india | MoU signed to establish indian Maritime University Scomi Marine Bhd entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Maritime University (IMU), Intan Asia Sdn Bhd (IASB) and Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) on 7 December 2010 in New Delhi. The MoU was to establish a framework of cooperation between the four parties for the provision of maritime academic programmes like training, research, consultancy courses and services in Malaysia at a campus to be established in PKFZ. As provided under the MoU, the parties will undertake the establishment of the maritime academy, with a joint management committee and a joint academic committee formed to carry out the planning, direction and overall management of the project and the academic curriculum respectively. PKFZ was identified as the ideal location for setting up the IMU Asia Campus as it offers excellent connectivity and infrastructure facilities. Signing on behalf of Scomi Marine was Kanesan Veluppillai, President of Scomi International. In conjunction with the signing, the Malaysian delegation paid a courtesy visit to Union Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan and Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, K. Mohandas. They were accompanied by the Malaysian High Commissioner H.E. Dato’ Tan Seng Sung. IMU is a Central University established by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India under an Act of Indian Parliament 2008, with its headquarters in Chennai, India. Meanwhile, IASB is a private limited company established and existing under the laws of Malaysia, engaging in the business of general trading services, transportation and management. Similarly, PKFZ is established under the laws of Malaysia and is an integrated 1,000-acre Free Commercial and Industrial Zone providing facilities for international cargo distribution and a consolidation centre. PKFZ is situated in Port Klang, Malaysia and was the world’s 15th ranked port in 2009 in terms of throughput volume. Gazetted as a Free Zone, PKFZ incorporates both commercial and manufacturing activities that are further supported by quality and valueadded services. Speaking on the partnership, Shah Hakim Zain, Group CEO of Scomi Group commented, “The establishment of IMU Asia Campus will form a part of Scomi’s corporate social responsibility initiatives in the country. Our intention is to train young Malaysians for a career in the shipping industry. In addition, this will also help alleviate the unemployment problem faced by youths. This is a privileged opportunity for Scomi to contribute to the Malaysian education system by providing an academy for our students to choose from with exciting new courses.” The campus also provides PKFZ with another nucleus of activity for the free trade zone and will spawn a series of activities to support the shipping and logistics requirement of the industry. The project will be able to utilise the existing built-up facilities in the four blocks of office complexes in PKFZ immediately. The Indian Maritime University Asia Campus once established will conduct various courses such as Diploma in Nautical Studies as well as Degree courses in Nautical Studies, Nautical Science, Shipbuilding and Repair, Maritime Science, Maritime Engineering and Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering. It will also offer Masters (MBA) courses in Shipping and Port Management, a collaboration with Netherlands Maritime University and a Masters (LLM) in Maritime Law, a collaboration with National Law School, India and Maritime Law Institute, Malta. Cutout of monorail body structure displayed at InnoTrans Berlin 2010 It was a big moment for Scomi Rail when we partnered with Alcan Extrusions to showcase an actual cutout of the Mumbai Monorail Aluminium Body Structure at Alcan’s booth at InnoTrans 2010 held in Berlin from 21-24 September. We participated in InnoTrans 2010 not only to promote the SUTRA monorail on an international platform but also to gain technical knowledge about the railway industry in general. It was also a wonderful opportunity to learn first hand what the world’s best manufacturers were developing. The Mumbai Monorail Aluminium Body Structure Extrusion was a hit with visitors and generated much public interest about Scomi Rail’s capabilities in manufacturing an internationally recognised monorail product. Besides the InnoTrans exhibition, we also attended the Monorail Seminar organised by the International Monorail Association (IMA) on 22 September to discuss and debate monorail related issues. As Scomi’s representatives, we presented a status update of the Mumbai Monorail project. During the four-day exhibition, we also visited exhibition booths by many existing Mumbai Monorail Project suppliers and potential suppliers for future projects. Even though InnoTrans fully focused on traditional railways - two steel wheels on two steel rails, there were many other concepts and technologies presented that could be applied to monorails for weight and cost reduction. InnoTrans 2010 is the biggest International Trade Fair for Transport Technology with more than 2,200 exhibitors from around the world. Attended by more than 100,000 trade visitors, this annual event has been established as an international industry showplace focusing on Railway Technology and has become an international platform for buyers and sellers of passenger and freight transport technology. InnoTrans features a full range of rail vehicles on static displays at the Messe Berlin (Berlin Exhibition Centre) tracks located outside the exhibition halls. Other key InnoTrans exhibits included Railway Infrastructure, Interiors, Public Transport and Tunnel Construction.
