We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testamentswere given by the inspiration of God, and that theyonly constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitelyperfect, the Creator, preserver, and Governor of allthings, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.3. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divineand human natures are united, so that He is truly andproperly God and truly and properly man.5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state ofinnocency but by their disobedience they lost their purityand happiness, and that in consequence of their fall allmen have become sinners, totally depraved, and as suchare justly exposed to the wrath of God.THE DOCTRINES OF THE SALVATION ARMY96. Shared ministry the norm. Because of the great benefits of shared ministry over a lifetime of service, thenorm of officer marriages is that both spouses are officers. See paragraph 2 below for exceptions that mayapply in some territories.2. Exception—spouse moving towards officership. As an exception to the norm, an officer may marry a personwho is committed to moving towards commissioned officership, namely, an accepted candidate, auxiliarycaptainor, at territorial discretion, a cadet or cadet-lieutenant during their training period. In the event that itbecomes clear that the non-officer spouse will not become an officer, the officer must surrender his or her officershipat that point, unless excepted by the provision of paragraph 4 of Chapter 2 ‘Married Officers’Exception—spouse moving out of officership. Should a situation arise in which one spouse can no longerremain an officer, the remaining spouse may, in exceptional circumstances, and with the recommendation ofthe territorial officer review board, be allowed to continue as an officer. The recommendation of the officerreview board, together with that of the territorial commander, must be forwarded to IHQ for final decision by theChief of the Staff.Exception—one spouse an officer. In territories that have sought and been given special dispensation byIHQ, the TC may, in exceptional circumstances, and after considering the recommendation of the officerreview board, give permission for an officer to marry or to be married to a non-officer who is in sympathy withhis or her spouse’s vocation as an officer. Territories that have been granted special dispensation are exemptedfrom the requirement to refer cases under paragraph 3 above to IHQ.3. Information. Officers and accepted candidates, cadets, cadet-lieutenants and auxiliary-captains who arecontemplating engagement and marriage, are to keep their immediate leaders informed of their plans, includingthe break of an engagement should this occur.4. Counselling. It is recommended that engaged couples take advantage of the pre-marital counselling that willbe offered during the engagement period, and that both parties undergo medical examinations.5. Articles of marriage. Officers contemplating marriage should consider prayerfully the articles of marriage(see Salvation Army Ceremonies).6. Salvation Army wedding. The wedding of officers should be consistent with Christian discipleship and avoidinappropriate ostentation and excessive cost out of keeping with an officer’s vocation and vows. The wearingof appropriate uniform is expected, as it reflects the commitment and chosen life-style of officers. For further explanation please refer to O & R for Officers Volume 2, Part 5, Chapters 1-2.REGULATIONS RE: ADOPTION OF CHILDREN(O. & R. for Officers of The Salvation Army - Volume 2, Part 5, Chapter 5)(Date composed: 07/18/97 Date Modified: 12/08/2000)1.
