Juan Montoya to be honored 

as Design Icon by World 

Market Center Las Vegas 

International design luminary Juan Montoya is being honored with one of f 

the industry’s highest designations — World Market Center Las Vegas: 

Design Icon. For years Montoya has been an icon by reputation, and 

WMCLV is now making the designation offi cial for one of the top 

designers in the U.S. 

LAS VEGAS MARKET INSIDER WINTER 2010 I 

“I feel very honored and very appreciative and humbled by this award,” ” 

says Montoya. “It means that people appreciate the work I have done, and that I have 

been doing my job the best way I can do it.” 

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, South 

America, Montoya studied at Universidad 

Gran Colombia and at the Parsons 

School of Design in New York City. He 

got his start working for Ford and Earl 

and carrying out freelance work in Paris 

and Milan prior to opening his own New 

York offi ce in 1978. Montoya specializes 

in residential and commercial spaces. 

Known for his qualities of space and 

scale, Montoya’s eclectic style integrates objects 

from across the globe to highlight the 

cultures that inspire him, such as Japan, Morocco, 

Scandinavia and the Americas. “Th e 

client and space dictate what period I will be 

working in,” Montoya explains. “I consider 

myself a tailor who fi nds the best materials 

to clothe an interior in the appealing and 

comfortable way, down to the last detail.” He 

takes projects that are not only interiors, but 

also architecture and exteriors. His clients 

represent his international interests and are 

oft en involved in commerce and diplomacy. 

The master bath of this private residence boasts majestic 

columns on either side of the soaking tub. Detailing such 

as the sink vanity and custom mosaic tile add a unique 

Art Deco-inspired elegance. 

It’s that open-mindedness that helps 

transform his projects into an extension 

of the client highlighted with the texture 

of Montoya’s expertise. 

Th e designer and lecturer has received 

numerous accolades throughout his 

colorful career, including the S.M. Hexter 

award for Interior of the Year in 1977 

and 1980, the Chicago Design Sources 

award for excellence in the fi eld of residential 

interior design and the Resources 

Council Coun Inc. Awards for

Las Vegas Market will be emphasizing sustainability more than ever as World Market 

Center Las Vegas announced a major eff ort to forward green initiatives beginning with 

the upcoming Winter Las Vegas Market. Th e addition of these programs will motivate 

manufacturers and buyers to help reduce our carbon footprints. 

Th e wide sweeping program is called 

One Good World. It includes a new sustainable 

products locator program, a new 

digital newsletter and expanded educational 

off erings at Market, including 

prominent celebrity designers speaking 

on sustainability. 

“With the green economy coming 

fast, we realize that this is an increas- 

ingly important need for our industry,” 

says WMCLV President and CEO Robert 

Maricich. “Th ere’s a lot of good product 

out there, but it can be confusing and 

hard to fi nd. We are taking big steps to 

solve those problems immediately.” 

One component of this major initiative 

includes the One Good Guide—designed 

to help buyers fi nd legitimately sustain-

Bruno Rainaldi lives and works in 

Milan, and for over 20 years has been
