Working Together, Making a Difference

You may remember the old adage

the whole is greater than the sum of

its parts. This certainly holds true at

Theophany. Every member of our

family- our children, our families,

our teachers, our volunteers, our

board members, our donors- plays

a vital role in helping Theophany

thrive. It is only through the unique

contribution of each individual that

our full potential is achieved.

Who are some of these “parts” that

work together for the greater good

of Theophany School?

Daniel Gioffre, board member

for seven years and board chair

2009-2010, is a teacher at Bishop

Guertin High School where he

currently serves as chair of the

World Language Department.

Daniel faithfully drives down from

Nashua, NH where he lives with

his family to attend monthly board

meetings and countless committee

meetings and special events. Daniel

logs in over 1000 miles a year to

participate in board activities. When

asked why, Daniel highlights his

conviction that education, if it is

truly to encompass the whole

person, must be accomplished in a

prayerful, Orthodox environment.

Working Together, Making a Difference (continued from cover)

Mary Lou and Bill Catelli serve on

various Theophany committees. Mary

Lou, a retired Special Education teacher

with 35 years of experience, brings a

wealth of knowledge to our Education

Committee; her passion for education

and love of children is contagious.

Bill, a long-time supporter and board

member of the Boys and Girls Club

of Rhode Island, brings invaluable

expertise to Theophany’s Development

Committee, especially as we make final

preparations for our capital campaign

kickoff. When asked why they are so

committed to our school, Mary Lou

sums it up beautifully: “Theophany

School offers an opportunity for

children to live their life as an Orthodox

Christian joyfully and thoroughly

experiencing our faith.”

Theophany School alumni Anastasia

and Athanasia Kourtis, Timothy

Markatos, Caroline Saba, and Victoria

Sayeg (to name a few) are all regulars

at Sonia’s Run, helping out by selling

hot dogs and sodas, painting faces,

volunteering on the course or running/

walking the run. Co-founders Nick and

Jane Kourtis along with other past and

present teachers and board members

have combined to make the annual

event a huge success.

Parents Kara Yeomans, Toni Ann

Simmons, and Elizabeth MacNeil

recently ran our first-ever Christmas

Cookie Tray in-house fundraiser. Kara

explains, “I was inspired by all of the

delicious homemade pastries at our

annual benefit evening and how popular

they were. When it came time to

brainstorm about fresh ideas for an inhouse

fundraiser, the Cookie Tray idea

seemed a perfect fit for our parents to

come together and support the school.”

Through the efforts of all who baked,

sold, and bought cookies, $800 was

raised for our program.

Last year, Myrna Jreige collected $100

from her classmates at Newton Country

Day School. On Fridays, students at the

school are allowed to wear jeans if they

contribute a dollar to be donated to a

particular cause, and Myrna suggested

Theophany School.

Musician Phil Ayoub has repeatedly

entertained us all at our Annual

Fundraising Event. Producer/Director

Constantine Nasr, a friend of many

members of the Theophany School

family, has donated numerous

Hollywood items to help make our

auction both exciting and successful.

The whole is indeed greater than

the sum of its parts. At Theophany

School, this is more than a tired cliché:

it is a statement about the powerful

connections between students, teachers,

trustees, and benefactors, extending

across great distances and between

generations, that makes Theophany

more than just a school. We here at

Theophany are truly thankful for all of

your contributions.
