Huntington Harbour Garden Clubby Barbara Devlin & Peggy MouritzHuntington Harbour Garden Clubheld a St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon for theirMarch meeting at the home of ConnieMandic. All the members and guests wenthome with a pot of shamrocks, courtesyof Connie. Co-hostesses of the day wereSherry Bullock and Irene Cooper. Conniehad prepared a luncheon of corned beefand cabbage and boiled potatoes and IrishBread. Her assistants, Sherry and Ireneprovided the salads and desserts. Wereally celebrated St.Patrick’s Day in style. Our Floral Design Speaker of the day wasJanelle Wiley from Sherman Gardens. MsWiley prepared a Spring Floral Basketusing oasis. She placed the oasis in thebasket one-inch taller that the basket andtaped it to the basket. She placed a treebranch in the center of the basket (canbuy one from a florist if you don’t haveone) then inserted chocolate peppermint, hybrid blue Delphiniums, Bells of Ireland, small blue, pink and white anemones andpink tulips, yellow gerbera daisies, andpink cherio roses. She finished off thebasket by inserting white lacy flowersinto the oasis all around the basket sothe flowers will drape over the basket. She suggested using pencil chopsticks toinsert the plants into the oasis. The basketneeds to be watered every two days andsuggested mixing Seven- up and a smallamount of bleach and spray the basket afew times a week with the mixture. It was announced at the meetingthat three members of the HHGC wonawards at Huntington Harbour ArtAssociation Show at the HB Library inMarch—Wynne Hayes, Pam Smart &Kay Sullivan. The March 2010 Garden of theMonth Award was presented to the gardenof Michael & Suzanne Moulton, 16971Edgewater Lane (Mainland). A brilliantsplash of color takes the eye of passersbyhere. Mainly yellow ranunculus andanemones are massed in planter beds oneither side of the driveway. The colorcontinues through the courtyard withlush tropical planting, a wide area leadingto the front door. Mature king palms andlava rock boulders give a Hawaiian touch. The April meeting of the HHGCwas held at the home of President, MaryJohnson who surprised members with atasty luncheon in her beautiful succulentbackyard. Members who supplied dessertwere Barbara Devlin and Barbara Simone.Stu Span, a Rosarian, from RogersGarden spoke on choosing and the careof roses in the yard. He said the mostpopular rose is a hybrid with long stemswith a single rose on the end, followedby floribunda roses for a border andGrandflora. He suggested that buyersof roses should go to several nurseriesand see what is available before buyinga rose bush. Red roses that are fragranttend to mildew, yellow roses flower a lotbut don’t last long and fall apart easilyand lavender roses usually have fragrance.Very few white roses have fragrance but hementioned two that are fragrant, QueenMary II and Pope John II.He suggested when planting roseskeep them away from trees—5 feetfrom the drop line of trees. He reallyrecommends growing roses in pots—thebigger the pot the bigger the roses will get.Plastic pots will hold moisture better thanclay pots and it is easier to move roses inplastic pots. Use planting mix in the soil, not potting mix, work it 6 inches into theground, breaking up clay to hold moisture.Rose roots go down 17 inches andthen spread out. Plant 3 feet apart andyou will have less trouble with mildew &insects and keep away from walls if possible(except climbing roses), Roses likethe sun but they are not tropical plants;they like the change of seasons and need5 hours of sun a day and morning sun isbetter than afternoon sun. It’s good tohose down the leaves of roses to knockof pests. Roses should be fertilized everymonth. The April HHGC Garden of theMonth Award was given to DavenportDrive at Algonquin for the HuntingtonHarbour Property Owner’s Associationwhich does an impressive job of beautifyingthe Harbour area.
