www.newadventurerv.comthe wind blows algae and planktonto the windy shore where it stacksup. Shad feed off of plankton andbass feed off of shad. Both the shadand the bass like to actively feedshallow along a wind-blown shore. When waves are breaking over apoint or along a shoreline, we lookfor deeper water nearby. We expectthe bass to be holding in deep waterbut close to the shallow, breakingwaves. When fishing a shoreline,we hold the boat off shore, throwlures into the breaking waves andretrieve them to where we think thebass are holding in deeper water. For this type of fishing we prefercrankbaits. Our favorite crankbaitsfor this purpose are 6A Bombersand Wiggle Warts. We throw threedifferent colors.First, we try a lure that matchesthe local crayfish. If this doesnʼtwork we throw shad colored lures, and if this doesnʼt work we throwlures that are predominantly chartreuse. We also throw spinner baits intoRVʼs By: JaycoGulf StreamAdventure2456 Route 21 SouthRIPLEY, WV866-372-1323the waves, pull them to the deepwater and let them drop, shakingthem all the while. When the lurehits the bottom we slow-roll it for afew feet, then rapidly crank it backto the boat to repeat the process. Ifthe wind is blowing across greenvegetation, we will fish this vegetationmuch the same as we fish awind-blown shore. We love to fish a rocky point thathas wind blowing over it. This isone of our favorite fishing places. We begin by positioning the boaton the lee side of the point. Fromthis position we toss lures into thewind and beyond the point, thenwe retrieve slowly over the point, expecting the bite as the lure entersthe deeper water on the lee side.A cardinal sin often committed bynovice fishermen is to fish the leeside of the lake when the wind isblowing. Our experience is this: On the leeside of the lake the bass will beinactive, while on the windwardshores the bass will be active.21 Country MarketLive Bait & Tackle* Minnows ~ Crawlers*Mealworms ~ Shiners* GAME CHECKING* HUNTING & FISHING LIC.Everything you need fora day on the water!372-9697Rt. 21 North Ripley, WVSPENCER'STAXIDERMY304-824-3745OVER 46 39 YEARSEXPERIENCEBIRDS, FISH, ANTLERSLIFE-SIZE MOUNTS, GAMEHEADSWEST HAMLIN,WVACCROSS FROM THE POST OFFICEFULL TIME TAXIDERMY SERVICEThe wind makes boating and fishingtougher, but the improved bitemakes it worthwhile. These words apply to fishing inlate-spring, summer, and early-fall,but it is vice-versa for the rest ofthe year. When the water is colder than 60degrees, the wind makes it evencolder, so the place to fish is wherethe water is sheltered, and it is evenbetter if the spot is fully exposed tosunshine.Donʼt let muddy water or windyconditions keep you off the water.• PONTOON• HOUSEBOATRENTALSSpend A Night On The Water304-765-2120BEE RUN DOCKSSlip RentalsOn The Water RestaurantLive Bait • GasolineJuly 2007 ~ Page 18PaddleboatCharters• Dinner & Parties50 PassengersLocated On Sutton Lake - Off I-79 Exit 67 Flatwoods, WVTurn Rt. & Go 1.2 Miles - Turn Left On Airport Road - 1.2 Miles

As Larry Nixon made last-minutepreparations to his gear before departingthe dock for the final roundof the Wal-Mart FLW Tour eventon Lake Norman in April, therewas something different about histackle. His Texas rigs were made up oftiny tungsten weights, held in placeby bobber stoppers. His hooks werestraight-shank, fine wire hooks, allmodified with a piece of heat-shrinktubing to create a barb to hold theworm in place. His shaky heads were a rare Japanesevariety, which are hard to acquirein the United States. The line, in which he entrusted allof his potential $150,000-winningfish, was Vanish fluorocarbon. The worms he put on the hookswere straight and skinny, hoppedup with potent smell and taste, thanks to Berkleyʼs latest Powerbaittechnology. One rod was even rigged withthe hottest lure going, a 6-inchBasstrix Paddle-tail tube, pairedwith a weighted hook.Nixonʼs blend of cutting-edgetackle looked like something youmight find in Luke Clausen or ShinFukaeʼs boat.Larryʼs LessonsAs I obsessively studied Nixonʼstackle, I wondered how this couldbe. After all, this was Larry Nixon.Where was the 8-inch ribbon-tailworm? Where was the 1/4-ouncelead bullet weight? Where was the15-pound-test monofilament? Andwhy was he not pegging his weightwith a toothpick? What in the worldhappened to the old-school Nixon?Later that afternoon, as the 56-year-old pro held up the Lake NormanFLW Tour winnerʼs check, his17th national title over a 30-yearpro fishing career, it dawned onme that one of the keys to Nixonʼstimeless success has been his ongoingeffort to embrace new tackle, techniques and technology in bassfishing.continue to the next pageATVʼsMotorcyclesRt. 33 EastBuckhannon, WV304-472-4824www.supersmittys.comKenny Ray brought in a couple ofnice New River smallmouth. How doeshe manage to define and refine thenew techniques that he considerskeepers?Recently I had the opportunityto find answers to a few of thesequestions when the legendary prograciously allowed me in his boatfor a day of practice just before theWal-Mart Open on Beaver Lake.“Updated versions of old techniques”Upon starting the fishing day, Nixonwasted little time in getting rightto the topic of keeping up with bassfishingʼs fast-paced changes.“Part of the job requirement of beinga professional angler is keepingup with the improvements and innovationsin our sport,” he began.T&T Gun ShopJolynne Addition(off the Tallmansville Road)Buckhannon, WVGuns • Ammo •AccessoriesTURKEY HUNTING SUPPLIES4-8 Tu&Th12-6 SatLocated on Rt. 220UPPER TRACT, WV304-358-7321472-AMMOON THE 5 - LANEELKINS, WVTROUTFISHINGSUPPLIES“There is so much stuff comingdown the pike these days that hasto be evaluated” it makes tacklemanagement a real challenge.“Itʼs such a fine line to walk,”theChevy pro continued. “If youʼrehard-headed and ignore these newinnovations and improvements inthe name of simplicity - which isvery tempting - youʼll get bowledover in the check line by anglerswho understand them. For that reason, each and everynew lure, innovation or technologicaladvancement must pass a stringentevaluation process before itearns a spot in Nixonʼs tackle box. From tungsten weights to fluorocarbon, from ChatterBaits toswimbaits, from bobber stoppers toweighted hooks, Nixon takes timeto fully understand them beforeemploying them in battle.“During tournament hours, youwill not find a lure in my boat that Idonʼt completely understand, backwardsand forwards. I simply willnot take up space in my boat withlures I donʼt understand, becausethey can be a terrible distraction.”Exactly how something finds itsway into Nixonʼs tackle box is acomplex process.“Itʼs all about having a bettermousetrap,ʼ he offered. ʻSo manyof the new techniques we see thesedays are actually updated versionsof older lures or techniques. In orderfor a new lure to find its wayinto my boat, it usually has to replacean old one.”“I still chuckle when I hear someonerefer to a shaky head as a newtechnique. I won a national tournamenton a shaky head in 1981.Granted, there have been a lot ofrefinements since then - bettermolds, better hooks, better line -Christy’s Trading Post/Fat Eddie’sLocated At Summersville Lake - Near Battle Run RampLive Bait • Beer • Ice • Boating & Camping SuppliesWater Toys • Groceries & More!2243 Summersville Lake Rd.304-872-9101Bob & Christy Allman - Ownersbut itʼs still the same concept. Soas an example, my Japanese shakyheads with light wire hooks havereplaced my antiquated crude ballheads with inferior hooks.“Thatʼs one of the keys to tacklemanagement for me: When I putthe new something in, the oldsomething comes out. I donʼt putall the new shaky heads in therewith the old ones - itʼs either one orthe other.”How Nixon actually discoversnew lures is based on a very uniquefriendship. “With a sinking stickbait, youʼretalking about a lure that can befished nearly all year, in a variety ofwater clarities for a variety of species. In other words, itʼs not confinedto a narrow window of useeither by season or type of coverbeing fished. To me, thatʼs a moretimeless lure. And in my fishinghistory, Iʼve always favored timelesslures over situational lures.Look at my winning history andyouʼll see that timeless lures likeTexas-rigged worms and jigs aremy strengths.”Once Nixon has two or three newlures or products that pass the pooltest, then he is anxious to presentthem to the real quarry: Mr. Bass. When he is ʻfun fishingʼaroundhome, heʼll test drive productshe is most curious about. Also, acouple of times of year, Nixon andlongtime friend and fellow competitorGeorge Cochran head downto ponds in southern Arkansas forsome R&D with new items. No matter what the innovation is -lure, line, weight, etc. - as he catchesbass on it, Nixon begins to gradethe lure with three primary criteria:Does it garner more strikes? Doesit help eliminate loss of fish? Andhow time-consuming is the maintenanceof the product?“Itʼs all about efficiency, simpleas that,” Nixon declared. “I wantto get more strikes; I want to landmore of my fish; and I donʼt wantFamily Fishing and Camping4 LakesHybrid Striped BassRt. 50Between Bridgeport & Grafton304-265-1000to spend a whole lot of time foolingaround with a lure to rig it or makeit run right in the heat of battle.”With these critical aspects in mind,Nixon offers two examples of baitson his continuum of efficiency, starting with a shaky head.“How much more efficient does itget?” he questioned about the shakyhead. “You can fish it all year longon nearly any kind of fishery onany kind of cover for all species ofbass. it is slow and it is known for numbersrather than quality.” At theother end of the spectrum, Nixonreturns to the topwater toads.“Thereʼs no doubt, topwater toadsare fun baits to fish - the spectacularstrikes they provoke are phenomenal,”he explained. “But from myperspective, their inherent problemis hookup ratio and having to battlefish through thick cover to get themin the boat. The bass has more of anadvantage with that technique, andIʼm not real comfortable with that, especially if there is a more efficienttechnique available, maybelike Texas-rigging in open water.”Again, Nixon reiterates that he ismore interested in new lures andinnovations that promise improvementsto ʻuniversalʼtechniquesrather than improvements to ʻsituationalʼtechniques. With that in mind, here are Nixonʼsthoughts and opinions on some ofbass fishingʼs recent hot trends onthe FLW Tour:ChatterBait: “Most new lures ortechniques are improved or refinedversions of an old technique, butevery now and then we get one thatcreates its own category, and thatʼsGUNSMITHHot Bluing • Creakote • Trigger Jobs • Muzzle BreaksGeneral Repair • Custom Guns Built • Full Machine ShopObsolete Parts Made - 28 Years ExperienceFirearms & Bows Ordered 10% Over CostCustomers Needing Repairs - Call For Shipping InstructionsMOUNTAINSTATE MACHINE & GUN5173 Moore Rd. - Lavalette, WV - 304-523-5455WANTED: OLD FISHING LURESMADEBEFORE1960a ChatterBait: Itʼs not a jig; itʼs not acrankbait; itʼs not a spinnerbait; yetit can almost be any one of those, depending on how and where itʼsfished. Hehired a guide,to teach him.The guides advice was, “The bestway to learn how to fish deep inclear water is to fish at night, usinga black-light and fluorescent line.”“There are two keys to successfuldeep-water fishing.” Key one:watch for line movement. Keytwo: sense what is happening to thebait. At night 6-pound test fluorescentline looks like a rope when viewedwith a black-light.Watch the line while feeling everythingthat is going on with yourhands. A line that goes slack ortwitches on the fall may be the onlysignal of a bite.A slight variation in the feel orrhythm of the bait can also meana bite.Next, and still at night, and stillusing fluorescent line and a nightlight, fishing with spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Texas-rigged worms. He taught him to feel the rhythmof a deep, slow-rolling spinnerbaitand a deep running crankbait.Often baits can be inhaled, thenexhaled with the only indicationbeing a momentary interruption ofrhythm. And when fishing on the bottomwith plastic, the bite will either bea heavy feel or line movement. Seldomdo you actually feel a fish. The trick is to mentally visualizewhat the bait is doing and set thehook when something is different.Try to sense a “I just hung up on adish-rag feel.”www.wvasportsman.netHillbilly Hunting BeaglesAKC Pups & Hunting DogsComplete Line of Dog SuppliesDiamond Deluxe, Regal, Easy Loader & Summer BoxesDavid Dewees (304) 988-3137 Curt Casto (304) 988-04822178 Fishers Ridge, Kenna, WV 25248Danny Graham, from Woodsfield,Ohio, caught a 29” saugeye on theOhio River.GAME BIRDS FOR SALEA.I.
