Munich´s Academy of Fine Arts
celebrates 200 years Famous alumni of the academy include Wilhelm
The Academy of Fine Arts in Munich is one of
the oldest and most famous academies of arts
in Germany.
On the occasion of its bicentenary, the House of
Arts is devoting an extensive exhibition to the
eventful history of this institution from May 30
through August 31, 2008. Tours of the exhibition
will be offered in German, English, French and
Italian.
Mini golf now at Munich
Airport’s visitor park
For those who like to spend their transfer time
having fun and getting fresh air, Munich Airport
offers a unique experience: its own mini golf
course.
The new 18-hole facility at the airport´s visitors
park adds another fun leisure-time activity for
outings to the airport. Airport visitors as well as
amateur mini golf players can test their skills on
the course.
In the future Munich Airport will host exhibition
tournaments for the German Mini Golf Association
and qualification tournaments for state
and national championships.
The course is open from March until October
on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on
weekends and public holidays from 11 a.m. until
6 p.m. Reduced rates for children up to 16
years of age are available.
Munich Airport´s mini golf course provides a
great opportunity to go on excursion with the
whole family.

Transrapid – in ten minutes
from downtown to the airport
Munich Airport´s operating company, FMG is
pleased with the announcement regarding the
construction of Europe´s first maglev (magnetic
levitation), a transrapid rail link between Munich´s
city center and Munich Airport.
"This is a key move to secure Munich´s competitiveness
that will generate an enormous boost
for the economic development of the entire
region. For Munich Airport this is a tremendous
opportunity to continue its success story," said
Dr. Michael Kerkloh, CEO of FMG.
The trip between Munich´s central station and
Munich Airport will take only 10 minutes, and
the maglev train will depart for the airport every
10 minutes from the city center. The maglev
train will establish optimal linkage between the
national railway system and the air transportation
network.
Kerkloh added, "In the future this will make it
much more appealing for our passengers to
come to the airport by rail. With the construction
of a third runway and the implementation of
the maglev rail link, our airport will remain future
ready and competitive for a long time to come."

Coburg – town of castles and palaces
Veste Coburg
The Upper Franconian town of Coburg is situated north of Bavaria. The former seat of the Dukes of
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha has a population of roughly 42,000 people, but has a wealth of treasures and
architectural monuments that would be befitting of many a larger city.
Owing to the fact that there are many castles
and palaces in Coburg and its surrounding areas,
the town is rightfully located on the so-called
"road of castles". The Veste Coburg fortress,
Coburg´s landmark sits on top of a hill; Ehrenburg
Palace was the main residence of the Coburg
dukes in the town itself; Callenberg Castle
was the former summer residence of the dukes;
Rosenau Castle, Prince Albert´s birthplace and
the imposing baroque castle of Tambach has
been the setting for many "aristocratic romance"
in films.
Coburg created links with royal families all over
Europe through its wide-spread marriage policy.
The most famous marriages being those
of Queen Victoria to her cousin, Prince Albert
of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and Princess Sibylla
of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the Swedish crown
prince Gustaf Adolf, the latter took place in
Coburg in 1932.
Other famous people have also stayed here in
Coburg: Richard Strauss, Hektor Berlioz, Nicolo
Paganini, and Franz Liszt all stayed in the State
Theatre at some time; Martin Luther, who
sought refuge in the Veste for six months, preached
at St. Moriz church; and also Johann
Strauss (son) who, due to an affair of the heart,
gave up his Austrian citizenship and became a
citizen of Coburg. In his honour, Coburg plays
host to the "Johann Strauss Music Days" and
the "Alexander Giradi Music Competition" every
three years.

Coburg is also a center of the doll- and toymaking
industry. One can visit interesting museums
as well as the International Dolls Festival in
Neustadt near Coburg.
Rödental, which is only about seven kilometers
apart from Coburg, is the "home" of the world famous
Hummel figurines.

FEB 01 - FEB 03 Bob and Skeleton World Cup
2008. These high-profile events take place at
the foot of the Watzmann Mountain at lake
Königssee, in Berchtesgaden. Fighting for the
titles in the disciplines of women´s 2-bob,
men´s 2- and 4-bob as well as women´s and
men´s skeleton, the world´s best bobsleigh
crews and skeleton riders will compete in
Bavaria.

FEB 28 - MAY 18 Exhibition "True Romance".
The exhibition shows, how the perceptions of
love in different epochs and genres have been
changed with paintings. The particular attention
lies on the current varieties of love topics.

MAR 05 - MAR 09 International Jazz Week
in Burghausen. Traditional jazz streaming
and current genres can be expected at the
International Jazz Week in Burghausen. The
following famous international jazz artists
have been there: Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie,
Michel Petrucciani, Albert Mangelsdorff, Chet
Baker, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel
Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Stan
Getz, Stephane Grappely, Horace Silver, Joe
Venuti for example. Since a few years the
International Jazz Week in Burghausen has
been enlarged by the Jazz Summer Night and
the Jazz Autumn.

MAR 28 International Music Parade. More
than 400 brass and military musicians from
eleven nations will take part on the seventh
international music parade in Munich. A multifarious
program of folklore and classical
music to the point of jazz can be expected. At
the end of this three hours event all bands will
unite to a big orchestra of the nations and will
play a medley of the most famous marsh
melodies.

APR 11 - APR 27 Spring festival on the
Theresienwiese. An amusement park with
more than 100 carnival rides and diverse beer
tents with daily changed live-music invites
for celebrating spring festival on the
Theresienwiese.

MAY 09 - MAY 11 "Sachs Franken Classic".
The "Sachs Franken Classic" is a part of the
German Rally Companionship. More than 150
automobiles from different manufacturers and
epochs will come to the "Sachs Franconia
Classic" in Bad Kissingen. The rally will lead
through the Franconian wine countryside for
instance. The event ends with the classic
cars´ presentation, a meeting of classic cars
in Bad Kissingen and the presentation ceremony
at the "Wandelhalle" of the spa resort
Bad Kissingen. During the following years the
"Sachs Franken Classic" became a top event
of the German classic car sports.

The Goldsteig –
new "Quality-Hiking-Trail" of Germany
The Goldsteig opened on October 31, 2007 and
belongs to the longest, multisided and accredited
hiking trails of Germany.
The trail offers approximately 660 kilometers of
hiking terrain with attractive scenery, cultural
sightseeing and a hiking guidance system along
the way. The trail stretches across long passages
through the Upper Palatinate and Bavarian
Forest, northeast of Munich.
Five nature parks with their diverse landscapes
and low mountain range can be explored along
the trail.
Mount Kaitersberg
Along the 660 kilometers of hiking trail, one can
find hotel accommodations and restaurants,
offering typical Bavarian cuisine and packed
lunches. Services such as a hiking expert, weather
information, trail maps and a hotel reservation
service are also available.

New hotel planned at Munich Airport
Munich Airport has laid the groundwork for yet
another major enhancement to its infrastructure
due to increased demand for on-site accommodation.
Novotel, the Accor Group´s business and family
brand, is to build and operate a new hotel at
Munich Airport. The start of construction is slated
for early 2008, and is scheduled to open in
the fall of 2009.
The new Novotel will be located on the central
access road leading up to the airport. It will be
linked to the airport´s rapid train station, and
will also offer a bus service to shuttle guests
comfortably between the hotel and the airport.
The property will offer 250 rooms and will be
located on the airport premises, within easy
reach of both terminals.
In addition to queen-size beds, there will be sofas
in each room, to accommodate families with
children. The hotel is targeting both the business
and leisure traveller, particularly families.

Munich Airport gets
even more "powerful"
It is now easier for passengers to recharge electronic
devices in Terminal 2.
The power points are easier to find as they are
located in the waiting zones near the departure
gates. Passengers can use the time before boarding
to charge notebooks, mobile phones and
MP3 players.
The power points carry 230 alternating volts and
can be used by double-pole euro connectors,
contour connectors or German protect contact
connectors.

The Tannheimer Tal –
a paradise for nature lovers
The Tannheimer Tal with its clear mountain lakes
and idyllic villages is located 1,100 meters
northwest of Tirol (Austria). Tannheimer Tal is
known to be one of the most popular hiking destinations
in Austria.
With its more than 300 kilometers of marked
paths the Tannheimer Tal at the border to the Bavarian
Allgäu is in summer as well as in winter
a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor sportsman.
There are 70 kilometers of winter hiking
trails and a 140-kilometer long cross-country ski
run, which is a highlight in the Tannheimer Tal.
Tannheimer Tal is also host to the traditional
"Typically Munich!"
Commemorating the 850th anniversary of the founding of Munich, the Münchner Stadtmuseum
(Munich City Museum) will open a new and exciting permanent exhibition: “Typically Munich!”
For the first time a comprehensive presentation
of Munich´s history and culture, from the founding
legend up to the present will be on exhibit.
The newly renovated and decorated galleries
occupying three floors of the historical arsenal
offer the visitor a completely new perspective
at St.-Jakobs-Platz.
Exclusive highlights from the vast collections –
a "best-of" selection, illustrating the characteristic
and the typical – are presented in a cultural
and historical context.
Tannheimer Tal
balloon festival January 6-20, 2008 with over 25
giant balloons. A balloon glowing event takes
place on January 9, 2008.
A special jewel in the Tannheimer Tal is the nature
protection area around lake Vilsalp, which
is home to more than 700 unique plants and diverse
protected species.

Tegernsee Valley – one of
Bavaria´s jewel boxes
Lake Tegernsee
Tegernsee Valley is located only 50 kilometers
south-east of the Bavarian capital Munich and
one hour by car from Munich Airport. The five
villages of the Tegernsee Valley, Bad Wiessee,
Gmund, Kreuth, Rottach-Egern and Tegernsee,
