Unfortunately, many times <strong>we</strong> never get past our initial impression.At MGH, <strong>we</strong> encounter a variety of people seeking <strong>healthcare</strong> services who aregenerally apprehensive about the results they will get from tests and procedures.They face health issues for themselves, family members and friends, or even lossof life. This means they have high anxiety and are scared and fearful of what thefuture holds. Often <strong>we</strong> see people at their worst, when they are emotionally andphysically worn down and <strong>we</strong>ary.Based on all of the information <strong>we</strong> must gather to treat our patients, <strong>we</strong> get toknow something about their situation in life. This information helps us get pastour initial impression of them and get to know them. Once <strong>we</strong> know more aboutthem, <strong>we</strong> can provide them with the caring and compassionate services they needbecause <strong>we</strong> know them. Our patient focus is the “whole” person, so <strong>we</strong> must knowpatients <strong>we</strong>ll to <strong>meet</strong> their <strong>needs</strong>.Such should be our focus in life. Whosaid you can’t work for the same organizationfor 45 years?MGH has two fantastic employees who have.Nurses Carolyn King and Marilyn Pearcy both startedat MGH in 1965. We do it so you have animmediate comfort when you walk through our doors—the assurancethat you will receive the best possible care from highly trained andaccredited staff, departments and facilities.Radiology Departments Earn Kudosfor Quality and Commitment<strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>’s PMi, MRI and CT departments<strong>we</strong>re recently accredited by the American College ofRadiology (ACR).The ACR, a national organization serving more than34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiationoncologists and medical physicists, accredits facilities forachieving high practice standards and assesses qualificationsof the personnel, adequacy of equipment, effectiveness ofquality control measures, and quality of clinical images.The accreditations recognize the professionalism ofradiologists and the staff’s commitment to providing thehighest level of quality patient care.Robin Heiny, RT(R)(CT)(MR), and Jennifer Klein,RT(R), played a pivotal role in the new accreditations.They worked many hours to compile and submit therequired documentation.MGH also was reaccredited for nuclear medicine andCT services. 2 3MGHMammographyPassesRigorousReview<strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>’s mammography departmenthas received accreditation for stereotactic biopsy fromthe American College of Radiology (ACR).The ACR’s stereotactic breast biopsy accreditationprogram provides facilities that perform stereotacticbreast biopsy procedures with peer review and constructivefeedback on their staff’s qualifications, equipment,quality control, quality assurance, accuracy ofneedle placement, image quality and dose.The voluntary accreditation follows an intensive andrigorous review process to be sure nationally acceptedstandards are met or exceeded.The accreditation reflects a positive light on the qualityof MGH equipment as <strong>we</strong>ll as staff and physicians whointerpret MGH mammography. 4 5MGH’s CardiacRehabilitationProgramC e r t i fi e d<strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>’s cardiac rehabilitation departmenthas been awarded program certification by the AmericanAssociation of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation(AACVPR).AACVPR is a national multidisciplinary association dedicatedto the improvement of clinical practice, promotion of scientificinquiry and advancement of education for the benefit of cardiovascularand pulmonary rehabilitation professionals and thepatients they serve. It is the only organization that certifiescardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs.Valid for three years, the certification is a symbolof <strong>meet</strong>ing essential standards for quality patientcare in cardiac rehabilitation.MGH’s cardiac rehabilitation, which began in 1987,has an average of 300 patient visits a month.Diabetes ProgramAwarded for HighStandards<strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>’s Outpatient Diabetes Self-ManagementEducation (DSME) Program was recently awarded continuedrecognition from the American Diabetes Association. With <strong>your</strong>help, a total of 4,576 surveys from GrantCounty residents <strong>we</strong>re completed.Members of every U.S. community havepatterns of behavior, function and choice thatcontribute to their state of health. To plan,design and deliver programs for health promotionand disease prevention, these patternsare assessed and evaluated by members of theHealthcare Community.During the fall 2008 semester, IndianaWesleyan University and Taylor University partneredwith <strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> to conducta communitywide health assessment for GrantCounty. The Community Outreach Departmentof <strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> developed the planand provided materials that <strong>we</strong>re used by nursingand social-work students to complete thehealth profiles.Student teams <strong>we</strong>re assigned to specific townships.They developed and carried out a plan forassessing their specific populations within thosegeographic locations. Using questionnaires, students<strong>we</strong>nt door-to-door, visited various communitysettings and telephoned county residents tocollect health assessment data.After inputting and evaluating the results,much data describing our community’s healthare now available. We wish them <strong>we</strong>ll.Also during the June board <strong>meet</strong>ing, <strong>we</strong> installedfour new board members: Susie Vermillion, JanetDavis, Karen Keys and Janice Hanes. We also installedour new officers for 2011–12: Phil Weck, president; RonTotten, vice president; Kathy Gray, secretary; MaryCraw, corresponding secretary; Norma Northway,treasurer; and Dorinda Turner, assistant secretary.We look forward to working together to fulfill the <strong>needs</strong>of the Auxiliary and hospital.The Auxiliary had a very good 2010–11. Fundraisersfor the year included uniform sales, a book sale, FudgieWudgie and South Bend chocolate sales, a luxury bedsheets sale, and a purse and wallet sale. Without thosewho supported us, <strong>we</strong> would not be able to do the things<strong>we</strong> do for <strong>Marion</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>.The Auxiliary was able to purchase new furniture forwaiting areas in the emergency room and 330 building.Patients, family and visitors are now more comfortablebecause of <strong>your</strong> generous support.We hope you will continue to stop by and purchaseitems at our fundraisers throughout the 2011–12 year.We would truly appreciate it!Volunteers of the MonthMarch: Jo Carlson—“Spend four very worthwhile hours helping others,” says Jo Carlson, a five-year volunteer.“It’s time <strong>we</strong>ll spent and very satisfying.” Carlson volunteers in the emergency room. Her primary job is makingER patients and their families as comfortable as possible. “I feel like I have accomplished something when I makesomeone more comfortable,” she says. The Hendricks County native enjoys gardening, golfing, bargain shoppingand coupon clipping.April: Margaret Jones—When asked why she likes to volunteer, Margaret Jones says, “I like contact with thepublic, and volunteering at MGH has been a very good experience.” Prior to volunteering at MGH, Jones workedat Thomson Consumer Electronics in <strong>Marion</strong>. Although born in Jeffersonville, Ind., she was raised in <strong>Marion</strong>. For thepast two years, she has provided information and direction for visitors at the information desk in the 330 building.May: Janet Davis—For slightly more than a year, Janet Davis has volunteered as a messenger and in the Auxiliarygift shop. “Volunteering is so fun and fulfilling,” she says. “Everyone is so friendly and helpful at MGH.” Davis alsovolunteers for cancer services and the Red Cross. Davis’ career prior to volunteering was in sales. Her hobbies includewalking, bicycling, motorcycling and gardening. She has three children and four grandchildren.June: Dee Dee Wiecking—Dee Dee Wiecking has lived in <strong>Marion</strong> her entire life, so it only made sense to volunteerat her hometown hospital. “I would recommend volunteering at MGH to anyone—you get maximum satisfaction forminimal effort,” she says. “Plus you get to work with exceptional staff in an award-winning hospital.” She and herhusband, Bud, have two daughters and two grandchildren.
