Working it out is a highly complex calculation – but it’s notone that drivers with genuine talent have to make. Their skill, experience and intuition mean they get it right instinctively.A similar principle applies to the design of BMW Performance aerodynamic components. One look is enough to convince you of the BMW designers’ability, experience, and instinctive feel for the perfect line.45

BUCKING THE TREND, YET STILL GOINGWITH THE FLOW.BMW designers aren’t interested in swimmingwith the currents of fashion. The only fl ow thatthey’re interested in is airfl ow – of the kind theycan observe in countless hours of wind-tunneltesting.This is why they considered developing theBMW Performance aerodynamic kit such anexciting challenge. It was the ideal opportunityfor them to concentrate on fusing impressivefunctionality with striking design. One of theirmajor sources of inspiration here was thestripped-down look of the BMW World Touringcars.So the surfaces of the front aprons and the frontsplitters are sculpted in such a way as to deliveroutstanding aerodynamic performance.The result is not just a feast for the eyes; it’salso a joy to drive, with improved aerodynamicbalance and reduced lift helping to improvethe car’s handling.67

THRILLING ACCELERATION –AMAZING BRAKING.The greater the power at your disposal, thegreater the importance of control. So it’s not justhow fast a car can go from to km/h thatmatters, but also how fast it can go from to. The BMW Performance braking system isspecifi cally designed to handle the rigorousdemands imposed upon it by sports-styledriving.At the heart of the system are the aluminium sixpistonfi xed calipers and ventilated, cross-drilledbrake discs on the front axle. The design ofthese elements refl ects their sporting origins,and the light weight of the system reduces theunsprung mass of the car, and so improvesdriving dynamics.The BMW Performance braking system alsoperforms particularly well in the wet – thegrooves and holes in the discs prevent a fi lm ofwater from forming between brake disc andbrake pad.The system makes an equally dramatic visualimpact; the front-axle brake calipers featureBMW Performance lettering and are painted inBMW Performance Yellow.1415

WHEELS THAT WILL HAVE YOU DRIVINGTHE LIGHT FANTASTIC.If you’re a runner, then you’ll know the feeling:you fi nd a pair of trainers that fi ts you just right,and suddenly it’s like your heels have sproutedwings. And as shoes are to a runner, so wheelsare to a car – they are what connect it to theroad, completing both the look and the feel ofthe whole.BMW Performance alloy wheels successfullycombine minimalist sports-style design withremarkably low weight. In fact, they set wholenew standards in lightweight aluminium wheelconstruction using low-pressure casting.The reason that they weigh so little lies in thediameter of the spokes, which is incredibly lowfor cast wheels, and in the cut-away design ofthe join between spokes and rim – somethingthat up till now was only possible with forgedwheels. This allows more air to get to the BMWPerformance brakes, ensuring they work withmaximum effi ciency even at high temperatures.Both the -inch wheels for the BMW Seriesand the -inch wheels for the BMW Seriesare in the largest sizes approved by BMW foruse on the model in question.1617

NOW EVEN THE TIGHTEST CORNER LEADSSTRAIGHT TO DRIVING HEAVEN.Brake late. Change down quickly. Hit the apex. And accelerate away. Cornering at speed requires absolute concentration from the driver, and absoluteprecision from the chassis.To deliver this precision, the chassis components must be specifi cally designed for the high stresses placed on them by track-style driving – by designerswith a passion for exploring the precise limits of a car’s handling.1819

SUSPENSION THAT REQUIRES A SUSPENSIONOF DISBELIEF.BMW Performance chassis components arethe result of the BMW designers’ experience,expertise, and attention to detail – but above all,they are born out of a passion for high-precisionhandling, dynamic responses, and an utterlyinvigorating driving experience.The BMW Performance chassis ensures thispassion is transmitted directly to the driver.Ultra-stiff springs, shock absorbers and swaybars are all set up to work perfectly together onthe track, and deliver a pure sports-car ride. Inaddition, the suspension is also lowered by upto millimetres, depending on the model.Lowering the centre of gravity results in a higherlevel of responsiveness that will thrill all whoexperience it.All components are rigorously tested underthe toughest conditions imaginable, and thedata from these tests is then used to furtheroptimize the design. During this testing, theemphasis is on the vehicle’s driving dynamics,roadholding, ride, and steering responses onturn-in.BMW carries out this testing at three differentlocations. Initial testing takes place at theAschheim facility in Munich, and in Miramasin the South of France. Both venues simulateextreme driving conditions above and beyondwhat the vehicle would endure on an everydaybasis – including twisting corners, coursesdesigned to test the vehicle’s handling, skidpans, and much more besides.The ultimate test, however, is a fl ying lap of theinfamous Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring.Any car that can successfully master all itstreacherous corners, variable surfaces and theextreme G-forces of the Carousel is guaranteedto handle anything the road can throw at it withease.The comprehensive testing process ensures anunforgettable driving experience, on the longestof straights and through the tightest of cornersalike.2021

CARBON –THE HARMONY OF OPPOSITES.One of the highlights of the BMW Performancerange is the BMW Performance suspensioncross-brace. This component is made fromcarbon fi bre-reinforced plastic – or carbon forshort.The uniqueness of this material lies in the waythat it brings together two seemingly contradictoryattributes: it is incredibly light, and yet at the sametime, extremely rigid. It is this combination whichhas made carbon absolutely essential to modernracing-car design, and which made it the naturalchoice of material for the BMW Performancesuspension cross-brace.The suspension cross-brace connects the twofront suspension strut towers, thereby furtherstiffening the front of the car. This reducestorsional movement of the bodywork whencornering, and so increases the precision ofsteering responses. They are constantly striving to fi nd the technicaladvances to roll back these boundaries, and explore previously uncharted territory.The BMW Performance power kits are a prime example of such an advance, further enhancing your vehicle’s already impressive engine output. They feature acombination of software and hardware components that work together as a package. The engine tuning parameters have been modifi ed to enhance output.However, this generates extra heat, and so modifi cations are also needed to deal with this. In the BMW i and BMW i, these include an additional radiatorand air intakes, and a more powerful fan.The effect that these changes have on the BMW i and BMW i can be seen in the graph above. The maximum torque of the six-cylinder in-line engine is increasedfrom to as much as Nm, depending on the type of transmission, and power output rises from to kW. This improves acceleration both from to km/h(by . seconds over models without the power kit) and from to km/h (by . seconds in fi fth gear).The BMW Performance power kit is also available for the BMW d and BMW d. As well as revised engine tuning parameters, this also includes a bigger intercoolerand a higher-performance fan. The result is an increase in maximum output from to kW, and in maximum torque from to Nm. The car now accelerates. seconds faster from to km/h, . seconds faster from to km/h in fourth gear, and . seconds faster from to km/h in fi fth gear. GIVE YOUR ENGINE MOREOF WHAT IT NEEDS.The engine of your BMW is eager to unleash itsfull power, but it can only do so if you give it roomto breathe. In other words, your engine needs air,as highly compressed and at as steady a rate aspossible. That way, the cylinders will be evenlyfi lled, and so will be able to produce more powerand more torque.The BMW Performance air intake systemensures that the engine is always provided withthe optimum amount of air. Special air pipesand fi lters make possible high throughput andminimize pressure loss. This creates a throatyintake note which can be enjoyed inside thecockpit, enriching the sports-car experience ofdriving your BMW.A section of the air intake cover is made of hightechcarbon, and carries the BMW Performancelettering. It may be hidden under the bonnet, butthe message it sends out couldn’t be clearer.2829

PERFORMANCEYOU CAN HEAR.The BMW Performance silencer system doesn’tjust give your car a distinctive sound, it alsomeasurably improves throttle response. Highthroughput reduces backpressure, so thatexhaust gases are channelled away from theengine faster, enabling it to function moreeffi ciently.The results are clear to see – and above all, hear.Even at low revs, the rich, deep engine noteclearly hints at the reserves of power available,and as you put your foot down, so your pulserate will leap upwards. The outer sign of theseinner qualities can be found at the rear of the car,in the shape of the twin tailpipes in chromeplatedstainless steel. Their stripped-down lookgives the vehicle a high-tech appeal.And as with all BMW Performance products,the use of the latest CAD and FEA technology,combined with strict internal quality assuranceprocesses, ensures long component life.The BMW Performance silencer system isavailable in two versions, one for six-cylinderpetrol engines and one for four-cylinder dieseland petrol units. Both versions were designedto optimize the performance characteristicsof the engine layout in question.3031

YOUR BMW, YOUR RULES.Climb in, and you’ll fi nd that the BMWPerformance sport seat fi ts you like a secondskin. Its highly distinctive shape was inspiredby the monocoque construction techniqueused in racing cars, and it combines outstandinglateral support when cornering at speed witha high level of comfort on long journeys.Upholstered in black Alcantara, and featuring abuilt-in side airbag, it is also adjustable betweentwo height settings. The BMW Performancelettering is a proud statement of its racing origins.The BMW Performance sport steering wheel Ilikewise breaks new ground. Completelyupholstered in Alcantara with white crossstitching,the curvature is fl attened at the loweredge. However, its most eye-catching featureis the display built into the top of the rim.Incorporating one organic and two conventionalLEDs, it gives drivers access to a variety ofeffi ciency and motorsport-related functions.*These are operated via buttons convenientlylocated in the thumb-rest areas. A choice ofthree modes is available – ECO, Sport andRace.In all three modes, the LEDs can be used toinform drivers of the optimum shift point. InECO mode, they can also help facilitate a moreeconomical driving style. Sport mode includesa stopwatch, a current fuel consumption display,and a g-meter showing and recording momentaryacceleration.Race mode incorporates a lap timer with varioussplit-time and memory functions. This too is completelycovered in Alcantara, ensuring optimum gripin any situation, and features a fl attened lowersection of the rim and white cross-stitchedseams. SHORT AND SWEET.Having the power is all well and good. But whatreally counts is being able to use it.The BMW Performance shift throw reductionmakes gearshift throw approximately per centshorter, allowing signifi cantly faster gear changes.Like all BMW Performance components, the shiftthrow reduction seamlessly combines form andfunction. It incorporates a gear lever knob with anergonomic, high-tech design that perfectly matchesthe handbrake grip.The aluminium footrest and pedals show that thisattention to detail also extends to the footwell.
