The commencement ceremony for the <strong>Minooka</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>High</strong> School Class <strong>of</strong> <strong>2011</strong> was held in the<br />
MCHS - Central Campus Athletic Stadium on Sunday,<br />
May 22, <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
Andrew Moorman, son <strong>of</strong> Robert and Jody Moorman<br />
<strong>of</strong> Channahon, was named <strong>class</strong> co-valedictorian, Kelly<br />
Turner, daughter <strong>of</strong> Mark and Donna Turner <strong>of</strong> Channahon,<br />
was named <strong>class</strong> co-valedictorian, and Allison Turner,<br />
also daughter <strong>of</strong> Mark and Donna Turner <strong>of</strong> Channahon,<br />
was named <strong>class</strong> salutatorian. Both co-valedictorians<br />
and the salutatorian addressed their <strong>class</strong>mates with<br />
prepared speeches that reflected on the past four years,<br />
and that overflowed with anticipation <strong>of</strong> the years to<br />

Andrew has also earned the following awards and recognition:<br />
Regional & State Awards/Placement in Math Team, six-time<br />
ICTM Regional Competition winner, Rube Goldberg local 1st<br />
place winner, Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award<br />
from Rochester University winner, AP Scholar, Honor Roll (four<br />
years), Illinois State Scholar, and a selection into Who’s Who<br />
Among American <strong>High</strong> School Students. He is also a four-year<br />
participant in the Appalachian Service Project and a volunteer<br />
with several service projects through <strong>Minooka</strong> United Methodist<br />
Church. In the fall, Andrew will attend Cornell University, where<br />
he will major in architecture.<br />

Society (two years), Pit Orchestra (three years), Symphonic Band<br />
(one year), Concert Band (one year), Marching Band (four years,<br />
trumpet section leader), Pep Band (four years), Madrigal Brass<br />
(two years), Wind Ensemble (two years), Math Team (one year),<br />
Spanish National Honor Society (two years), Cheerleading (one<br />
year), Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (one year),<br />
and Grundy County Corn Festival representative (one year). Kelly<br />
has also earned the following awards and recognition: two-time<br />
Southwest Prairie Conference Honor Band selection, Fox Valley<br />
Music Festival Honor Band selection, Illinois State Scholar, AP<br />
Scholar, University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota – Gold National Scholarship,<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota – Study Abroad Freshman Scholarship,<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota – Presidential Scholarship, and University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Minnesota – College <strong>of</strong> Food, Agriculture & Natural Resource<br />
Sciences Scholarship. Kelly also volunteers at <strong>Minooka</strong> Animal<br />
Hospital and is an adoption counselor for the Humane Society. In<br />
the fall, Kelly will attend the University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota and major<br />
in animal sciences. She also plans to participate in band, dairy<br />
challenge team, dairy club, pre-veterinarian house/community,<br />
and the University’s honors program.<br />
Salutatorian Allison Turner is the daughter <strong>of</strong> Mark and Donna<br />
Turner <strong>of</strong> Channahon. During her high school career, Allison has<br />
participated in the following school activities: Concert Band (one<br />
year), Marching Band (four years, flute section leader), Pep Band<br />
(four years), Pit Orchestra (three years), Symphonic Band (one<br />
year), Wind Ensemble (one year), Grundy County Corn Festival<br />
representative (one year), Math Team (one year), National Honor<br />
Society (two years, one as <strong>Community</strong> Relations Officer), Spanish<br />
National Honor Society (two years, one as <strong>Community</strong> Relations<br />
Officer), Cheerleading (one year), and Worldwide Youth in<br />
Science and Engineering (one year). Allison has also earned the<br />
following awards and recognition: National Merit Scholarship<br />
Program Commended Scholar, Purdue University Presidential<br />
Scholar, Illinois State Scholar, AP Scholar, Fox Valley Music<br />
Festival Honor Band selection, and Southwest Prairie Conference<br />
Honor Band selection. Allison is also a volunteer in the Provena<br />
St. Joseph Medical Center pharmacy. In the fall, Allison will<br />
attend Purdue University, where she will major in pre-pharmacy.<br />
She also plans to participate in concert band, pharmacy student<br />
organizations, and various volunteer groups.<br />

The <strong>Minooka</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>High</strong> School District #111<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> Education recognized four outgoing members<br />
who collectively provided thirty-seven years <strong>of</strong> service<br />
to the district. Three members, Larry Larson (24 years<br />
<strong>of</strong> service), Bruce Miller (9 years <strong>of</strong> service), and A.J.<br />
Rossi (2 years <strong>of</strong> service) did not run for re-election in<br />
the Spring <strong>2011</strong> election, and Chris Balkema (2 years <strong>of</strong><br />
service) stepped down after being elected to the Grundy<br />
County Board in the Fall 2010 election.<br />
“Board <strong>of</strong> Education members give so much <strong>of</strong> their<br />
time and talent to make a difference in the education<br />
<strong>of</strong> all students, while acting in the best interests <strong>of</strong><br />
the community,” <strong>of</strong>fered Superintendent Dr. David<br />
Middleton. “Our entire district is grateful to them.”<br />
Relay Team Wins State Title<br />
The MCHS Indians had a strong showing at the<br />
<strong>2011</strong> IHSA Boys’ State Track and Field Championships<br />
at Eastern Illinois University on May 26-28. In the end,<br />
the 3,200-meter relay team <strong>of</strong> senior Danny Bahret,<br />
sophomore Joey Santillo, junior Dan Popek, and senior<br />
Joe McAsey captured a state title, while McAsey also<br />
finished third overall in the 800-meter run, and senior<br />
Kevin Dorenkamper placed fourth overall in the<br />
300-meter hurdles.<br />

Journalism Team Members Earn<br />
All-State Honors<br />
The MCHS Journalism Team performed well at the IHSA State Journalism<br />
Competition on Friday, May 6. Jessica Vicini (second from left) and Ali<br />
Kunke (third from left) earned All-State honors.<br />
On Friday, May 6, the <strong>Minooka</strong> Journalism Team<br />
had two students earn All-State honors at the IHSA State<br />
Competition at Eastern Illinois University. More than 70<br />
teams competed at state this year.<br />
Jessica Vicini, junior, won the Yearbook Layout<br />
Design Double-Page Spread competition. This was the<br />
best <strong>Minooka</strong> has ever finished in this event, and only the<br />
second journalism state champion in school history. Last<br />
year, she was third at state in the same event. Jessica is a<br />
managing editor for the school yearbook.<br />
Ali Kunke, sophomore, finished third in Yearbook<br />
Copy Writing. Ali is an academics section editor for the<br />
school yearbook.<br />
The previous week, <strong>Minooka</strong> finished fifth as a team<br />
at the Sectional Competition at Peoria Richwoods <strong>High</strong><br />
School.<br />
At the Sectional, Jessica won her event and Ali was<br />
second. Also qualifying for state at the Sectional were<br />
senior Soozie Bahret (second place, Infographics); junior<br />
Hayley Younce (second place, Copy Editing); sophomore<br />
Elaina Bartoli (second place, Newspaper Design); juniors<br />
Holli Kirsch and Taylor Troutman (second place, Yearbook<br />
Theme Development); and sophomore Dutch Nave (third<br />
place, Headline Writing).<br />
The MCHS Journalism Team is sponsored by Ms.<br />

Fishing Team Headed to State<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the MCHS Anglers Club (left to right) Dan Scott, Mike<br />
Maida, Jake Bryce, and Ted Mazur qualified for the <strong>2011</strong> IHSA State<br />
Bass Fishing Tournament, which will take place in June at Carlyle<br />
Lake. Coaches Dan Harris and Stan Tischer will lead the group in the<br />

Eleven Indians to Continue<br />
Athletic Careers at College<br />
The athletic and academic accomplishments <strong>of</strong> eleven<br />
<strong>Minooka</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>High</strong> School student-athletes were<br />
celebrated as part <strong>of</strong> the annual Spring Athletic Signing<br />
Ceremony hosted by the MCHS Athletic Department on<br />
Wednesday, May 4.<br />
Student-athletes recognized included: Daniel Bahret -<br />
University <strong>of</strong> St. Francis (Cross Country/Track), Mitchell<br />
Brozovich - Minnesota State Mankato (Football), Zachary<br />
Colvin - Bowling Green State University (Football),<br />

“<strong>Minooka</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>High</strong> School is extremely<br />

Tyrell. “Very few high school athletes have an opportunity<br />
to continue their careers at the collegiate level on<br />
scholarship. Their hard work, as well as the support they<br />
have received from their parents, coaches, and teammates,<br />
is to be commended.”<br />

Falvey Earns Repeat Bid<br />
to State Tennis Tournament<br />
Congratulations are extended to<br />
senior Brian Falvey for qualifying for the<br />
<strong>2011</strong> IHSA State Tennis Championships<br />
for the second consecutive year. Falvey,<br />
who is also a two-time Southwest Prairie<br />
Conference boys tennis champion, is now<br />
the first two-time state qualifier in school<br />
