Pneumonia StudyPrepared for Pneumonia Awareness WeekProudly supported by bioCSL

1Methodology

MethodologyThis study was conducted online among a representative sample of Australians aged 18 years and older. The sample was 609 respondents identified as ‘at risk’ of contracting pneumonia. The criteria for being‘at risk’ was;Aged 65 years and olderA smokerDiagnosed with a chronic lung, heart or kidney diseaseDiagnosed with Type 2 DiabetesSuffer impaired immunityOnly those respondents that met one or more of these conditions completed the survey. Theserespondents were distributed throughout Australia including both capital city and non-capital city areas.Galaxy Research designed the questionnaire, a copy of which has been included in this report. The questionnaire was transferred into Quest format in order to be hosted online. For each question therespondent had to click on the response which represented their answer.Fieldwork commenced on Wednesday 27 March and was completed on Saturday 30 March, 2013.Following the completion of interviewing, the data was weighted by age, gender and region to reflect thelatest population estimates.3

2Main Findings

Main Findings ...continuedo Most Australians at risk of pneumonia believe the best protection from pneumonia is to take sensibleprecautions. These include being healthy and exercising (25%), staying warm and avoiding the cold(14%) and avoiding contact with sick people (13%).o It is very much the minority, 18%, that understand vaccination is the best way to protect yourself frompneumonia.o Only 29% of at risk Australians have been vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia. While 43% ofthose aged 65 years and older have received the vaccine, the majority of these older Australians havenot.o These at risk Australians are more likely to have had the flu vaccine (51%) than the pneumococcalpneumonia vaccine.o Most of those vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia were aged 60 years or older when theyreceived the vaccine.o Only 37% of those vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia have had the second boosterinjection. Those aged 65 years or older (45%) or else diagnosed with a chronic condition (48%) aremore likely to have had the second injection.6

Main Findings ...continuedo Of those who have not had the booster injection, the most common reason is that the first injectionwas less than 5 years ago (55%).o As many as 27% say the reason for not having the second injection is because their doctor has notrecommended it and 11% do not know anything about the booster injection or why it might benecessary. This indicates that there is a need to educate not only the general public but also doctorsof the benefits of receiving the second injection.o Most of those who have not been re-vaccinated (61%) intend to do so in the future.o Key reasons for not having had the first pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination are similar to thereasons for not being re-vaccinated. Even among this high risk group, most are either not aware itexists (37%) or their doctor has not recommended it (31%). This result again highlights the need toeducate both doctors and the general public about the vaccination.o The importance of education is further emphasised in the finding that only 20% of those who have notbeen vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia intend to do so in the future.7
