temple newsJEWISH LEARNING:NOT JUST FOR CHILDRENby Keren Alpert, Rabbinic AssociateIf your last Jewish learning experience was at age 13,you may not know these amazing facts:• The ten lost tribes weren’t directionally challenged. They assimilated into Assyrianculture, which must have been very enticing.• Hebrew was nearly dead as a spoken language until a visionary (some say a nut!)named Eliezer ben Yehuda single-handedly created a Hebrew dictionary, coming upwith new Hebrew words, and insisting that only Hebrew be spoken in his house.• One of the greatest heroes of Judaism was Yochanan ben Zakkai, who foresaw thedestruction of the Temple and insisted on establishing a yeshiva, so that Jews couldstudy and learn how to continue to be Jewish without the Temple at its center.• Jewish mourning rituals are psychologically sound and helpful in the grieving process.• The collection of prayers in the prayer book didn’t develop until long after the Bibleended. Each prayer has a different metaphor for G-d, and collectively contains theoverarching theology of Judaism.• Judaism had its own civil war, with a Northern and a Southern kingdom.Included in this bulletin are multiple opportunities for Jewish learning for adults. In addition,we live in a community that offers myriad opportunities for adult Jewish learning, many underthe auspices of our Jewish Federation. I have been privileged to be a part of the FlorenceMelton faculty for several years and I am proud of the many Temple members who have takenon the challenge of becoming graduates of that program.I urge you to get to know your own heritage. Do not put off learning, because it opens newdoors and new understandings. Our congregation’s goal is to create a community of life-longlearners, not a community whose learning ends at 13.In addition, I urge you to investigate your children’s knowledge of Judaism. If they are nolonger in religious school, are you satisfied with what they know? Do they have in theirbackpack of Jewish knowledge the ability to comfort a friend in mourning, to defend Judaismwhen faced with anti-Semitism on campus and the ability to differentiate between Jewish andnon-Jewish beliefs? If the answer is no, then they need more education, too!HELP FIGHT HUNGERWITH YOURDONATIONS TO“CAN-DEMONIUM”Help answer the needs ofthe hungry in our Jewishcommunity. installation remarksPRESIDENT JIM DEUTCHMANJUNE 25, 2009I promised to give part of my Presidentialaddress in Rap. Accordingly, I will do thatnow:It is with great delight that I deliver thisaddress in RAP, the only rap I know. Itis obviously, the rap of our people. I amhonored to report that our congregationhas sustained itself during these troubledtimes. It has been done by the intensivework by our people. This includes theentire Minyan of Temple employees,Senior Staff (I will characterize them as the Temple Team) andall of us volunteers. The Rap portion is now over.We have been successful in our efforts to operate our congregationwithin the financial limits of our revenues. We have been assistedin our revenues by two very significant factors:1. The Annual Appeal which raised over $130,0002. The Investment Committee which wisely adjusted ourinvestments to a less risk oriented policy, prior to the debacleon Wall Street. The results of the Investment Committee work preserved ourinvestment assets and assured us of a relatively consistent returnduring the financial down-turn. Obviously, the Annual Appealprovided a new revenue source to cushion our budget. The effortsof our belt tightening have been significant and somewhat painful;however, we have preserved most jobs and continue to provideour much needed services to our members and community. The education programs have become the bright light within ourcommunity and the nursery school has become a great source fornew members for our congregation. Our music department hasshone within the budget limitations and continues to bring usa rich and varied portion of inspiration within and out of ourreligious services. Our catering committee has been innovative and leading us intonew arenas. It should be noted that our Caterer, Paul Wertz, hasbecome a Kosher Caterer. He maintains his kosher kitchen atCongregation Beth Ahm allowing us to additionally offer koshercatered events at Temple. Our building & facilities committee has been vigorously workingon completing the work to quantify the renovations necessary forour building to achieve energy efficient operations (the greeningof the Temple). I identify the greening of the Temple to havetwo meanings:1. The energy efficient operations of the facilities2. The money saving effects that energy efficiency will yield toour budget. The Ways & Means Committee has been doing yeoman’s workin setting the budget controls and supervising their compliance. The committee has been at times referred to as an offshoot of theGermany’s National Socialist Party. We have been active and effective in serving our wider communitythrough our Social Action Committee. They have done so manythings that I will name just a couple:1. Easter Candy Baskets for a Detroit Elementary School &Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church2. Mitzvah Meals program3. Collecting food, clothing and other necessities for those inneed in our communityOur auxiliaries are ever active in providing service and a connectionwithin our greater Temple family. They include the Sisterhood,Brotherhood, Ambassadors, Adventurers, Next Gen, YoungPeoples Society and of course The Usher Corps…Sempre Fi!Finally, I again mention one of the most moving groups in ourcongregation: The Braille Bindery and its production of readingmaterials for the blind. This program operates weekly bothtranscribing books and assembling and shipping them to thosewho need this service. It has been staffed by volunteers for nearlyfive decades and headed by Ilene Sawyer.Allow me to Perorate:We do good things at Temple Beth El and we will continue to dothese things and more as we adjust to our ever changing societyand demographics. Again, thank you all for giving me the honorto serve the congregation and I look forward to the great workfrom all our members and Temple Team into the future.HELP US KEEP IN TOUCH!To better serve you and provide information about Temple events, changes in the Temple calendar and more,we would like to update our email records. Many of the email addresses we have on file are no longer correct andmany of your addresses are not on record. temple newsHILLER’S MARKETS & TEMPLE BETH EL -PARTNERS FOR MITZVAH MEALSby Rabbi Daniel B. SymeWe are now entering our third month of our partnership with Hiller’s Market, offeringMitzvah Meals to those in need in the Jewish community. The program, which offersa box of high-quality groceries at a substantial discount, is a Jewish version of the verysuccessful program Hiller’s first launched in March with Ward Evangelical PresbyterianChurch in Northville. Anyone in our Temple community or the Jewish communityat-large may apply, whether they themselves are in need or someone they know and careabout might welcome the assistance. In July, 66 families benefited from the program. Each box of food costs $30; in the store, these items would retail for approximately$50. Jim Hiller has generously reduced the price by not taking a profit on these items. Each box contains five meals to feed a family of four. These meals are not kosher, butcontain no pork products or shellfish. Paul Wertz of Excellence Too Catering has createdmonthly menus.August orders will be accepted through Monday, August 17. Each order must beaccompanied by a $30 check. Orders will be capped at the first 150 requests. Ordersreceived after August 17, or after the first 150 orders have been placed, will be appliedto the September pickup. The August orders will be placed with Hiller’s on August17and delivered to Beth El by Temple member, Judy Roberts on Monday, August 24for assembly by Temple volunteers. Orders may be picked up at Temple Tuesday,August 25 at 3 pm or Wednesday, August 26 between 10 am and Noon.We are living in very tough times – economic circumstances that many of us have neverexperienced. So many people feel the pain of this bad economy. They’ve lost jobs andseen the simple costs of living rise exponentially. It is easy to give in to fear because we donot know what is around the corner, but Temple Beth El has always been a communityand a congregation dedicated to help those who need it most.---- ✄ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(please print)PLEASE RESERVE ________ MITZVAH MEALS @ $30 EACH.My check for $_________, made out to “Temple Beth El”, is enclosed.Name __________________________________________ Member __ Non-member __Daytime Phone Number____________________________________________________Please check one of these options:Temple may select and give the Mitzvah Meal box to a recipient of their choosing.❑❑❑❑Please give the Mitzvah Meal box to:Name _____________________________ Phone_______________________I will pick up my own Mitzvah Meal box Tuesday, August 25 orI will pick up my own Mitzvah Meal box Wednesday, August 26Mail checks payable and mail to:Temple Beth El, 7400 Telegraph Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301, Attn. They were troubled withliquidating the large cash & fixedincome investments and re-deployingthem into the equity markets. It wasthis hesitation and studied concernthat saved our investments from thedevastation the markets wrought. Weare stronger and better able to takeconsidered action with the investmentasset policy, forged under his watch.(It should be noted we now haveadded the word “eleemosynary” toour vocabulary.) Stewart Frank, wepresent you the President’s Cup.Temple Beth El’s revenues had beenstagnant and balancing its budgetwith expense cuts yielded limitedresults. New thinking was required. We needed to create a program to‘Bridge the Gap’ between the expensesand the revenues. This concept wasunique in our history and novel inattempting to balance the burden ofcarrying on our programs withoutspending ourselves into deficit &debt. The solution was found throughthorough and exhaustive research.David Handleman, we present youthe President’s Cup.9

My parents came over to America becauseof anti-Semitism in Russia. It was prohibited and prosecuted to practice Judaism or anyreligion for that matter, in Russia. So I was lucky to be born an American Jew. My parents have given me everythingthat they could not have. They gave me the ability to live by the Jewish traditions, freefrom presecution and anti-Semitism. I can say that I am proud to be Jewish and I am alsofree to admit it to anyone. It might sound strange or funny to you, but to my family, thatis something that they could not speak of. I feel blessed that I can stand up here in frontof a whole congregation and not be ashamed to say that I, Adi Smorgonsky, am proudto be Jewish. At the time of my grandparents, it could have cost them their lives. My family has been members of Temple Beth El, for almost 20 years. For nine yearsof my life, I attended Hillel Day School, for Jewish kids. This is my tenth year attendingthe religious school at Temple. I was the first member in my family to become a BatMitzvah. I am also the first one in my family to get confirmed. Thanks to my parents for spending years away from their family in order for me tobe a Jew, and enable me to have the choice to practice Judaism. Every night before I goto bed I thank my parents in my head for giving me the ability to live my life this way.I hope that sometime in your life you have thought about how you are blessed tohave the freedom to be Jewish, and how your older generations could have been killed ifsomeone knew they were Jewish. I hope that you have never insulted someone becauseof their religion, because being a Jew, we have been insulted many times in our historyof existence. Most of us did not choose to be Jewish we were born into it. But we havechosen to practice it and to keep the tradition alive through generations. I know that Iwill make sure that my kids are brought up Jewish because I want them to know abouthow much the Jewish people struggled and suffered through generations. And whatsacrifices my immediate family made for them to be Jewish, in a free land. I lastly hopethat you are as proud to be a Jew as I am.I have a lot of people to thank for me being here tonight as a proud Jew, and I thankyou for joining me in my rite of passage.MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR TOT SHABBAT!Especially for babies, toddlers, kids, moms, dads andgrandparents! Itturned out to be the picture perfect weddingshe envisioned. My husband, Paul, and Icouldn’t have been happier with her choiceof a wonderful young man, Jeremy. We trulylike his family and at the beginning of theirrelationship, both families agreed to stayfriends even if the kids broke up! Jeremy isbright, fun, caring and will do anything hecan to make our daughter happy……and he’s Jewish. As we stood under the Chuppah, the only word that describesthe way we felt was “kvelling” with pride and joy. Keren Alpertofficiated along with the rabbi from Jeremy’s temple who seemedto remember that Jeremy was less than a model student. OurAunt Ljuba from Berkeley, California was the cantor. That sixby six foot space emanated love. For these children the Hebrew words l’ dor vador, passing ourJewish heritage down from one generation to the next, willcontinue. It is not always the case. While as parents and educators we should always let what weexpect and care about be known, we also have to accept that ourchildren do not always do or want the same things we do.All the attributes I gave to Jeremy, other than being Jewish, makehim a “mentch”, a good human being. Most of the time that’sall that matters. My Romanian, somewhat accented grandmother had the serenityprayer hanging in her kitchenG-d grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change;courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference--Reinhold Niebuhr11

Each year, thechildren keep a journal of pictures, mementos and quotes about their experiences atBeth El. I often think I should start my own journal for special moments and specialchildren, particular successes and even those few disappointments. I always thinkthat I can keep those special times with me in my mind, but I know that as timepasses, some of these events, and even some of the children fade. Summers come andgo, but if they don’t stay in my mind forever, I know that this opportunity to be withso many children will always be with me in my heart.Once again, thank you to our wonderful summer staff and our terrific helpers formaking one more summer a fun, loving and memorable one.Especially for babies, toddlers, kids, moms, dads & grandparents too! We’re getting ready to greet the New Year atROSH HASHANA TOT SHABBATSaturday, September 12Welcome Shabbat with our Clergy and Educator in afun-filled service for the younger set.Service 9:30 amSnack ’n’ Crafts 10:30 amBrett Krauss loves the sandbox!13

temple affi liatesA HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE BETH EL BROTHERHOODBy Larry ImermanThis is the fourth and final installment of the history of theTemple Brotherhood. The period included in this discussion startswith Y2K and ends with the present day.The new century brought presentations on and financialsupport of programs dealing with AIDs and teen suicide. Thegroup still conducted the Brotherhood Shabbat, but introduceda multi-media presentation to make the service more contemporary. In addition, Brotherhood assembled readers for the YomKippur Music and Meditation Service.Brotherhood contributed money to the Jewish Book Fairand the Jewish Film Festival. Sunday breakfasts, which had beenhalted, were restarted and the meal offerings expanded, causing adramatic rise in average attendance. The group purchased children’sbooks for the library in honor of those becoming a Bar orBat Mitzvah. The group, working with the Mitzvah Day Committee atthe Jewish Federation, organized volunteers for Christmas assignmentsat soup kitchens, food banks and nursing homes. Brotherhoodmembers worked with members of Sisterhood to entertainresidents of JARC homes. They landscaped the Temple groundswith trees and flowers. The group coordinated the semi-annualblood drive with the American Red Cross. However, in contrastto past social action projects, most of the programs did not involvelong-term commitments, but rather one-time events wherethe Brotherhood often played the role of organizer.Brotherhood continued its arrangement with a videographerto record Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies both as a service tothe congregation and as a source of income for the group. Membersalso sold food at cultural events as a way of earning moneyfor Brotherhood projects. A Golf Outing in honor of long-timeBrotherhood member, Izzy Malin, occurred both as a fellowshipevent and as a way to raise funds for the group’s projects. A teamfrom Brotherhood joined the intercongregational men’s baseballleague.PART FOUR: A NEW CENTURY 2000 – 2009As the Detroit area economy deteriorated throughout the“aught” decade, the Brotherhood assisted needy members by usingits Fellowship Endowment to underwrite membership dues.It also established as part of its yearly budget a “Good and WelfareAccount” meant to pay the cost of Brotherhood events forthose financially unable to attend. While the organization’s efforts were positive, most of thedecade was a period of retrenchment due to the falling membershipand uneven fundraising. Brotherhood members no longerdirected traffic during the High Holy Days, and the Usher Corpsbecame a Temple committee. Many of the Brotherhood’s traditionalprojects either could not be funded or were funded jointlywith another group. The group discontinued issuing the Mirror. The Culinary Committee’s activities ended. The Brotherhoodwithdrew its support of the NFTB, an organization it helpedcreate 85 years before, as well as its active support of the JewishChautauqua Society. Nor did the Brotherhood continue tosponsor programs on Jewish religious topics or bring non-Jewishclergy to Temple. The Brotherhood – with the advent of the 21st century – hasbeen compelled to ask itself a series of hard questions. What isits core mission? How can that mission be achieved in a periodof limited manpower and financial resources? How can men atTemple best interact with each other in an Internet age of “Blackberry,”Facebook, and “Twitter?” What old programs should becontinued and which need to be replaced?Rabbi Leo Franklin’s original vision of a men’s club at Templebuilt loyalty to the congregation and kept men involved inJudaism. Yet, the synagogue-centered model of the late 19thcentury may not be the most effective model for the challengesof the 21st century. What that model may be and how to transformthe model into reality is the challenge for this generation ofBrotherhood leaders. For members and guests, children welcome.Come join us after Shabbat morning services to watch and discussclassic films with Jewish themes!12:30 PMFOLLOWING KIDDUSHAugust 8“Crossing Delancey”RSVP to the Rabbis’ Study,248-851-1100, ext. 3142.16
