Juan Montoya to be honored
as Design Icon by World
Market Center Las Vegas
International design luminary Juan Montoya is being honored with one of f
the industry’s highest designations — World Market Center Las Vegas:
Design Icon. For years Montoya has been an icon by reputation, and
WMCLV is now making the designation offi cial for one of the top
designers in the U.S.
LAS VEGAS MARKET INSIDER WINTER 2010 I
“I feel very honored and very appreciative and humbled by this award,” ”
says Montoya. “It means that people appreciate the work I have done, and that I have
been doing my job the best way I can do it.”
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, South
America, Montoya studied at Universidad
Gran Colombia and at the Parsons
School of Design in New York City. He
got his start working for Ford and Earl
and carrying out freelance work in Paris
and Milan prior to opening his own New
York offi ce in 1978. Montoya specializes
in residential and commercial spaces.
Known for his qualities of space and
scale, Montoya’s eclectic style integrates objects
from across the globe to highlight the
cultures that inspire him, such as Japan, Morocco,
Scandinavia and the Americas. “Th e
client and space dictate what period I will be
working in,” Montoya explains. “I consider
myself a tailor who fi nds the best materials
to clothe an interior in the appealing and
comfortable way, down to the last detail.” He
takes projects that are not only interiors, but
also architecture and exteriors. His clients
represent his international interests and are
oft en involved in commerce and diplomacy.
The master bath of this private residence boasts majestic
columns on either side of the soaking tub. Detailing such
as the sink vanity and custom mosaic tile add a unique
Art Deco-inspired elegance.
It’s that open-mindedness that helps
transform his projects into an extension
of the client highlighted with the texture
of Montoya’s expertise.
Th e designer and lecturer has received
numerous accolades throughout his
colorful career, including the S.M. Hexter
award for Interior of the Year in 1977
and 1980, the Chicago Design Sources
award for excellence in the fi eld of residential
interior design and the Resources
Council Coun Inc. Awards for
furniture fur design. Montoya
was w also selected as a panel
member m for the National
Endowment E
of the Arts, is
consistently co named in the
AD Top 100 Designers and
is rep represented in the Interior
Design Hall H of Fame.
In recent years, Montoya has found
great joy in giving back. He’s currently
“I have been very lucky in my professional
career and I enjoy giving back to the
community. I want to help them not only
with donations but also construction of
facilities,” he says. “When you have been
in the fi eld for as many years as I have it’s
important to help in areas like education
for the design fi eld, among others.”
Now, as a WMCLV Design Icon,
Montoya has a greater platform to share
his story and inspire and educate future
designers. Th e design legend joins the
“Th e fact that we’re honoring such an
eclectic and world-inspired artist speaks
volumes about design today,” says Robert
Maricich, president and CEO, WMCLV.
“Juan Montoya’s career draws from different
countries and diff erent cultures to
create his own unique aesthetic. World
Market Center Las Vegas and Las Vegas
Design Center couldn’t be more pleased
to designate him Design Icon, for he truly
is that, in every sense of the word.”
Montoya will be honored during the
of the projects he’s done over the past two
decades, and topics will include the origin
and message of projects, the impact of
lighting, cultural diff erences in the design
LAS VEGAS MARKET INSIDER WINTER 2010
18
It’s pretty well documented that we’re moving away from a consumption economy to a participa-
tion economy as consumers and businesses increasingly join in conversations online. A few ana-
lysts are calling this yet another bubble similar to that seen in 1999, but others claim that this new
era foretells even greater Internet utilization and connections than we’ve seen in the past.
World Market Center Las Vegas’ Business
Survival Series continues to equip
attendees with robust programming
designed to identify new revenue streams
that maximize their profi ts amid highly
challenging economic conditions.
Diane Burley, a former journalist and
pioneer in interactive technology,
founded PureContemporary.com
in 2004 to provide a niche site for
architects, designers and prosumers who
appreciate the nuances of contemporary and
modern design. Th e site and its blog attract up
to 4,000 people a day from around the world.
BUSINESS SURVIVAL SERIES
Getting back to the basics
Will consumers return to pre-recession
spending habits? Find out as World Mar-
ket Center Las Vegas and Las Vegas De-
sign Center present “Th e New Lanan- guage of Marketing,” a discussion n
moderated by design industry
guru Lloyd Princeton Tuesday,
Feb. 2, 2010. Th e panel consists of
lifestyle and luxury segment leaders in
media, retail and trade marketing.
Princeton is the founder and principal
consultant of Design Management
Company, which works with interior designers
and manufacturers to help them
increase revenue, develop their business
and gain media exposure. Th e panel
will consist of an editor from the Robb
Report, a senior vice president from Neiman
Marcus and United Kingdom-based
designer Kelly Hoppen.
Th e discussion will address the question
that’s on the minds of everyone in
the marketing community, as well as
consumers themselves. It’s a fact that the
affl uent community still has money to
spend. But will they indeed spend it, and
if so, , when? Princeton will encourage the
panel to shed light on how businesses
nes can position themselves to
appeal ap to the consumer.
In addition to consumer
spending, sp the panel will explore
the following topics: expansion
of ma marketplaces into unexplored
countries like Mongolia and Kazakhstan,
price-reduction incentives to lure customers
into stores and the Internet-based
sales platform for traditional ateliers and
maisons that have long thrived by providing
indulgent customer service.
Th e panel will also address luxury
sales, which are actually rising in some
parts of the world. In 2009, luxury sales
grew 10 percent in Asia while falling 16
percent in North America, 10 percent in
Japan and 8 percent in Europe compared
to the year before. “Th e desire for
luxury is more and more universal, so
the luxury sector has to reach its clients
around the world,“ explains Yves Car-
Engaging
On O Monday, Feb. 1, as part of the
Business Bu Survival Series, Burley
will w present “Engaging With Your
Customers C — the Web Way.” Her
presentation pr will explore how the
usage usag expectations for the worldwide
web webhave have changed due to consumers
increasing online engagement.
“Th e web has been the greatest ‘creative
destructor’ in the last 100 years — upending
celle, chairman of Louis Vuitton, during
the Paris launch of a new luxury website
for China.
Websites and Internet marketing
have changed the appeal of luxury on an
international scale. “Th e digital revolution,
with the global reach of information, has
increased demand by acting as a catalyst
for markets,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, fashion
director for French fashion house Chanel.
According to Princeton, 2010 is a time
for reevaluation. What’s worked in the
past will not necessarily work in the future.
He’ll shed light on massive changes
within the publishing industry, alternative
revenue sources in advertising, client
communications and the value of getting
back to the basics of customer service.
Th e seminar will be followed by a
question-and-answer session, reception
and book signing featuring Princeton’s
book Marketing Interior Design. Th e
event will take place in the showroom of
Jordan Spencer, located in C188 of the
with customers, the web way
business models and trusted channels and
forever changing the way customers seek
information,” says Burley. “For those of us
focused on our ‘day jobs’ the web technologies
can be overwhelming, so this presentation
will provide an overview of the essential
web marketing techniques necessary to
attract, engage and retain your customers.”
Newer strategies to attract customers
online such as social computing blogs,
vlogs, mashups, podcasts, wikis and wordof-mouth
marketing are all part of the
tools and techniques of successful businesses
today. While they are getting lots of
buzz, many companies have been hesitant
to incorporate them into their business
strategies. Th is hesitation stems from lack
of familiarity, fear and uncertainty about
what these are and how to use them.
Burley’s presentation will provide
further information on each of these
tactics by learning what they mean, how
they are being used by businesses and
fi nally exploring how they might fi t with
attendees business strategies.
As executive editor/publisher for Pure
Contemporary, Burley’s background off ers
the design world a unique blend of editorial
prowess and advanced technology
acumen to a subject matter with which
she is completely at home. A frequent
speaker to media and home-furnishings
events, she is the author of “Silicon Valet,”
a must-read blog site for anyone who
publishes information on the web.
Many businesses have failed to reinvigorate
their websites to facilitate and create
a customer connection. Th is seminar will
also focus on strategies to connect with
customers using tools and techniques specifi
c to commerce, community, content,
customer service and creative.
GOING JUVENILE
World Market
Center Las Vegas
preparing for Vegas Kids in June
World Market Center Las Vegas presents an exciting new trade show that brings the
full spectrum of kid’s markets together for one convenient, opportunity-fi lled buying
event. Vegas Kids TM , launching June 13–16, 2010, will be co-located with the inaugural
Gift + Home TM Market at WMCLV’s state-of-the-art campus.
Vegas Kids will off er an all-encompassing
array of juvenile and baby
products, including toys, games, books,
furniture, top-of-bed, gift s, accessories
and more. Th e show will draw exhibitors
and buyers from across a broad spectrum
of interrelated industries, and will represent
the most established companies
and the most innovative products on the
market.
Greg Panos, director of business development
of Vegas Kids, says juvenile is
one industry that has been least aff ected
by the current
environment.
“Juvenile has
always been
a very strong
industry. Moms are giving
up purchasing or downgrading
purchasing for
themselves and their husbands, but have
not let up on what they are spending on
their kids,” says Panos. “Th ey have not
downgraded quality on these purchases
either.”
In fact, Easy Analytic Soft ware Inc. reports
that some categories are expected to
experience phenomenal growth, such as
infant gear, which is projected to increase
12.7 percent in the next fi ve years; youth
bedroom furniture, which is estimated to
grow 12.7 percent by the year 2013; and
cribs, which is expected to climb 12.8
percent over the next fi ve years.
When it launches, Vegas Kids will be
the most technology-oriented show in
the juvenile industry with the innovative
use of smart phone applications, live
feeds, on-site fl at screens, social networking,
mobile marketing, live blogs and
Tweets, technology seminars and more.
“Moms are the most technologically
advanced consumer on the planet,
controlling 20 percent of Internet traffi c
worldwide,” Panos explains. “We anticipate
some of the top mommy bloggers
(and top infl uencers) will be
at the show Tweeting live
from the show fl oor.”
Vegas Kids is also plan-
Levels of Discovery
ning a dynamic lineup of educational
programming and special events. “In this
economy education is almost as important
as products. Buyers want to go to a
very relevant seminar on how they can
save money or compete better,” he says.
Margaret Casey, director of programming,
WMCLV, says attendees can
expect lively and pertinent panel discussions,
programs on e-tail and seminars
about taking the pulse of retail trends.
“Th e goal is to make the programs really
relevant and business savvy,” says Casey.
“We want to help position both the
buyers and the sellers by arming them
with successful strategies for reaching
consumers.”
Vegas Kids is also currently a vital
destination at the bi-annual Las Vegas
Market in Building A, Floor 9 with such
exhibitors as Alligator Enterprise, Berg
Furniture, California Kids, Comfort Research,
Furniture Basics, KidKraft , Levels
of Discovery OneWorld, Southeastern
Kids, Vermont Precision Woodworks/
Bolton Furniture and more.
LAS VEGAS MARKET INSIDER SUMMER 2009
26
June 2010 Gift + Home Market to sizzle
at World Market Center Las Vegas
World Market Center Las Vegas continues expanding the depth of its product selec-
tion with the launch of the fi rst Gift + Home Market, June 13–16, 2010. Th is new event
marks the home furnishings campus’ fi rst stand-alone show outside of the bi-annual
Las Vegas Market.
“We are moving full-steam ahead with
plans to increase our value to buyers and
exhibitors,” says Philip McKay, senior vice
president, WMCLV. “For a relatively new
venue, WMCLV has established itself
as a dominant resource in the industry
and expanding into the gift segment is a
natural progression. Th e gift and home
industry already has a strong presence at
World Market Center Las Vegas and we
anticipate continued growth.”
Recent research shows that 74 percent
of current Las Vegas Market attendees
already purchase gift and decorative accessories.
With key industry showrooms
already present at WMCLV — including
Midwest/CBK, IMAX, Global Views,
C&F Enterprises, Evergreen and Manual
Woodworkers & Weavers, to name a few
— it is clear this vital category continues
to gain momentum. “We anticipate an
eclectic mix of permanent and temporary
resources to add to
the buyers’ experience,”
McKay notes.
Exhibitors will
include permanent
showrooms and temporary
exhibitors in all
Gift + Home categories
such as seasonal
and fl oral, general gift ,
stationery, decorative
accessories, bath and
body, candles, wall
decor and more.
WMCLV is a unique platform to
provide cross-selling opportunities to its
exhibitors and provide buyers with the
greatest expanse of products to diff erentiate
their stores in the marketplace.
In fact, the Vegas Kids show will be
co-located with Gift + Home and will
run concurrently, drawing additional
buyers, expanding product off erings and
cross-selling opportunities. Th e June
events will kick off
the traditional summer
show season
for home and gift
retailers.
Educational
programming
and special events
will round out the
buyers’ experience
at this new show,
focusing on topics
such as visual
merchandising and
C & F Enterprises
Midwest–CBK Global Views
Manual Woodworkers & Weavers
trends. “Compelling displays are key
to healthy sales,” says Margaret Casey,
director of programming, WMCLV. “It’s
a very competitive market and gift retailers
are competing for their share of the
consumer’s wallet.”
And, as always, unbeatable entertainment
and networking opportunities are
in development.
“Given our unique platform, we
anticipate a tremendous buyer turnout
for this inaugural show,” says McKay. A
dedicated buyer outreach team is already
conducting an extensive program focusing
on personal outreach to the buyer
community. In addition, WMCLV’s
stellar marketing program will include
direct mail, extensive advertising and a
comprehensive email campaign.
Compared to other convention cities,
Las Vegas continues to be one of the
most aff ordable U.S. destinations, and
attractive rates have been negotiated for
Gift + Home attendees. WMCLV is the
only venue in the western U.S. capable of
producing a Gift + Home market featuring
a broad selection of resources for
buyer attendees, all on one campus. No
other destination can provide the experience
of Las Vegas for the value off ered.
McKay says that the Gift + Home show
is fi lling a void. “Buyers and exhibitors are
anxious to have a comprehensive resource
in the West, which has been fragmented
and underserved for some time.”
