Some Food forThoughtChildren’s as well as a formal announcement of the largest gift received upto that point for the Through the Eyes of a Child campaign. The donationwas made by a special couple, Mesa natives Tom and Ruth Nesbitt. TheNesbitts have long been pillars of the East Valley community and also havestrong ties to Banner Desert Medical Center, home to Banner Children’s – infact, much of the land where the hospital sits today was donated by relativesof Mrs. Nesbitt.Sadly, Tom passed away in late February, but prior to his passing, heand Ruth made a $1.5 million pledge to the Banner Children’s capital campaign. The couple’s legacy and commitment to improving Mesa lives onthrough their gift, which will be recognized when the new children’s hospitallobby is named for them upon the facility’s opening in early 2009.In addition to the significant gift from the Nesbitts, the campaign hasenjoyed diverse and notable support from a variety of business and communityleaders. Rex Maughan, CEO of Forever Living Products, and hiswife Ruth made a generous donation of $333,000 in stock. ThunderbirdsCharities granted the campaign $125,000 from proceeds from the 2007FBR Open, to name the waiting room in the pediatric outpatient treatmentcenter. Local developer Michael Pollack and his wife Cheryl pledged$100,000 to the effort, and will be recognized on the Information Tree, afocal point of the new hospital’s main lobby. Campaign co-chair JohnGraham and his wife Kathleen committed $100,000, and FoundationChairman of the Board Ken Van Winkle and his spouse Holly have made asignificant pledge as well.Previous pledges to the campaign include a $1 million commitmentfrom NFL great Steve Young, his wife Barbara, and the Forever Young Foundation.Their gift will help to create a Forever Young Zone at the hospital, only the third one of its kind in the nation. Jerry Moyes, through SwiftCharities for Children, has dedicated $500,000 to the hospital from proceedsfrom the organization’s clothing bin collections. The T.W. Lewis Foundation, and Tom and Jan Lewis, hosted a golf tournament in May thatraised $100,000 toward their $250,000 campaign pledge. The Governorsonce again identified Banner Children’s as its primary beneficiary from theannual Governors Ball, held in May. In two years, the event has generateda cumulative $166,000 for the children’s hospital project. And SRP’s$100,000 contribution to the new hospital project will help to expandhealth care resources for children in our community. These are just a few examples of how our community has mobilized toaddress a critical need: expansion of pediatric health care services. The listof contributors to this important campaign grows daily, and as more individuals, corporations and foundations rally to support our youngest andmost vulnerable citizens, Banner Health Foundation is proud of the partnershipsbuilt and the health care solutions created in the process. For more information on the Through the Eyes of a Child capital campaign, please call 480.512.4453. ■We all know milk does the bodygood and it pays to be heart smart, butfew people recognize the importance offeeding your brain for good health. At theBanner Alzheimer’s Institute, our mission isto end Alzheimer’s disease before anothergeneration is lost, by focusing on researchthat will identify ways to prevent Alz heimer’sdisease in healthy people. With recentstudies suggesting that high cholesterol dietsmay contribute to stroke and brain celldamage, and growing evidence showingthat a diet rich in antioxidants from darkvegetables and fruits may help protectbrain cells, this “food for thought” shouldbe shared with the entire community. To accomplish that task, the Women’sCouncil of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute,a fundraising group committed tosupporting research and care efforts, willhost A Night to Remember presentedby Wachovia Securities on Nov. 16, 2007,at the Silverleaf Country Club in Scottsdale. This very special evening will showcasea menu of recipes that include one ormore brain-healthy ingredients, shown tooffer protection against the onset of Alz -heimer’s disease. The featured recipes, created and prepared by local chefs, willbe compiled in a limited-edition cookbook.Proceeds from the event and cookbooksales will benefit the BannerAlzheimer’s Foundation, to support researchand lifestyle prevention studiesnecessary to fulfill the Institute’s mission, and establish family outreach and counselingprograms that are critical toAlzheimer’s care. For information, call 602.239.6934. ■FRIENDS ■ FALL/WINTER 20075

High TouchmeetsHigh TechBanner Gatewayreadies to opento community

Your health care. Your community.Your gateway to excellence. This theme captures the spirit of the nonprofitBanner Gateway Medical Center, scheduled to open its doors to the SoutheastValley later this month. This innovative facility, which melds leadingedgemedical technology with the care-centered missionof Banner Health, will offer a comprehensive healingenvironment focused on addressing the needs of thewhole patient, including mind, body and spirit.Banner Gateway has been designed around evidence-basedresearch that identifies key elements thatenhance both healing and patient safety. Evidencebasedmedicine already shapes methods to deliverquality patient care, and now, evidence-based designsets the stage for today's "next generation" hospitals. The facility’s planning team, led by CEO BeckyKuhn, identified evidence-based design as a key driverfor the hospital in its early stages of development.Researchers behind this design philosophy have discoveredlinkages between hospital design and patientand staff safety and satisfaction, all of which supportBanner Health’s mission to make a difference in people’slives through excellent patient care.A reflection of both the evidence-based designimperative and Kuhn’s team-focused managementstyle, this state-of-the-art facility will feature numerousamenities for the benefit of patients, employees, and members of the community who choose to beaffiliated with Banner Gateway. And while the new Banner Gateway MedicalCenter will offer advancements virtually unmatchedin this community, the hospital is only as strong asthe people who are associated with it – and those individualstake their awesome responsibility to thecommunity to heart.“As the CEO preparing for the opening of BannerGateway Medical Center, I feel a bit like theconductor of a highly tuned orchestra, leading talentedmusicians in varying instrumental sections tocreate beautiful music,” shares Kuhn. “The openingof a new hospital takes tremendous work and coordinationin and among multiple teams.”She continues, “For me, one of the most satisfyingaspects of this project is to watch the intenseeffort and outstanding results of the various teams atwork. Our teams have been tuning their instrumentsfor many months and have already produced somegreat music. With the opening just days away, thegrand concert and the best music lie ahead. I feelprivileged to be a part of it.”In addition to the highly-trained experts whowill deliver excellent care to the Southeast Valley, and the administrative leadership, including Kuhn, charged with ensuring a culture of caring remains atthe forefront of all hospital activi-Southeast Valley communityleader Tony Hyland11

They also recognize that, as a nonprofitorganization, Banner Health relies on thegenerosity of individuals, corporations and foundationsto underwrite many of the programs andservices offered by the community hospital. Andtheir objective is to enlist support from their owncolleagues and networks, to ensure that the healingenvironment created at Banner Gateway is sustainedfor future generations.Northrop, a husband and proud father of foursmall children, is involved with Banner Gateway becausehe believes the project offers him “an opportunityto actually build a real, valuable, important andtangible living legacy for ourselves, our familiesand our community.”He calls on his own business acumento aid in the fundraising process and understandsthe tremendous investment requiredto create a facility of Banner Gateway’smagnitude.“Projects valued at millions of dollars likethis one don’t just happen. They are plannedand achieved through commitment and hard, hard work,” explains Northrop. “I’m workingfor the best health care possible for my family.I can see clearly how this new health care facil-ity will make life better for my family.”Hyland, who has lived in the Southeast Valleysince 1953, echoes Northrop’s sentiments: “Gilbertis fortunate to have this asset – it’s coming to theright place at the right time. My top priority is helpingto secure the resources Banner Gateway needs,to ensure that people in this part of the Valley havelong-term, convenient access to the excellent careBanner provides.”Hyland’s passion and enthusiasm for the hospitalproject and for his community are infectious. He wasdrawn to Gilbert because he knew he and his familycould build roots there, and as a business owner, he’scommitted to identifying and supporting projects thatmake the community vibrant.“The people at Banner Gateway are great –especially Becky, who cares so much – and it’s a greatcause,” shares Hyland. “The network I have builtover the years is strong and I hope to open people’seyes to the amazing things we’re doing and how theycan get involved with the hospital. Being affiliatedwith a project like this where we’re helping people getwell is very rewarding.”Already, Banner Gateway has received significantendorsement from donors and volunteers, beforeits doors have even opened. This support is atestament to the positive relationships that ambassadorslike Northrop and Hyland, and other representativesof Banner Gateway, have formed with thecommunity. The opening of Banner Gateway is aculmination of years of planning, and most importantly, partnership with the Town of Gilbert and residentsof the Southeast Valley. Watching over thecommunity in its protective shadow, Banner Gatewaywill stand tall as an eternal symbol of pride forthe residents of Gilbert and beyond, embracing themantra: Your health care. Ms.Stucker is supported by a number of volunteers whodonate their time to assist with the screenings.During a screening, Ms. Stucker and her volunteersperform various tests to monitor blood pressure, pulse, weight, diabetes and blood oxygen levels.“Residents really appreciate the screenings and theopportunity to talk with a health professional in a relaxedsetting,” Stucker said. “In addition to thescreenings, we answer basic health questionsand encourage patients to see a doctor aboutpotential issues, or even go to the EmergencyDepartment, if their situation is more serious.”At each clinic, patients can pick up pamphletsand brochures containing a wide rangeof current health information. Stucker providesgeneral responses to health care inquiries, andteaching referrals for specific health needs. Each attendee also receives a personal healthrecord sheet to track test results. The sheet is agreat resource that patients can use to providehealth information to their primary physiciansand other health care providers.screeningsThrough their interaction withthis program, participants alsohave the opportunity to learnabout other Banner Healthprograms and services thatmay improve their health andwell being. farBanner ThunderbirdChildren’s SafetyMaking aDifferenceCotton candy, balloon rides, clowns, live music, inflatable bouncyactivities, fire trucks and a few helicopters offer all the makings for a funfamily event. Add in 1,200 free bike helmets and helpful safety demonstrations, and you have the Banner Thunderbird Children’s Safety Fair.P“ resenting safety information in a party-like to attract even more participants who prefer warmeratmosphere gives the kids the perspective weather festivities.that safety is hip and fun,” says Naomi Representatives from the Banner ThunderbirdFoote, RN, Banner Thunderbird Medical Emergency Department, Pediatrics, Public RelationsCenter. “They are not lectured on safety, and other hospital volunteers contribute time and energyto planning this annual event. In its early years, thebut instead are invited to learn about it bylooking, touching, and trying new things.”What started as a kid-focused event to drawattention to the importance of wearing helmets when ridingbikes and scooters has evolved into a Northwest Valleyfair was organized and managed by only 20 people. Dueto its ever-growing popularity, the fair now requires thehelp of 300 people, including local residents, fire andpolice department personnel, vendors, performers andtradition now entering its seventh year. The trained staff to fit helmetsinaugural fair welcomed nearly 1,000 people to the PeoriaSports Complex. Today, more than 7,000 kids and parentsfor the children, who jointogether to stage thiscome for the four-hour, fun-filled event – and thefree bike helmets! January has typically been the hostmonth for the fair, but the 2008 event will move to April,The annual BannerThunderbird Children’s SafetyFair promotes safety and fun.40FRIENDS ■ FALL/WINTER 2007

community event.“Many of the same families return to the event eachyear, bringing their younger children, along with their olderkids – the ‘veterans’ of the Children's Safety Fair,” explainsFoote. “The older siblings act as mentors for the littleones and demonstrate that getting and wearing a bikehelmet is fun! I’ve also noticed a lot more kids wearing helmetsin the past few years. Using a helmet has becomecool, thanks to the excitement created by the Safety Fair.”The Banner Thunderbird Children’s Safety Fair hasbecome more than a community event for the hospitaland its partners, the Glendale and Peoria Fire and PoliceDepartments. The fair also serves as a means to promotethe growing Children’s Center at Banner Thunderbird. When the Emergency Department at the hospital firstdiscussed the concept of a safety fair, the PediatricDepartment consisted of just eight beds in a corner of amedical-surgical unit. Today, Banner Thunderbird is theprimary provider of pediatric care to West and NorthwestValley communities. The Children’s Center at BannerThunderbird is a 24-bed unit with plans for expansion thatwill add 16 more beds and a 12-bed pediatric intensivecare unit (PICU).“The Children's Safety Fair has also given local studentsinterested in health care careers a chance to helpout and get hands-on experience with kids in our community,”shares Foote. “The younger children look up tothese high school and college students who are modelingsafety behaviors.”The Banner Thunderbird Children’s Safety Fair hasmade a difference in lives of children throughout theWest Valley. Covering everything from fire, home and bicyclesafety to stranger danger and Internet predators, the event is an interactive and enjoyable opportunity toeducate children on ways to protect themselves. Withnearly 7,500 bike helmets distributed since the fair’shumble beginnings, and thanks to hundreds of volunteers, families now have a much greater awareness aboutsafety. And, while everyone is enjoying the festivities, thestaff and volunteers from Banner Thunderbird can feelsatisfied knowing that kids in our community have beenhelped by their efforts."The Children's Safety Fair is a wonderful, high energy event for children and families tolearn about safety, get fitted for a bike helmet, tour ambulances and helicopters, andhave lots of laughs with the clowns andmagicians,” says Joy Daugherty, ChildLife coordinator, Banner ThunderbirdMedical Center. “The kiddos are havingfun and learning how to be safe atthe same time - that's a child's kind oflearning!" ■Below: Volunteers assist with the fittings. Nearly7,500 bike helmets have been distributed since thefair’s inception.FRIENDS ■ FALL/WINTER 2007 41

Focus On Planned GiftsWhen an individual makes a gift of money or stock to BannerHealth Foundation in exchange for a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), theFoundation can provide annual lifetime payments in return. A CGA offersincreased income and significant tax benefits, and most importantly, supportsBanner Health’s mission to make a difference in people’s lives throughexcellent patient care.Benefits of a Charitable Gift Annuity may include:■ Fixed income■ Dependable payments■ Backed by all Foundation assets■ Partially tax-free payments■ Charitable income tax deductionIf a donor establishes a $10,000 Charitable Gift Annuity, Banner HealthFoundation pays the donor a set amount every year, with timing of paymentsdetermined by the age of the income beneficiaries. A portion of eachpayment is typically tax-free, and the donor is entitled to an income taxdeduction when the gift is made. If the donor is age 65 when the annuityis established, the annuity rate is 6.0% and annual lifetime fixed paymentsare $600. Thus, the donor’s personal financial position is enhanced andcharitable health care is advanced at Banner Health.Charitable Gift Annuity RatesBanner Health FoundationOne LifeTwo LivesAGE RATE AGES RATE60 5.7% 65/60 5.5%65 6.0% 65/65 5.6%70 6.5% 70/65 5.7%75 7.1% 75/70 6.1%80 8.0% 80/75 6.6%85 9.5% 85/90 8.4%90+ 11.3% 90/90 9.3%For more information about CGAsand other planned giving programs, please contact:Dan Linguiti602.747.4487daniel.linguiti@bannerhealth.comNon-ProfitOrganizationU.S. PostagePAIDPhoenix, ArizonaPermit No. 1596P.O.
