Assessment Program. <strong>The</strong> two,<br />

six-plus acre <strong>Green</strong> spaces include<br />

various community, health and environmentally<br />

centered features. <strong>The</strong>re is an<br />

exercise track, nature hiking trails, a field<br />

house, a multipurpose field for community<br />

sports and play, a pedestrian bridge over<br />

the scenic <strong>Blackstone</strong> River to the island<br />

park, and a canoe launch for weekend trips<br />

on the river.<br />

CUMBERLAND<br />

DIAMOND HILL PARK<br />

Named for its mile-long face of mica,<br />

Diamond Hill is another great place to do<br />

some jogging or hiking, have a picnic and<br />

enjoy a free concert. <strong>The</strong> town sponsors<br />

the free Summer Concert Series in July<br />

and August. Climb to the summit and you<br />

can see for miles. Once you’ve gotten to<br />

the top of the former ski slopes (the<br />

smaller hill on the left is a much easier<br />

hike), there are walking trails from which<br />

you can see the Diamond Hill Reservoir<br />

to the east and Woonsocket and beyond<br />

to the west. <strong>The</strong>re are picnic sites<br />

throughout. <strong>The</strong> pond is a favorite of kids<br />

looking for frogs and tadpoles. Bathroom<br />

facilities are open only during special<br />

events and for large gatherings that have<br />

received a permit.<br />

Former Cistercian Monastery is owned<br />

by the Town of Cumberland and used as<br />

a recreation area and home of Cumberland’s<br />

Edward J. Hayden Public Library.<br />

VALLEY FALLS HERITAGE PARK<br />

Broad Street at Mill Street<br />

Educational park built on ruins of <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Valley</strong> Falls Company Mill. Interpretive<br />

displays explain how the <strong>Blackstone</strong> River<br />

was harnessed to power factories and<br />

the growth of the <strong>Valley</strong> Falls Mills and<br />

village. Open dawn to dusk.<br />

GLOCESTER<br />

This area, of nearly 112 acres, is dotted<br />

with streams and ponds. <strong>The</strong> area is a<br />

noted birding spot, including the Blackthroated<br />

Blue Warbler, long thought to<br />

be extinct in Rhode Island.<br />
