Wireless Monitoring of Industrial ValvesValvescan is a wireless, end-to-end solution for sensor networks used to monitorvarious types of valves, operating in process plants. Valvescan provides engineers inboth the control room and field with a comprehensive overview of valve performanceand status in a real time environment.Traditionally, the installed cost of standard valve monitoring systems has beenexpensive and cumbersome. In contrast, Valvescan is a wireless solution utilisingequipment that offers fast installation, easy operation and effective diagnostics forpreventative maintenance with significant cost savings. It is also compatible withcurrent conventional instrumentation, allowing for the development of newfunctionality in control and better plant accountability. The Valvescan wireless monitoring system is a unique and pioneering solutionthat will revolutionise plant operations.Enhanced Process ControlIndustrial valves are a key component inany process plant. Reduced manpower, increased legislation and continuing effortsto drive down costs has seen a need toincrease the levels of monitoring onactuated and manual valves in order toenhance production control, eliminateerrors in the process and improve thesafety of the process line. With thousands of new industrial valvesbeing installed yearly, Valvescan is a costeffective system for getting new plant up tofull capacity quickly. In addition, Valvescanis ideal for retrofitting to existing valveswhere traditional network solution wouldbe too costly or complex to install.

System DescriptionThe Valvescan wireless monitoring system consists of:Valve Devices (VD) - attached to anactuated or manual valve to monitor itsstatus and report wirelessly.A network of Valve Device Routers (VDR) -transfers the monitoring data from the VDson a wireless MESH network to theTunneling VDR.Tunneling VDR (TVDR) - Last hop VDRthat transfers collected data from the VDRsnetwork to the Gateway. Several TVDRs canbe connected via TCP/IP to the Gateway.Gateway - an industrial computer thatmanages the Valvescan system.Management System (EMS) - softwaremanagement tool that monitors and reportsabout the valves’ position and health status. The EMS provides data in common industrialstandard connections to the HMI, DCS andPLCs on site.Operator Device (OD) - handheld devicethat is used by the process line operatorfor setup and local data retrieval.Valve Device Router(VDR)Valve Device (VD)Operator Device(OD)
