Fall 2014 Schedule of Classes
South Bay Regional Adult Education ConsortiumThe CACE Story: Musings on Adult Educationwww.cace.cuhsd.orgThe cycle of the seasons mark the passage of time for all of us, and for many ofus the new year is also more attached to the school year than January 1 – Falland the beginning of school, the end of summer, time for getting down to business. The current “new” school year that this catalog of classes announces isalso a significant milestone for adult education in California and in our community.Through the economic recession of the last several years all public educationwas hit by destructive downsizing and diminished resources. Although publicadult education has supported California’s growth and prosperity for over 150years, in recent years there have been over one million fewer adults in local adultschools than were there in 2008. As our economy inches back, unevenly and indanger of leaving whole segments of our communities in unemployment and underemployment, school districts move from crisis mode to subsistence mode(California still rates near the bottom of all states in per-pupil spending). Now ourstate has embraced both curricular reform and fiscal restructuring. Schools arededicated to preparing high school students to think independently and critically,be able to compute and problem-solve, work in groups – in short to be ready forcollege and careers. Local school districts are charged to have more discretionover how to use the funding that comes from the state to achieve those goals –the local control funding formulae which mean more funding for some districts, but not all. In this atmosphere of reform and re-invention adult education is alsoasked to push the reset button. The legislature and our governor has asked bothlocal adult schools and community colleges to develop greater alignment andcollaboration to address the learning needs of adults in a region. Funding in futureyears will be dependent on the quality of this regional planning. In the wholestate there are seventy consortia which have formal status and are working todevelop regional plans for adult education: what are the gaps? What is theunique need of a region? How can all the providers align to serve students moreefficiently? What are the seamless career pathways for adults – whether an 18year old dropout, an immigrant, or an adult of any age seeking to reskill for workand life? Ourdistrict’s name, and the original high school located in what is now “downtown”Campbell, is an identity, a “brand”, we are happy to use. Campbell for many inour valley represents a healthy space, with strong families, quality schools, andpotential for a quality lifestyle. Campbell is a great goal for us at CACE – qualityof life for all our residents. The mission of Campbell Adult and Community Education is to advance our community’seconomic and workforce development and its quality of life goals byraising all forms of literacy and preparing adult learners for careers, college, andcivic responsibility.

Our district believes that quality public education is foundational to ahealthy community – and its adult education program is an important part ofthat service. We anticipate greater collaboration with other partners in ourregion, the South Bay Regional Consortium for Adult Education: Santa ClaraAdult School, Silicon Valley Adult Education, East Side Adult Education, MilpitasAdult School, San Jose City College, Evergreen Valley Community College,West Valley College, and Mission College. Our work together will produce aplan that we will present to state in December, 2014. That plan will focus onexpanding access to education for all our region’s adults to build a more capableworkforce, stronger families, and achieve greater social and economic justice. In short, to continue the traditional mission of public adult educationwith the tools and outcomes aligned to the 21st century in the Silicon Valley.Page 4
