Without sand/gravel, theconstruction industry would come to a grinding halt.Because aggregates play such a vital role in the growth ofthe nations, demand for all types is expected to increasesubstantially in the years ahead. With the increase indemand, the common sources are being mined fasterthan nature can replenish, creating a highly skewedsupply-demand situation.In India un<strong>til</strong> recently, one used to think that river sand isinexhaustible. With India’s growth story, the unprecedenteddemand for sand to build factories, high-rise apartments,offices, schools and basic infrastructure such as highways,runways and parking lots is beginning to take a toll on riversystems, coasts and the people who depend on them fortheir livelihoods. River Sand Mining, which has been goingon for ages now poses a threat to Water Security, as itdamages river beds and increases the threat of floods.River Sand is banned in many states in India forenvironmental issues, and so there is a pressing need foralternate option to River Sand.Although we have WALTA [Water, Land and Trees Act],which has a new set of sand quarrying policy to overcomethe shortage of sand and help the construction industry, thegovernance and sustainability remains a challenge.Crushed Sand replacing River SandRealizing the need of replacing the River Sand, theconstruction companies have begun to use Crushed Sandby using appropriate design so as to ensure that there isno compromise on quality of construction. Investment inR&D for the use of the Crushed Sand has been on the riseand many construction companies today have the ability toproduce high grade concrete using Crushed Sand. Anotherreason for the construction companies to look at CrushedSand option is its “Round the Year” availability.Additionally, construction companies have also beenlooking at reliable and cost effective technology toreduce the ultrafines in the Crushed Sand and getconsistent quality from the Aggregate Suppliers. AirClassification, Water Classification etc have been usedin India but with limited success in achieving productconsistency. Many have attributed the reasons to highercapital cost / lower ROI.TIL and Astec saw an opportunity for the High FrequencyScreens (HFS) in this application. Engineered to providehigher production capacities and more efficient sizingcompared to air or water classification processes, the HighFrequency Screens feature aggressive vibration applieddirectly to the screen that allows removal of fines. Thisunique technology facilitates the removal of the ultra finesfrom the crusher dust in the most cost effective way andhas come as a big relief to the construction companies.With the TIL-Astec agreement, India got a technology withan optimum owning cost and lower operating cost in theCrushing and Screening business.
