmeans to be accomplished. The only way we willbe able to achieve our vision of an enduring workof truth in the Philippines, and the world, is byhelping men and women maximize their fullspiritual potential in Christ. This work will takesacrifice, and it will take walking by the spirit!Praise God, Peter was correct, there was asynergy in the room, and we all could feel theenergy that comes from being united in the samevision. I am grieved to report that four days afterthe conclusion of our meeting Peter died, finallysuccumbing to the ravaging effects of liver cancer. My friend will be greatly missed, but he would bethe first to insist that we continue to be steadfast inour vision of “an enduring work of truth.”DID YOU KNOW?We have an entire topic on our TruthOrTradition.comwebsite dedicated to the topic of “Truth Matters”?Visit TruthOrTradition.com/truthFor more on community visit,TruthOrTradition.com/communityMay/June 2008 | STFonline.org/sower 7

THE CONTENDER“...I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints” (Jude 3)Read all 9 online atTruthOrTradition.com/99 ofManifestionsHOLY SPIRITBy John W. SchoenheitWhat is a “manifestation” of holy spirit?1Corinthians 12:7 (Author’s Translation)says, “Now to each one [each Christian]is given the manifestation of the spiritfor the common good.” A “manifestation”is something made visible, apparent, orevident in the senses world. Therefore, amanifestation of the spirit is something thatis brought into the senses world via the giftof holy spirit. The only way to have a “manifestation” ofholy spirit is to have holy spirit itself, and onereceives God’s gift of holy spirit the momenthe is born again. This means that today, inthe Grace Administration, the manifestationsof holy spirit are available only to Christians, not to unsaved people, who do not haveGod’s gift of holy spirit. We must understandthis because sometimes manifestations suchas a message of knowledge or a messageof wisdom are treated as if they simplyreferred to great knowledge or vast wisdom.Knowledge and wisdom learned via one’s fivesenses are not manifestations of holy spirit. Many unbelievers have much knowledgeor wisdom, but that is not a “manifestation”of holy spirit because they do not have holyspirit. Many Christians erroneously refer to themanifestations of holy spirit as “gifts of thespirit.” A “manifestation” is when somethingappears in the senses world or is readilyperceived by the senses, while a “gift” issomething that is given from one personto another. A good way to understand thedifference between a gift and a manifestationis to think of a light bulb. If someone givesyou a light bulb, it is the gift, and whenit is turned on, the light and heat are itsmanifestations. If you have the light bulb, you automatically have its manifestations oflight and heat when you turn it on.Likewise, God gives us his gift of holyspirit. The manifestations come from thegift; they are not gifts in and of themselves. So, for example, the reason God can say,“I would like every one of you to speak intongues…” (1 Cor. 14:5a) is that speaking intongues is a manifestation, not a gift. EveryChristian has the gift of holy spirit born andsealed inside him, so each has the ability tospeak in tongues, as well as evidence theother manifestations.May/June 2008 | STFonline.org/sower 9

For further study on “faith” visit TruthOrTradition.com/faithWhat is the manifestation of Faith? When God asks us to have faith, He is not asking us to believesomething without proof. The manifestation of faith is yourhaving the confidence or trust that whatGod or the Lord Jesus Christ has revealedto you by a message of knowledge or amessage of wisdom will come to pass atyour command. Before we can understand the“manifestation of faith” (1 Cor.12:9), we must understandwhat “regular” faith is. “Faith” is thetranslation of the Greek noun pistis, which means “trust,” “confidence,”or “assurance.” 1 Our English word“trust” captures the sense very well.Sadly, most Christians do not knowwhat “faith” is because the moderndefinition differs from the biblicaldefinition. The modern definition of“faith,” and the definition most Christianshave in their mind, is a “firm belief insomething for which there is no proof ”(Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary). It is vital to understand that “belief insomething for which there is no proof ” isactually superstition, and that is far fromthe biblical definition of “faith.”The Biblical Definition of FaithThe biblical definition of faith is“trust,” and we trust things only afterthey have been proven to us. God doesnot ask us to believe Him without somekind of reason or proof. He has leftmany evidences that He exists and thatHis Word is true. 2 When God asks us tohave faith, He is not asking us to believesomething without proof. All of us have “faith” (trust) in a largenumber of things. In fact, life wouldbe impossible without trust. A personwould not even sit down if he did nottrust the chair would hold him. Godasks us to trust that Jesus has beenraised from the dead because the Bible, history, and evidences such as speakingin tongues, give plenty of evidence for it.The reason it is impossible to please Godwithout faith (Heb. 11:6), is that after allGod does for us day after day, and hasdone for mankind throughout history,if we still do not trust Him—well youcan see that He would be displeased.Frankly, if any of us did many wonderfulthings for someone else, and that person“returned the favor” by being distrustfulof us, we would be displeased too. Oncewe understand that “faith” is “trust,”we are in a position to understandthe “manifestation of faith,” which wemight also call, “the manifestation oftrust.” In contrast to ordinary faith, themanifestation of holy spirit referred toas “faith” is the trust that is necessary toaccomplish the special tasks that God,by revelation, asks us to do. Contrasting“faith” with the “manifestation of faith”should help to clarify what that means. If I own a chair I have sat in many times,I have built up trust that it will hold me. Ihave faith in the chair. But what about doing a healing ormiracle? I know I cannot do it in my flesh. Therefore, the only way I can heal or doa miracle is to trust in the revelation thatI have received from God (via a messageof knowledge, wisdom, or discerningof spirits), and to trust that when Icommand the healing or miracle tocome to pass, it will. That “supernatural”trust, which is based on revelationand is brought to pass via the powermanifestations of healing, miracles, etc,is “the manifestation of faith.” A commonpattern involving the manifestation offaith is: God (or the Lord Jesus) givesa revelation, the person trusts therevelation (“the manifestation of faith”)and acts on it, and then God supplies thepower to bring the revelation to pass.Biblical ExamplesMoses brought water out ofa rock by the manifestation offaith (Exod. 17:5 and 6). He couldnot do so by his own power, butGod told him that if he struckthe rock, water would come out.Moses trusted what God said (themanifestation of faith), acted onit, and by the manifestation ofmiracles brought water out of therock. Gideon defeated the Midianites bythe manifestation of faith (Judg. 6:16),Elijah multiplied the oil and flour by themanifestation of faith (1 Kings 17:14-16),and the other great miracles of the Biblewere done by the manifestation of faith. When it comes to miracles and giftsof healings, we need the manifestationof faith because we cannot heal the sickor do miracles by our human power. Godmust give us a message of knowledgeand a message of wisdom, letting usknow that it is His will for us to healsomeone or do a miracle, and then wemust have the faith to do it. As Christians,we should live our lives in such a way thatour faith in God grows and continuesto grow, so that we are well able tomanifest His power and bless and deliverpeople.Notes:1. For further study on “speaking in tongues” visit TruthOrTradition.com/tonguesSome Christians do not speak in tongues eventhough they know it is God’s will and want to doso, because they expect God to speak throughthem, i.e., take over their mouths and makethem speak. He will not do it.Christians speak in tongues and othersdo not. It does not automatically happenwhen one becomes a Christian, which iswhy so many wonderful Christians donot speak in tongues—many have neverbeen instructed as to what the Word saysabout it, and many have never tried. Thefact that speaking in tongues is underour control also explains why there areverses in 1 Corinthians 14 about to howto do it correctly. Tongues can be misusedand operated incorrectly. A Christianspeaking in tongues can start and stopwhen he wants to. He can speak loudly, softly or completely quietly, he can singor shout in tongues. No FearThere are Christians who do notspeak in tongues due to a fear about it,but we should never allow fear to keep usfrom doing the will of God. All of us havesome fear, but obedient Christians meettheir fear head on and break throughinto victory. Some people are afraid ofgetting a counterfeit, not real “tongues,”but when a person asks God for holyspirit power, he gets the genuine article(Luke 11:9-13). Others are afraid to tryto speak in tongues because they thinkthey are not good enough to do so, butno verse even hints that someone has tobe “good” to speak in tongues.Remember, speaking in tonguesis prayer in the spirit. No one says tohimself, “I am not good enough to pray.”Even the worst criminals call out to Godin prayer, and they should. Similarly,God would never keep someone frompraying in the spirit because he was “notgood enough.” If a person is a Christian,he has the gift of holy spirit and canmanifest it via speaking in tongues.Speaking in tongues is a way oftrusting God and making Jesus Lord ina very tangible sense. Think about it:God asks us to speak a language we donot know. That means we must moveour mouth and begin to speak, even ifwe have nothing to say. That takes trust! That takes making Christ Lord! When wetrust God and start to speak, we find thatGod is trustworthy, because as we beginto speak, words form on our lips. Syllableby syllable, word after word, we beginto speak in tongues. We are praisingGod in the spirit, praying in the spirit, speaking of God’s wonderful works andmagnifying Him.Some Christians do not speak intongues even though they know it isGod’s will and want to do so, becausethey expect God to speak throughthem, i.e., take over their mouths andmake them speak. He will not do it. TheBible says that the Christian does thespeaking. Thus, a believer should neverwait for God to move his mouth andspeak through him. Instead, he shoulduse the mechanics of speech with faiththat the Lord will give him the words tosay as he is speaking. How much should we speak intongues? As much as possible. After all,it is prayer in the spirit, and the Bibletells us to “pray continually” (1 Thess.5:17). The Apostle Paul prayed much intongues. He wrote: “I thank God that Ispeak in tongues more than all of you”(1 Cor. 14:18). We should follow theexample of Paul and speak in tonguesmuch in our daily lives.Scripture is ClearScripture is clear that God wants usto speak in tongues. There is nothing tofear, and every reason to want to obeyGod and receive the blessings andbenefits of this unique manifestation ofthe spirit. The Lord is with you. Go for it!And know that as you are speaking intongues, you are praising your wonderfulheavenly Father and touching His heartwith your love for Him.Note:1. What is Interpretation of Tongues?Interpretation of tongues comes from the Lord, not from one’s mind.Interpretation of tongues is giving thesum and substance, in your own language,of what you have just spoken in tongues. One of the most importantthings to understand aboutthe interpretation of tonguesis that the interpretation comes fromthe Lord, not from one’s mind. No oneunderstands what he is saying in atongue, so no one can “translate” what hejust spoke in tongues. The manifestationof interpretation of tongues works justlike the manifestation of speaking intongues or prophecy in that the wordscome, often word by word as they arebeing spoken, from the Lord Jesus Christto the individual via the gift of holy spiritwithin him.You speak, you translateWhen a person speaks in tonguesout loud in a believer’s meeting, heshould interpret so that the people willunderstand him and be edified.1 Corinthians 14:5I would like every one of you tospeak in tongues, but I wouldrather have you prophesy. Hewho prophesies is greater thanone who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so thatthe church may be edified. The interpretation of tongues isto be done by the one who spoke intongues, just as 1 Corinthians 14:5 and13 say. Verse 13 is just as clear, and says,“…anyone who speaks in a tongueshould pray that he may interpret whathe says.” There is some confusion inChristianity about this, which is in partcaused by verse 27, which is unclearbecause it uses the more generic “one”or “someone.” However, as in all theWord of God, unclear verses must beunderstood and interpreted in light ofthe clear verses. In this case, verses 5 and13 are crystal clear: the one speaking intongues must be the one to interpret.Nevertheless, in some churches oneperson speaks in tongues and anothersupposedly gives the interpretation. If that were the way tongues andinterpretation were properly operated, then it would take revelation (a messageof knowledge), or at least collaboration, before anyone could speak in tonguesin the church. After all, God directs usto not speak in tongues in the churchunless there is an interpretation (1 Cor.14:6-13, 27 and 28), and the only waythat one who spoke in tongues couldbe absolutely sure that someone elsewould interpret would be to know itby revelation from the lord, or speakto the person about it beforehand.Done properly, the person who speaksin a tongue in the church will thenimmediately give the interpretation. Thatgives great flexibility and spontaneityto any church service, because anyonemoved to bring forth an edifyingmessage via tongues and interpretationcan do so.To God, not menSpeaking in tongues is specificallysaid to be to God, not to men (1 Cor.14:2). It is praise and prayer to God, sothe interpretation will also be praiseand prayer to God. This is the bigdifference between prophecy and theinterpretation of tongues. Prophecy isa message to the people (1 Cor. 14:3),while interpretation of tongues is to God(or the Lord Jesus Christ), but is heard bythe congregation, who are edified by it.In that sense, an interpretation might becompared to many of the Psalms, which, though addressed to God, are a greatblessing to listen to when they are readout loud. Both the interpretation of tonguesand prophecy edify the Church. To teach that interpretationhas to sound just like prophecy (i.e., “tothe people”) because they both edifythe people misses the point of the word“edified,” and the rest of what Acts andthe Epistles teach us about speaking intongues.Just as there were many differentways to build (“edify”) a building, but itwas all “building,” there are many waysto “build” the Church. One of thoseways is prophecy, when people hearwords from God spoken to them, andanother way is when they hear positiveand uplifting words about God spokenas an interpretation. There are manyother ways the Church is “built up,” too, such as hearing wonderful prayer andsinging in the congregation. The manifestation of interpretationof tongues exalts, honors, magnifies, and praises God, who is certainlydeserving of our praise andthanksgiving. Thus, we should havethe manifestation of interpretation oftongues when we get together in ourChristian meetings (1 Cor. 14:27). What is a Message of Knowledge?God or the Lord Jesus giving knowledge to us via the gift ofholy spirit.A message of knowledge is Godor the Lord Jesus Christ providingto you information, insight, andunderstanding about something.Amessage of knowledge is amanifestation of the gift ofholy spirit (1 Cor. 12:7 and8), so it is God or the Lord Jesusgiving knowledge to us via the giftof holy spirit. We refer to “a messageof knowledge” as a “revelationmanifestation,” because God orthe Lord Jesus Christ reveals theknowledge, or information, to us.The manifestation is a “message” ofknowledge. The Greek word logos, often translated “word,” does not referto a “ vocabulary word,” but rather toa “word” in the sense of a concept oridea. Thus, the entire Bible is referredto as “the Word,” i.e., the messagefrom God. The translation “message”accurately communicates what the Lordgives by revelation: a message.Revelation & its many formsAlthough most people wouldunderstand the phrase, “a word ofknowledge,” it could be misleading ifone thought it meant revelation came in“words.” In our experience, the majorityof the revelation most Christians receiveis not by “words,” but much more often byan impression or picture. The message ofknowledge that God gives us may comein many different ways. It may seem soclear that you think it is in the sensesworld, but it is God communicatingthrough holy spirit to your mind. Forexample, you may “hear” a voice that isso clear you think others heard it too,but it is coming to your mind via holyspirit. Or you may see a picture or visionso real you think others can see it, but itis in your mind via holy spirit. Revelationcan come to us via holy spirit as a voice, a“A message ofknowledge” issimply knowledge, information, notwhat to do with theinformation, whichis “a message ofwisdom.”picture or vision, a physical sensation, asmell, a taste, a firm realization, an innerknowing, or a strong emotion.A trip to a theological librarywill quickly reveal that there is muchspeculation and ignorance amongChristians as to what “a message ofknowledge” is. The Living Bible, 1for example, calls “a message ofwisdom,” “…the ability to give wiseadvice….” But many people, savedand unsaved, give wise advice, sothat is not a manifestation of holyspirit. Sometimes people point outthat God “speaks” via other people’sadvice, or nature, etc., and God can“speak” to us that way, but that kindof communication from God is nota manifestation of holy spirit. Amessage of knowledge is the Lordgiving information to the believer, not the believer giving it to others.“A message of knowledge”is not explained in 1 Corinthiansbecause they did not need anexplanation. They knew aboutthem from the Old Testament, the example of the apostles, prophets, and others who walkedin great power, and from their ownpersonal experience (“everyone has…arevelation, a tongue, an interpretation...”1 Cor. 14:26). However, in the centuriesafter Christ many false doctrines enteredChristianity, fulfilling Paul’s prophecythat people would not put up withsound doctrine but be turned to myths(2 Tim. 4:3-5), and Peter’s prophecy thatfalse teachers would bring destructiveheresies into the Church (2 Pet. 2:1).In the case of God’s gift of holy spiritand the power a believer could manifest, the gift of holy spirit was turned into“the Holy Spirit,” the “Third Person ofthe Trinity,” and the true meaning ofverses that referred to holy spirit waslost. When we recover the truth thatGod placed His gift of holy spirit “upon”people before the Day of Pentecost, that it is born in people after Pentecost, and that the invisible gift of holy spiritis the primary way God communicatesto His people, we can clearly see “amessage of knowledge” and the other16 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

Moses hadholy spirit on him, and God spoke tohim via that spirit. When he needed helpleading the Israelites, God’s solutionwas to put holy spirit on 70 men whocould then help with the work (Num.11:16-29) because they too could thenhear directly from God. Many of Israel’sleaders are specifically said to have hadholy spirit on them: Joshua (Num. 27:18);Othniel (Judg. 3:10); Gideon (Judg. 6:34);David (1 Sam. 16:13); Elijah and Elisha(2 Kings 2:15), and many more.“A message of knowledge” is simplyknowledge, information, not what todo with the information, which is “amessage of wisdom.” Many times Godgives both a message of knowledgeand a message of wisdom, althoughsometimes He gives only one. If He givesonly knowledge, it is because what to dois apparent. If He gives only wisdom, the“why” was not necessary. There are hundreds of examples of“a message of knowledge” in Scripture.God gave much information to Abraham,Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and others. In Genesis 17:6 God told AbrahamHe would make him very fruitful andthat nations and kings would be hisdescendants. This is pure information,a message of knowledge. There wasnothing for Abraham to do but know it.God told Joseph that the seven ears ofgrain and seven cows in Pharaoh’s dreamwere seven years (Gen. 41:25-32), andlater gave Joseph a message of wisdomso he would know how to prepare forthe upcoming famine. God told Mosesthat when he went to Pharaoh, he wouldnot listen even if there were many signsand wonders (Exod. 7:3 and 4). This wasinformation so that Moses would not gethis hopes up. God told Joshua that thereproach of Egypt had been removedfrom Israel (Josh. 5:9) so that Joshuawould know that nothing else wasneeded to get back into God’s favor. Godtold Samuel what was going to happento Eli the priest (1 Sam. 3:11-14). Therewas nothing for Samuel to do, he wasjust given the information so he wouldbe aware of what was coming. There is nothing more exciting thanhearing from God or the Lord Jesus, and they will speak to us and guide usthrough life. Although at times God givesa message of knowledge or wisdom insuch a clear and powerful way that itcannot be missed, usually revelationcomes as a “gentle whisper” or “a stillsmall voice” (1 Kings 19:12; NIV, KJV),meaning that it can easily be drownedout amidst the “noise” in our minds. Goddirects us to “Be still, and know that I amGod…” (Ps. 46:10a), so let us quiet thenoise in our minds, ask God to speakwith us, and then listen intently for Hisvoice.Note:1. In contrast toknowledge, “wisdom” is guidance ordirection about what to do in any givensituation. Webster’s 1828 Dictionarycaptures the essence of wisdom: “theright use or exercise of knowledge.” 1 Asa manifestation of the gift of holy spirit,a message of wisdom is God or the LordJesus Christ giving a Christian “wisdom,”direction as to what to do, via the gift ofholy spirit that is sealed inside him.Examples from the BibleThe Bible has many examplesof God giving people direction byrevelation. Most of the time, “a messageof wisdom” is given along with “amessage of knowledge.” God will tellyou something (knowledge), and thentell you what to do (wisdom). Or He willtell you what to do (wisdom), and thentell you why (knowledge). If God gives amessage of wisdom without a messageof knowledge, it is usually because the“why” is soon apparent. For example, someone driving toward an intersectionwhere he has the right of way gets arevelation to stop (a message of wisdom;what to do in the situation), and does.A car coming the other way ignoresthe stop sign and speeds through theintersection. In that case, God did nothave to give a message of knowledgeabout why to stop; that informationcame through the five senses. If God tells a person what to dothrough a prophet, another Christian,a sign of some sort, or a phenomenonsuch as an angel or a talking donkey(Num. 22:28), the message may berevelation, but it is not a “manifestationof holy spirit.” In order to be a“manifestation of the spirit,” themessage must come directly to theperson via the gift of holy spirit. TheBible is full of examples of God giving amessage of wisdom, for example: He toldNoah to build an ark, Abraham to leaveMesopotamia and go to a new land,Moses to build the Tent of Meeting, andJoshua how to cross the Jordan River. The most common thing we seein Scripture, however, is that God givesmessages that are a blend of knowledge(information) and wisdom (guidance, direction), just like we do when wespeak to one another. Note the examplesbelow:Exodus 7:14 and 15(14) Then the Lo r d said to Moses,“Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;he refuses to let the peoplego [Information: a message ofknowledge].(15) Go to Pharaoh in themorning as he goes out to thewater. For further study on “prophecy” visit TruthOrTradition.com/prophecyWhat is the Manifestation of Prophecy?Communicating a message from God to a person or persons.Prophecy is speaking, writing, orotherwise communicating a messagefrom God to a person or persons. The manifestation of prophecyoccurs when God or the Lord Jesusgives a Christian a message ofknowledge or a message of wisdom viathe holy spirit born inside him, which heis to relate to another person or persons, and he then gives that message. Therevelation message that is spoken forthas prophecy can come to the one givingit in several ways. It can come in themoment, almost word-by-word to, andthen from, the speaker, or the entiremessage can come from God to thespeaker before he speaks any of it, orthe prophecy can be a combination ofthose two ways, some being given byrevelation before it is spoken, and somecoming by revelation as the person isprophesying.Old Testament prophecyThe Old Testament shows thatprophecy is a manifestation of holyspirit because many believers who hadholy spirit are very often recorded asprophesying, or prophesying as the spiritcame upon them. Thus it is no wonderthat today, in the Administration of Gracewhen every Christian has the gift of holyspirit, there are records of “everybody” inthe church prophesying (1 Cor. 14:24).The manifestation of prophecy isto strengthen, encourage, and comfortpeople (1 Cor. 14:3). It can reveal thesecrets of people’s hearts, bringingthem closer to God (1 Cor. 14:24 and 25).Bringing God’s messages to His peopleis not only a tremendous privilege, it isessential for the wellbeing of the Church. Many Christians do not prophesy, butnot because they do not have thespiritual ability, for the presence of holyspirit inside a Christian gives him thatability. If a Christian does not prophesy, either he has not been sufficientlyinstructed on how to do so or he doesnot have the faith to act upon what heknows, or he does not want to prophesy, perhaps because he sees no value in it,or because he does not want to give aninaccurate prophecy.False propheciesThere have always been falseprophets and false prophecies. That wastrue of Israel in the Old Testament (Jer.14:14), when Jesus lived (Matt. 7:15),and in the Church today (1 John 4:1). Weshould not be afraid of false prophets orfalse prophecy, or stop prophesying justbecause they exist. After all, Jesus didnot say to his disciples, “Do not prophesy, because there are false prophets around.”Like Jesus, we should learn to recognizefalse prophecies and false prophets (“Bytheir fruit you will recognize them…”[Matt. 7:16]).Themanifestationof prophecy isto strengthen, encourage, andcomfort people. Not just about the futureProphecies are not just about thefuture. A biblical study of prophecyshows that it can be about the past, present, or future—whatever it takes tostrengthen and encourage the people.Furthermore, prophecy can be to a groupof people or to an individual. 1 Scriptureclearly shows how valuable prophecywas in the spiritual wholeness of God’speople. Christians need to hear fromGod, not just by revelation, but by themanifestation of prophecy. The strength, encouragement, and comfort thatcomes through prophecy is importantto the Church, which is why God saysChristians should be eager to prophesy(1 Cor. 14:39). 2Notes:1. One of thethings we’re most grateful for is having anunderstanding of His incredible Word, for itis only through this understanding that weare able to make sense of this crazy world. When discussing the Bible withpeople from traditional religious Christianbackgrounds, it’s amazing to us how theycould believe what they believe in the faceof biblical evidence that blatantly refutestheir beliefs. For example, 1 John 5:19 isa scripture that clearly declares that thewhole world is under the control of the evilone, but when discussing this scripture withothers, we often hear things like: “Well, Istill believe that God is in control.” Withsuch error so prevalent, we should nevertake for granted what a privilege it is tofellowship with people who believe thattruth does matter and that God’s Word IStruth. My wife, Donnell, and I have beenwith Spirit & Truth Fellowship from itsinception. We have enjoyed the tapes andpublications as a way of staying in touchand continuing to grow. It’s difficult forus to attend conferences regularly, butwe’re praying for an increase in futureopportunities. We’ve seen this ministrybeing led by men and women of integritywho make the tough decisions when needed, and at the same time, bare their hearts andsouls regardless of the pain. Open and honest communication must startwith those who go first, and our Lord Jesus is the greatest example ofthis. He spoke the truth even when others were offended by what he hadto say.Donnell and I have been partners with this ministry since the late1980s. We’ve been thoroughly blessed to watch it grow and continueto stand for truth, do biblical research, and teach others to do likewise.Through the years we’ve been associated with other ministries, butrepeatedly discovered that truth was being compromised in order touphold traditional religious beliefs. For this reason, we continue toput our finances where our hearts are, and we pray that those who aresearching for truth will become involved in this ministry and be filled bythe truth of God’s matchless Word.God bless you all,Gary and Donnell NicksHigh Rolls Mountain Park, NMPARTNERwith Spirit & Truth Fellowship InternationalTogether We Can!!To become a partner, go toSTFonline.org/partnershipor use the enclosed partnership formor call 1.888.255.6189 M-F 8:30-5 (EST)May/June 2008 | STFonline.org/sower 21

What is the Manifestation of Discerning of Spirits?God or the Lord Jesus Christ revealing to you informationabout the presence or non-presence of spirits.Every Christianwill encounterdemons, whetherhe recognizesthem or not. What a greatblessing andcomfort to knowthat God hasequipped eachof us to deal withany demon thatcomes against us.The manifestation of discerning ofspirits is God or the Lord Jesus Christrevealing to you information aboutthe presence or non-presence of spirits(including both holy spirit or demons),and sometimes including the identity ofdemons present, whether or not you maycast them out, and providing the power todo it.Discerning of spirits is a“manifestation” of the gift ofholy spirit (1 Cor. 12:10 - KJV).Some people are by nature veryperceptive and discerning, but that isnot the “manifestation of discerningof spirits.” It is not a natural ability. Themanifestation of discerning of spiritsinvolves information and power thatflows from God or the Lord Jesus tothe believer via the gift of holy spirit inthat believer. No matter how naturallyperceptive a person is, he will not beable to accurately discern the presenceof a demon, and will certainly not beable to cast it out. It takes the revelationand power of God to do that. There are many “spirits” in thisworld, including angels, evil spirits, andthe gift of holy spirit within Christians.Via the manifestation of discerning ofspirits, God or the Lord Jesus is able toinform the Christian if a person is saved, unsaved, or under the influence of ademon. Because of the spiritual battlethat rages around all of us, the mostcommon aspect of discerning of spiritsis dealing with the demonic forces ofthis world.Entering into the battleOur Adversary, the Devil, walksabout as a roaring lion, seeking peopleto devour (1 Pet. 5:8). God has not leftus helpless, but has empowered us todeal with him. The manifestation ofdiscerning of spirits is more than justrecognizing them or distinguishingbetween them, even though “discerning”or “distinguishing” are the most commonways the Greek is translated. Themanifestation of discerning of spiritsinvolves more than just knowledge, itinvolves entering into battle againstthem and casting them out. The Greekword translated “discerning” (diakrisis)has several meanings. It can mean a“distinguishing” or “differentiation.”Also, it can mean to quarrel. 1 One of thedefinitions in Liddel and Scott’s Greeklexicon is “decision by battle, quarrel, dispute.” 2 In the context of dealing withdemons, “discerning,” (diakrisis) is muchmore than just mentally discerning andknowing, it has overtones of quarrelingor fighting, and involves our dealingwith them via the power of God.The manifestation of discerningof spirits is interwoven with the othermanifestations. For example, a believermanifesting discerning of spirits may besimultaneously aware of the presenceof the demon, know what to do aboutthe situation, and begin to command22 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

Receivingthe information about the demonand knowing what to do is similar to,and interwoven with, a message ofknowledge and a message of wisdom, while the casting out the demon canbe in the category of working a miracle(Mark 9:38 and 39), even as a healingcan be a miracle (Acts 4:16).Equipped for the jobEvery Christian will encounterdemons, whether he recognizes them ornot. What a great blessing and comfortto know that God has equipped each ofus to deal with any demon that comesagainst us. Ephesians 6:12, which sayswe wrestle with demonic powers, iswritten to every Christian. Jesus was thefirst person to regularly and effectivelyuse the power of God to recognize andcast out demons (Matt. 8:16, 9:33, 10:1,etc.), and it is primarily from his examplethat we learn about discerning ofspirits. He taught his disciples about thespiritual battle, and commanded themto cast out demons also (Matt. 10:8;Luke 10:17).Through the manifestation ofdiscerning of spirits Peter accuratelydiscerned that Satan filled the heart ofAnanias (Acts 5:3), and Paul knew thatElymas was a child of the Devil (Acts13:10). Via discerning of spirits Paulknew that the slave who was mockingthem was not just a disgruntled pagan, but someone under the influence of ademon, and he also knew the propertime to cast it out, after having put upwith her mocking “many days” (Acts16:16-18).Not a “feeling”The manifestation of discerningof spirits is necessary if Christiansare going to deal effectively with thespiritual realities of this fallen world. Aswith the manifestations of a message ofknowledge and a message of wisdom, discerning of spirits is revelation fromGod, not “guesswork” or “a feeling.” Itis wrong and harmful for any of us tosay that someone has a demon unlesswe get actual revelation about it andthe guidance to reveal it. Too manyChristians mistake their own feelings for“revelation” from God. When it comesto the manifestations of holy spirit, wedare not be like the false prophets whothought their own deep thoughts andfeelings were revelation from God (Jer.14:14). The manifestation of discerningof spirits is one that enables Christiansto set captives free. We must use it likeChrist did in his life, with love, humility, accuracy, and boldness.Notes:1. What is the Manifestation of Gifts of Healing? The God-given spiritual ability to heal by the power of God.It is importantthat Christianssee the differencebetween prayingfor someone andcommandinga healing byrevelation. The manifestation of gifts of healingsis your exercising your God-given spiritualability to heal by the power of God,according to what God or the Lord Jesushas revealed to you by a message ofknowledge or a message of wisdom.Gifts of healings is a manifestationof holy spirit (1 Cor. 12:9), and itoccurs when a Christian, actingon revelation, and by faith, bringsthe power of God to bear on anotherperson’s physical, mental, or emotionalneed and heals him. God does multiplehealings, and each of them is a gift, done out of His grace or mercy, butnot every healing is the manifestationof gifts of healings. Many people arehealed on their own with just a bandaidor some medication, or they maybe healed by the grace of God withoutanother person involved, but that is not“the manifestation” of gifts of healingsbecause the gift of holy spirit insideanother Christian was not employed. To do a healing or miracle, severalmanifestations come into action.First, the person needs a message ofknowledge and/or a message of wisdomto know what the situation is and whatto do about it. Second, he needs themanifestation of faith to bring to passthe healing. Third, he must representChrist on earth and, via the power ofGod, bring the healing to pass as Godsupplies the energy for it. In Acts 1:8,Jesus said that the holy spirit in a personwould give him power. We must be boldand aggressive in using the power thatwe have to help people, and it is notproud or arrogant to do so, especiallywhen the Lord directs us to.Praying vs. commandingIt is important that Christians seethe difference between praying forsomeone and commanding a healing byrevelation. Prayer is very important, andmany verses tell us to pray. However, when it comes to helping God’s peoplevia the manifestation of healing, it isvital to understand that does not meanpraying for someone to be healed.Notice how Jesus healed:Matthew 8:2 and 3(2) A man with leprosy cameand knelt before him and said,“Lord, if you are willing, you canmake me clean.”(3) Jesus reached out his handand touched the man. “I amwilling,” he said. “Be clean!”Immediately he was cured ofhis leprosy.Jesus did not pray for God to healthe leper. He knew he had the powerof God and he used it. Listen to whathe said: “The Spirit of the Lord is onme, because he has anointed me…toproclaim freedom for the prisoners…recovery of sight for the blind, to releasethe oppressed” (Luke 4:18). The spiritof God upon Jesus was what gave himpower. He also had great faith, and a24 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

For further study on the subject of healing (both physical & emotional), visit TruthOrTradition.com/healingDEATH UNTO LIFE / Saved from Sin and DeathNow that’s a novel idea, giventhat most people (as in all) are goingthe other way. Fittingly, it was JesusChrist, the first man who would gofrom death unto life, who coined thephrase, as follows:John 5:24 (KJV)Verily, verily, I say unto you, He thatheareth my word, and believeth onhim that sent me, hath everlastinglife, and shall not come intocondemnation; but is passed fromdeath unto life. What are the prerequisites forthose desiring to reverse the age-oldtrend of life unto death? First, onemust hear the Word of God that isaddressed specifically to him. Second, one must believe what he hears andact upon it. Here is the Word writtento people today who want to go fromdeath unto life (would that be you?):Romans 10:9That if you confess with your mouth,“Jesus is Lord,” and believe in yourheart that God raised him from thedead, you will be saved. What is it that one is saved from?Sin and death. As the following versetells us, those disgusting realities werefoisted upon us by our forefather,Adam.Romans 5:12 (NKJV)Therefore, just as through one mansin entered the world, and deaththrough sin, and thus death spreadto all men, because all sinned --Jesus Christ is the only solutionto the problem of sin and death. Heconquered sin by choosing to live asinless life, all the way to the Cross. Thus God could, and did, raise himfrom the dead, and thus he defeateddeath. How perfect that God choseSpring as the season during which Heraised Jesus from the dead and, sevenweeks later at Pentecost, poured outHis holy spirit (via the Lord Jesus)on mankind in new way. After theirWinter “death,” trees, plants, andflowers spring forth in newness oflife.Likewise, a once-battered Jesusburst forth from the cold, dark tomband became a life-giving light to allwho choose to follow him. If you sochoose, he will instantly fill you withhis divine nature and thereby equipyou to walk and talk with him for therest of your earthly life. And he willone day transform your mortal bodyinto a perfect you so that you canenjoy everlasting life with him.humble and righteous walk before God.Every Christian has the spirit of the Lord, and according to what Jesus said in Acts1:8, each has power.Peter learned from Jesus. Whenhe was going into the Temple, saw thelame man, and received revelation thatthe man had faith to be healed, he said,“…what I have I give you. In the name ofJesus Christ of Nazareth, walk” (Acts 3:6).Peter knew he had power, and he freelygave it, just as he had seen Jesus do onso many occasions. Notice that Peterdid not pray. Once he knew the willof God by revelation, he commandedthe healing. He did the same thing toTabitha, who had died. He prayed forguidance, then turned to the dead bodyand commanded, “Tabitha, get up” (Acts9:40).Paul is another great example to us,because even though he had not beenwith Jesus, he understood the powerthat he had via the holy spirit withinhim. When face to face with Elymas thesorcerer, he commanded. “‘…You aregoing to be blind, and for a time youwill be unable to see the light of the sun.’Immediately mist and darkness cameover him [Elymas]…” (Acts 13:11). InLystra, Paul healed a lame man, saying,“…Stand up on your feet…” (Acts 14:10),and immediately the man stood up andbegan walking. All Christians are able to healThe Word of God was given to us toshow us how to live, and when it comesto helping others and using the powerof God, the lessons are clear. We need toincrease our faith and step forth boldlyto do what the Lord directs us to do.We realize that although the presenceof holy spirit gives each Christian thespiritual power to do healings andmiracles, there are those who will excelin operating these manifestation. Thereis a difference between inherent spiritualability and how that ability will actuallybe evidenced in the life of an individualChristian. Nevertheless, we assert thatmany more Christians would be doinghealings and miracles if they knew theyhad the ability and were confident toact on it.Every Christian has thespirit of the Lord, andaccording to what Jesussaid in Acts 1:8, eachhas power. We need to increaseour faith and step forthboldly to do what theLord directs us to do.May/June 2008 | STFonline.org/sower 25

What is the Manifestation of Working of Miracles? The God-given spiritual ability to do miracles by the power ofGod.The manifestation of working ofmiracles is your exercising your Godgivenspiritual ability to do miracles bythe power of God, according to what Godor the Lord Jesus has revealed to you by amessage of knowledge or a message ofwisdom. The manifestation of working ofmiracles (1 Cor. 12:10-KJV) is verysimilar to the manifestation of giftsof healings, except that the power ofGod results in a miracle. Like the othermanifestations listed in 1 Corinthians12:8-10, it is a “manifestation”(somethingmade visible or obvious) of holy spirit,so it is done only by those who have thegift of holy spirit. That, however, does notmean Christians are the only ones whocan do miracles. God and the Lord Jesuscan do them without people’s help, andso can witches and others who utilizedemonic power, just as the magicianswho opposed Moses (Exod. 7:11).More miraclesThe word “working” is in the plural inthe Greek text, and would more properlybe translated “energizings.” When itcomes to miracles, the plural shouldencourage us as to God’s intention. He does not desire to do one miracle acentury. Miracles may not be an everyday occurrence in the life of any givenperson, but they should be happeningfrequently in the Church, includingmiracles of healing, i.e., instantaneoushealing. God wants believers to rise upin their faith so as to bring forth manymiracles. Miracles deliver people; theydemonstrate the power, presence, andlove of God; and they build people’sfaith for more miracles.Although a couple of differentGreek words get translated as “miracle,”the word that should be, and often is,translated “miracle” is the Greek nounWhen God gives us revelation to dosomething, that is not the time to prayabout it, that is the time to do it.dunamis, which is properly translated“power.” A “miracle” is a “power,” thatis, the power of God being appliedand openly displayed. To do a healingor miracle, several manifestationscome into play. First, the person needsrevelation to know what the situationis and what to do about it. Second, heneeds the manifestation of faith tobring to pass the miracle. Third, he mustrepresent Christ on earth and, via thepower of God, bring to pass the miracleas God supplies the energy for it.Time to act! While it is important to pray formiracles, when God or the Lord givesyou the revelation to do a miracle, thatis not the time to pray; it is the time toact and command the miracle by thepower of God. In that sense, miracleshappen like healings happen, whenbelievers stand in faith and commandthem to occur based on the revelationthey receive. We have good examples ofhow to do miracles from studying greatmen like Moses, Joshua, Samuel, Elijah,Elisha, and of course Jesus. For example, when Moses did the miracles (plagues)in Egypt, he did not pray to God, “Godplease turn the water of the Nile Riverto blood.” No, God had already toldhim to do it, so he just did the miracle. When God gives us revelation to dosomething, that is not the time to prayabout it, that is the time to do it. That iswhere too many Christians fail. They arecomfortable with God doing miracles26 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008

If we ask someone to dosomething for us, but they do not, weare disappointed. We may even askthe person why he did not do it. That isexactly the situation with God. When He,or the Lord Jesus, give us revelation todo something, that is them asking us todo it, and we should get the job done. One time Moses forgot this lesson. TheIsraelites were trapped against the sea, with Pharaoh’s army bearing down onthem. Moses tried to calm the people bysaying they should stand still and see thesalvation that God would work that day.Sounds okay, doesn’t it? Not to God. Hesaid to Moses, “Why are you crying out tome?” (Exod. 14:15). God reminded Mosesto act (“…stretch out your hand over thesea and divide it…” (Exod. 14:16-NASB).Note that God told Moses to divide thesea. When Moses acted in faith upon whatGod had revealed to him, the sea divided;and it closed back when Moses closed it(Exod. 14:26 and 27).You have power from GodJesus Christ told us we would havepower (Acts 1:8). Now it is up to us tobelieve that he was telling the truth, havefaith in the One who gave us power, andlearn to walk by the revelation God givesus so that we can bless His people. Let uslisten carefully for revelation guidance, have faith that we can do anything Godtells us to do, and act boldly, includingusing the name of Jesus Christ withauthority. Let us bring to pass the miraclesand healings that God so desires for Hispeople. An Explanation of 1 Corinthians 12:8-10Corinthians 12:8-10 seems to1 say that each Christian is givenonly one of the manifestations, andthis has confused and weakenedthe Church. It is important that weproperly translate and understandthese verses.1 Corinthians 12:7-11(Author’s translation)(7) Now to each one is giventhe manifestation of thespirit for the common good.(8) For to one is giventhrough the spirit a messageof wisdom; and to anothera message of knowledgebecause of the same spirit;(9) to a different one faithby the same spirit; and toanother gifts of healings bythe one spirit;(10) and to another workingof miracles; to anotherprophecy; to anotherdiscerning of spirits; to adifferent one various kinds oftongues; and to another theinterpretation of tongues.(11) Now all these theone and the same Spiritenergizes, distributing toeach one individually just ashe purposes. Each Christian can hear from God(a message of wisdom or knowledge),speak in tongues, interpret tongues, prophesy, have faith, and do miracles, healings and cast out demons. In spiteof that, there has been great confusionin the Church about how many ofthe manifestations an individualis able to operate. At first glance, 1Corinthians 12:8-10 does appear tosay that any one person will be givenonly one of the manifestations. Thiscontradicts the evidence we gain fromother scriptures, so what do theseverses mean? The explanation of whythe Bible says “to one…to another”becomes clear as we study the contextof 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.The Church in Corinth wasdeeply divided. This is apparent fromthe very first chapter of Corinthians, when Jesus, via Paul, appeals to themso that there would be “no divisions”among the people (1 Cor. 1:10).There was jealousy and quarrelingamong the believers (1 Cor. 3:3). Theywere even suing one another in theRoman courts (1 Cor. 6:1-7). Theywould not share their food with eachother, and when they came togetherto eat, one got drunk while anotherstayed hungry (1 Cor. 11:21). Theywere even trying to use the divisionsbetween them to determine who hadthe approval of God (1 Cor. 11:18and 19)...To read the rest of this article, visitTruthOrTradition.com/ExplanationMay/June 2008 | STFonline.org/sower 27

Fuel for the Fire is written by the Teens and Twenties of Spirit & Truth Fellowship International.by Krysti WallerHello and God bless you! My name is Krysti Wallerand I am 15 years old. It was on my heart to preparean article on how God sees women in the Body ofChrist. Almost every day I see young women trying to fitinto the world’s standard of beauty and worth, and I can’thelp but wonder if they know how much they are valued byGod. To dive further into this topic, let’s first break down thelies that the Devil tells women:1.) I am ugly and unaccepted by God and/or others.Sadly, so many women today base their worth on howthey look on the outside because they want to fit into theworld’s category of beauty. The world’s standard of beauty islooking attractive on the outside and enhancing your featuresby things such as wearing clothes that attract attention toor away from a certain body part, or even cosmetic surgery.Lots of times women feel like they need such things to beaccepted. However, that is certainly not the case!2.) I need many material things to show off so I fit in witheveryone and look successful.Women sometimes feel like they need to have the mostexpensive car, nice clothes or lots of money to be successfuland admired so they will fit in. I, being a young woman, know that we strive to be admired and desired by others, and sometimes we will do anything to get that kind ofacknowledgment. Oftentimes we do not realize the truthGod says about us in His Word. Now that we know a couple of the specific lies that Satantells women, let’s see what is true about us. Here is a Scriptureverse regarding the first lie that I mentioned, that may causewomen to sometimes feel they are ugly and unaccepted.Proverbs 31:30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but awoman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Here, God is saying that outer charm is deceptive andouter beauty will come and go, but a woman that respectsHim is to be praised. Isn’t that the truth! I’ve met someabsolutely gorgeous looking women, but unfortunately theyCharm is deceptive, and beautyis fleeting; but a woman whofears the Lord is to be praised.- Proverbs 31:30weren’t so gorgeous on the inside so I didn’t really enjoybeing around them. So far, what God has said in this verse istrue. Now let’s look at the other part. I’ve met some womenwho weren’t the most beautiful women on the outside butthey had such gorgeous and precious hearts that made themso beautiful to me, because they respected God! I rememberthem more than the women who were beautiful on theoutside, because the heart is what matters, not the outwardappearance. God’s Word is totally true!I also want to point out what God sees in women. Thisis His view on us:28 STFonline.org/sower | May/June 2008
