WOODLYNDE GOES GREEN - GETS LAUNCHED!The new <strong>Woodlynde</strong> Goes Green campaign was launched during Earth Week and met withgreat energy and enthusiasm from <strong>the</strong> community. LOWER SCHOOLCAREER FAIR FOR UT STUDENTS ON MAY 8Guidance Counselor, Sarah Gotthold, is hosting a Career Fair for <strong>the</strong> UT students of<strong>the</strong> Lower <strong>School</strong> on May 8, from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Parents and friends will share informationabout <strong>the</strong>ir professions with <strong>the</strong> children.The students will learn what kind of backgroundeducation and training are needed for different careers, what a typical day looks like, and why <strong>the</strong>speakers chose a specific career.The goal is to share a realistic sample of <strong>the</strong> variety of jobs thatmake our world a better place, and for <strong>the</strong> students to see that endless possibilities exist for <strong>the</strong>m.TRANSITION DAYS FOR UT 3 AND UT 4 - MAY 5 AND 6On Monday, May 5, some Middle <strong>School</strong> students will visit <strong>the</strong> UT 3 and UT 4 classes to talkabout 6th grade and answer <strong>the</strong>ir questions about life in Middle <strong>School</strong>. On Tuesday, May 6,<strong>the</strong> UT 3 and UT 4 students will visit in <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> to meet <strong>the</strong> teachers, take a tour, andeven try <strong>the</strong> lockers.Afterwards, <strong>the</strong> Lower <strong>School</strong> and Middle <strong>School</strong> students will ga<strong>the</strong>r for anice cream social.WOODLYNDE SUMMER 2008 - ADVENTURES IN THE FAR EASTThe <strong>Woodlynde</strong> 2008 Summer Program (June 23 - July 18) and Adventure DayCamp for students entering grades one through sixth, is currently accepting applications.Theprogram offers classes in reading, writing, ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and an afternoon adventure day camp.There will be an optional after-camp activity program as well. Please contact Denise Pritchardat 610-293-6552 for an application.MIDDLE SCHOOLMIDDLE SCHOOL DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICEOn Wednesday, April 23, <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> participated in <strong>the</strong>ir third and final Day ofCommunity Service for this year. Students in 6th grade returned again to <strong>the</strong> PierceElementary <strong>School</strong> in Philadelphia. Sixth grade teacher, Paige Fetzner shared <strong>the</strong> followingdescription of <strong>the</strong> experience.“While <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> kids were broken into groups and placed in <strong>the</strong>younger classrooms (Pre-K through 2nd).The students basically worked with small groups ofchildren helping <strong>the</strong>m to read, write, and create various projects. Our students have really enjoyed<strong>the</strong>se trips to Pierce.They feel that <strong>the</strong>y’ve made a difference in <strong>the</strong> lives of o<strong>the</strong>rs, helping both inand outside of <strong>the</strong> classroom.”The 7th grade visited Valley Forge Park for <strong>the</strong>ir day of service cleaning up some of <strong>the</strong> trails thatare used for tours. According to Anne Marie Bruce ’13, “The trip actually turned out to bepretty interesting. Some interesting events that occurred included: A.J. Cruciani ’13 finding <strong>the</strong>rib-cage of a deer and Isabella Tognini ’13 walking into a spider web. After we were donecleaning we <strong>went</strong> to McDonald’s. Overall I think we all had a lot of fun and did a good deed in <strong>the</strong>process.”
The 8th grade spent <strong>the</strong> day at <strong>the</strong> Philabundance Food Bank in Philadelphia. In order toaccomplish <strong>the</strong>ir assignment to pack boxes of food for <strong>the</strong> elderly, <strong>the</strong> kids were divided into “foodpackers,” “trash picker-uppers,” and “box stackers.” Assisted by <strong>the</strong>ir teachers, Len Byron, AnneEckert, Tracey Szmajda, Michele Coghlan and Kathy Gogola, <strong>the</strong> students packed600 boxes (at 25 lbs. each) or a total of 15,000 pounds, which is equivalent to 7 and ½ tons of food,for <strong>the</strong> elderly in <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia area.SUMMER AT WOODLYNDE SCHOOL<strong>Woodlynde</strong> provides a dynamic 6 week summer program designed for our students and students in<strong>the</strong> surrounding community. Our Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> program offers academicclasses that are individualized to provide challenge and support. In <strong>the</strong> afternoon students maychoose from a variety of engaging and imaginative activity classes.The program begins on Monday,June 23 and runs for six weeks. Good Citizenship Awards will be presented at an evening banquet.UPPER SCHOOL ARTISTS IN 2008 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITIONFive Upper <strong>School</strong> students, Genny Brusilow ’08, Nick Daller ’08, David Gilbert ’08,Avery Clark ’10, and Michaela Anderson ’11 were selected to participate in <strong>the</strong> 2008Congressional Art Competition. This is a prestigious contest in which students across <strong>the</strong>United States compete to have <strong>the</strong>ir artwork displayed in <strong>the</strong> United States Capitol for one year.The artwork is currently on display at <strong>the</strong> Wayne Art Center, and <strong>the</strong> exhibit will run until May 9th.Krystal Reinhard, Art Teacher, has facilitated <strong>the</strong> entrance of our students’ work in thisendeavor. She encourages <strong>the</strong> <strong>Woodlynde</strong> community to celebrate <strong>the</strong> accomplishments of <strong>the</strong>sestudents and visit <strong>the</strong> exhibit.A press release from Congressman Joe Sestak’s officeannounced that “Michaela Anderson, 9 th grader at The <strong>Woodlynde</strong> <strong>School</strong>, won HonorableMention in <strong>the</strong> category of Mixed Media for her work titled Life through My Eyes.”Congratulations to Michaela!ELMIRA COLLEGE KEY AWARDED TO EMMA LIPSCHUTZUpper <strong>School</strong> student, Emma Lipschutz ’09, has been awarded <strong>the</strong> Elmira College Key, by<strong>the</strong> college’s Alumni Association. High school juniors are nominated for having demonstratedoutstanding school and community leadership and a minimum grade point average of 90. If Emmaenrolls at Elmira College she will be eligible for a scholarship. Congratulations, Emma!

Congratulation, Michael!WOODLYNDE’S SPORTS MONTHLY STAFF COVERS THE 76ERS<strong>Thank</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> efforts of former <strong>Woodlynde</strong> Board member and 76er’s President andGeneral Manager, Ed Stefanski, Advancement Director, Diane Tuppeny-Hess,and <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia 76ers, Ben Grant ’09 and Jerome Bailey ’09, had <strong>the</strong>opportunity to cover <strong>the</strong> 76ers game with <strong>the</strong> Detroit Pistons on April 9 as members of <strong>the</strong> press.This included eating at <strong>the</strong> pre-game buffet, sitting on press row during <strong>the</strong> game, takingphotographs courtside, meeting local journalists and newscasters, and covering <strong>the</strong> pre- and postgamenews conferences.A lively Special Sixers Edition of Sports Monthly was <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong>irevening.The boys were accompanied by Jeff Gelman, <strong>the</strong>ir journalism teacher and mentor, whoenjoyed taking great action photographs right from <strong>the</strong> baseline. Please take advantage of <strong>the</strong> opportunity to buy a treat and support this cause at<strong>the</strong> same time!UPPER SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS - FUN WHILE LEARNINGOn Friday, April 25 <strong>the</strong> entire Upper <strong>School</strong> participated in field trips in Philadelphia.The9th and 10th grades participated in a history scavenger hunt around Philadelphia, organized byfaculty members Charles Brennan and Loren Smith. Brennan reports: “The purposeof <strong>the</strong> field trip was to acquaint <strong>the</strong> students with different aspects of <strong>the</strong> city, both historical andcultural. To start, <strong>the</strong>y had to decipher a cryptic clue. Once <strong>the</strong>y decided on <strong>the</strong> implied location<strong>the</strong>y had to answer a question about something at that location. The clues took <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>Reading Terminal Market, Chinatown, and Washington Square. It also required <strong>the</strong>m to ride <strong>the</strong>subway and answer questions about pieces of public sculpture. Any help that <strong>the</strong>y might haveneeded had to come from perfect strangers, because, as was requested, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Woodlynde</strong> chaperonesdid a wonderful job of keeping mum. The students had to cooperate with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs in <strong>the</strong>irgroups, while taking a crash course in orienteering. It was a day of fun, mistakes, sunburn, sore feet,and just soaking in <strong>the</strong> flavors of Philadelphia.”
The 11th and 12th grade students traveled to <strong>the</strong> Constitution Center for a day ofinteractive experiences. Since <strong>the</strong> 12th grade social studies curriculum during <strong>the</strong> first semesterfocuses on political science and American government, <strong>the</strong> trip functioned as preparation for <strong>the</strong>11th graders and a culmination of <strong>the</strong>ir studies for <strong>the</strong> 12th grade.Accordingto history teacher Chris Mellor, who planned <strong>the</strong> trip, <strong>the</strong> students particularly enjoyed <strong>the</strong>feature show “Freedom Rising” and <strong>the</strong> traveling exhibit “Baseball as America.”SUMMER PROGRAM FOR UPPER SCHOOLA flexible and dynamic program is available for Upper <strong>School</strong> Students beginning June 23 andrunning for six weeks.
