On this delightful cruise, Ocean Countess visits some of the most interesting parts of the British Isles including charming offshore
islands, Edinburgh and Dublin. This is a wonderful opportunity to sample historic sights, ancient cultures, beautiful scenery and
even tax-free shopping.
YOUR ITINERARY:
Saturday 8th: We travel to Hull and board the Ocean
Countess which sails at 2000hrs.
Sunday 9th: A day at sea to enjoy the many facilities.
Monday 10th: St. Helier is the capital and by far the
biggest town on the island. It is overlooked by two
fortifications: Elizabeth Castle withstood Oliver
Cromwell and his army for seven weeks in 1651, and
was later used by the occupying German forces during
the Second World War. Fort Regent is built on an
outcrop above the town and has now been converted
into a sports and leisure complex. Inside, there is an
aquarium, a postal museum, a funfair and the old castle
ramparts give excellent views out across the town and
the bay. Other in town attractions include the awardwinning
Jersey Museum, the new Maritime Museum
and the Occupation Tapestry Gallery. Very popular for
shopping, the best area in St. Helier is in the King
Street/Queen Street precinct area. Most luxury goods
are less expensive than in the UK, as Jersey, although
VAT free, has low duties on items such as alcohol,
cigarettes, perfume, cosmetics and electrical goods.
Tuesday 11th: We spend the day in Falmouth,
Cornwall.
Wednesday 12th: Dropping anchor off Hugh Town,
the main town of the Isles of Scilly, affords the chance
to visit two of this unique cluster of islands, lying 28
miles south west of Land’s End. St. Mary’s is the
largest at just six square miles, while the effects of the
sub-tropical climate are spectacularly evident in the
blaze of colour at Tresco’s renowned Abbey Gardens.
Thursday 13th: The capital of the Emerald Isle, with
its images of ancient Kings, magical folklore and that
essential Irish hospitality. From Trinity College to
stylish O’Connell Street, Dublin offers a real sense of
history, wonderful restaurants, cafés and of course,
bars. Enjoy the craic and perhaps an expertly served
pint of Guinness.
Friday 14th: Portree, capital of the Isle of Skye, is the
Cruising
largest of the Inner Hebrides, renowned in history
and song and well known for its iconic castles and
natural beauty. Pay your respects to one of Scotland’s
real heroines, Flora McDonald, who rescued Bonnie
Prince Charlie and took him ‘over the sea to Skye’.
Saturday 15th: The capital and administrative centre
of the Orkney Islands, set on the principal island
known as Mainland. The Orkneys comprise 70 or so
islands, rocks and skerries that cover an area of 376
square miles. You can still detect the Norse influence
and the Stone Age settlement at Skara Brae, older than
either the Pyramids or Stonehenge, is fascinating.
Sunday 16th: Leith is the home of the Royal Yacht
Britannia and gateway to beautiful and vibrant
Edinburgh dominated by captivating Edinburgh Castle,
home of the Scottish Crown Jewels. Visit the Palace of
Holyroodhouse, an official residence of H.M. The Queen
and where Mary, Queen of Scots was slain in 1566.
Monday 17th: We arrive back in Hull at approximately
10.00am and after disembarkation return home.
Please note that in the event of adverse weather
conditions that prevent the vessel from calling
at one of the scheduled ports of call, alternative
arrangements will be made where possible.
