ALSPEK HThe direct measurement of hydrogen in aluminium alloysWhat is ALSPEK H?ALSPEK H is a device for the direct measurement ofhydrogen concentration in aluminium alloys. It is builtaround an innovative electrochemical sensor that iscapable of the rapid and real-time measurement ofhydrogen. The sensor is mounted inside a thermocouple housingwhich is protected by a plasma coating to achievelong life in aluminium melts. The signal from the sensor is processed by ananalyser and displayed as hydrogen concentrationin ml/100g.The ALSPEK H device enables the foundry to monitorthe melt quality and to report this data for qualitycontrol purposes.A full diagnostic capability in the analyser alsoprovides a continuous check on the function of thesensor ensuring optimum performance at all times. How it worksThe probe is based on a ceramic material (CaZrO 3-In)which can conduct hydrogen ions. All ALSPEK H sensors contain a “Solid StateReference”; a solid material which has a knownhydrogen concentration. The electrode exposed tothe solid state reference is the “Reference Electrode”and the electrode exposed to the measured gas is the“Measuring Electrode”.The figure below shows a schematic arrangement ofa probe to measure hydrogen concentration in moltenaluminium.Hydrogen solubility strongly depends on temperature. Therefore the melt temperature must also be measuredin order to calculate the dissolved hydrogen level.Principle of probe operation2

ALSPEK H ApplicationsALSPEK H is a robust and user-friendly device thatcan be used in a variety of ways to improve foundryperformance.ALSPEK HALSPEK H is delivered in an aluminium case with amulti-colour graphic display. It is designed for extendedquality control and certification purposes as well asto control the FDU degassing process using pre-setminimum or maximum hydrogen levels.Features:• Spot measurements• Continous measurements• Touch screen• Up to 17 days data logging• Data transfer optionsALSPEK H MultiThe ALSPEK H Multi read out unit can record datafrom up to 4 different sensors. It is mainly designed tomeasure hydrogen levels in holding / casting furnacesfor high-quality castings.Features:• WLAN or LAN connection to sensors• Battery powered sensor operations• Up to 50 m distance between sensor and receiverALSPEK H MiniThe ALSPEK H Mini unit is in a compact design whichenables the operator to carry it within the foundry. Itis suitable for spot measurement in both holding andmelting furnaces.Features:• Comfortable display• Single button operation to save data• Input operation for batch numbers• Data transfer via USB or memory cardSensor for ALSPEK unitsALSPEK HALSPEK H MultiALSPEK H Mini3

0,00 1,000 1000ALSPEK HThe direct measurement of hydrogen in aluminium alloysMelt quality measurementThe ease of use of ALSPEK H means that it canreadily be used to measure melt quality in differentlocations around the foundry. Fast and accurate spotmeasurements of hydrogen concentrations can bemade in ladles and furnaces, or the probe can beleft immersed in one location to provide continuousreal time measurement of hydrogen levels. It is alsopossible to make real time hydrogen measurementsduring a degassing treatment.ALSPEK H can also be used for the development oroptimisation of melt treatment procedures.Process controlThe ability to measure during a degassing treatmentmeans that ALSPEK H can be used to achieve realcontrol over the degassing process.ALSPEK H can be combined with a Foseco rotarydegassing unit so that the output of the sensorcan be used to trigger both high and low hydrogenalarms. These alarm outputs can in turn be used tostart or stop the degassing unit. The portable analyser can be fitted with these alarmoutputs to maintain complete flexibility; alternatively,ALSPEK H can be integrated into the control panelof an FDU to provide a dedicated controllabledegassing unit.ALSPEK H screen shotHydrogenTemperature05/2011 · re 750 e*FOSECO, the Logo and ALSPEK are trade marks of the Vesuvius Group, registered in certain countries, used under licence.
