It can beloaded from behind, from the right-hand side or, optionally,from the left as well. A fourth body length and the optionalsuper-high roof mean that you have up to 17 m 3 of cargospace available for this. Near-vertical inner walls, levelledoffwheel arches and a payload of up to 2710 kg allow theavailable space to be used to the full. The Sprinter is impressive on the road.And on the balance sheet, tooEconomically-efficient enginesHigh quality standards and solid resale values contributeto the overall cost-effectiveness of the Sprinter, as do itshighly sophisticated engines. When equipped with the advancedOM 651 4-cylinder CDI diesel engine, availablewith a choice of three power outputs, or the supremelycon fident OM 642 V6 CDI diesel engine, the Sprintersets standards in terms of economic efficiency and futurecompatibility.If the van is registered as a commercialvehicle, all four CDI diesel engines meet the requirementsof the EURO V 1 emission standard and consume far lessfuel than the previous engines with a corresponding reductionin exhaust gas emissions. In addition to this, the CDIdiesel engines can also be made to comply with the EEV(Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) standard –currently Europeʼs most stringent emission standard – ifrequested by the customer. These vehicles ensure extremelylow emissions of particulate matter, for example.As well as displaying these attributes, the Sprinterʼsengines are also impressively quiet – thanks to effectivenoise insulation which ensures a pleasant sound levelin the interior.Fuel-saving transmission. The innovative ECO Gear 6-speedmanual transmission is the ideal partner for the Sprinterʼsdiesel engines. Thanks to the intelligent interaction betweenthe ECO start/stop function, economical diesel engine andconsumption-optimised manual transmission, it bringsabout a substantial reduction in fuel consumption and emissions,especially in inner-city traffic. The efficiency package1 is available as special equipment for all model variantsequipped with the OM 651 4-cylinder CDI diesel engineand ECO Gear 6-speed manual transmission.Innovative Natural Gas and Liquefied Gas Technologies.With the Sprinter LGT (Liquefied Gas Technology) Mercedes-Benz expands its range of BlueEFFICIENCY technologiesby incorporating the particularly economic-efficient liquefiedgas drive system. The bivalent drive system (it is possibleto choose between petrol and liquefied gas operation)impresses with its relatively low fuel costs, significantlyreduced pollutant emissions and a range of around 450 kmwhen operating on liquefied gas. The range can be increasedwithout any problem by simply switching to operationwith petrol – in a manner similar to that of the triedand tested Sprinter NGT (Natural Gas Technology) withbivalent natural gas and petrol drive. Four good reasons for driving your business forwardsThe Sprinter with all-wheel drive 1 1Available for selected variants. For availability by model, please see the tables on pages 30–33If you also need to go off-road with your Sprinter or are oftenfaced with tough operating conditions, we recommendthe optionally available engageable all-wheel-drive system 1 .It truly excels under poor road and weather conditionswith its combination of increased traction, enhanced directionalstability and road adhesion, and latest-generationESP. The engageable all-wheel drive 1 transfers the enginepower to all four wheels simultaneously, splitting it 35 : 65between the front and rear axle. And an optional gearreduction is available to extend the range of applicationpossibilities on difficult terrain and further improvestarting performance.One of the outstanding features of the Sprinterʼs all-wheeldrivesystem 1 is the absence of mechanical differentiallocks. In their place is the much lighter 4ETS ElectronicTraction System which, being fully automatic, relieves thestrain on the driver. It engages when one or more wheelsstart to spin, braking the spinning wheels individually andincreasing the drive torque at the wheels which still offersufficient grip.The all-wheel drive system operates even more effectively because the Electronic Traction System 4ETS is integrated in the Sprinterʼs standard-fit ESPTechnology | All-wheel drive19

Your safety is a precious commodity

The figure on page 21 (left) shows various airbags at their maximum deployment for illustrative purposes only.Thereʼs no such thing as too much safety. Thatʼs why weʼvemade every effort to ensure that the Sprinter offers thedriver, passengers and other road users the highest possibledegree of protection. A prime example of this is theElectronic Stability Program ADAPTIVE ESP which, forthe first time, takes account of the vehicle load – one ofthe key influencing factors. As the vehicle load can varyduring the course of a trip, sensors determine the currentlevel, thus enabling ADAPTIVE ESP to perform its preciselymeasured stabilising interventions.In order to increase handling safety when towing a trailer,we have now extended the range of ADAPTIVE ESP ® functionsfor the Sprinter to include Trailer Stability Assist.If the trailer starts to sway, the new system counteractsthese movements to help the driver to stabilise thevehicle/trailer combination. ESP ® Trailer Stability Assistis activated automatically if a trailer coupling is fittedex factory. The optional ASSYSTservice computer allows flexible, application-dependent oil change intervals of up to 50,000 kmin the case of the diesel models (petrol models:40,000 km) or every two years at the latest. Withthe ASSYST service computer on board, maintenanceintervals are up to 100,000 km (diesel models)or 80,000 km (petrol models), depending onapplication.○ Load-compartment panelling up to belt rail,washable. Half-height wood hardboard panelstrimmed with grey PVC sheeting protect the metalsurfaces from damage, e.g. due to shifting loads,and enhance the appearance of the load compartment(roof-high load-compartment panelling alsoavailable).○ Lashing rails under the roof frame. ● Full-width bulkhead. The bulkhead protectsthe driver and co-driver from shifting loads.○ Bulkhead with fixed or sliding window.Optionally, the bulkhead can be fitted witha fixed or sliding window, allowing the driverto keep an eye on the load compartment.○ Reversing camera. When reverse gear is engaged,the reversing camera sends images of the areabehind the vehicle to a 17.8-cm monitor. In this way,the system makes parking and manoeuvring easierand safer (display also possible via COMAND APS).○ Super-single tyres. Vehicles with a perm. GVWof 4.6 t are optionally available with super-singletyres in place of the twin tyres. In the case of thepanel van, these tyres give a through-loading widthof approx. 1.22 m between the wheel arches,making it possible to load Europallets cross-wise.○ Chrome-trimmed radiator grille. An attractivechrome trim lends the radiator grille a distinctivelook and further enhances the appearance of thevehicle.○ Trailer coupling (ball-type head). Both rigid anddetachable ball-head trailer couplings are available,with 13-pin trailer socket. Maximum permissibledrawbar load is 100 kg, with a maximum permissibletowing capacity of 2 t (optionally higher).○ Rear step. A special rear step is available, forvehicles with or without trailer coupling. A sprungrear step is also available (only for vehicles withouttrailer coupling).● Side rub strips. Wide plastic strips protect thebodywork from minor damage.○ Full wheel covers. As well as looking good,the full wheel covers made from resistant plasticalso protect the valves.○ Bi-xenon headlamps with Add-Light system andcornering light function. GlossaryADAPTIVE ESP ElectronicStability ProgramADAPTIVE ESP® is an innovative dynamichandling control system which,for the first time, also takes the vehicleload into account. It actively intervenesin certain hazardous drivingsituations, e.g. if there is an imminentrisk of skidding, by applying a brakingforce to one or more wheels and adjustingthe engine output as requiredso as to help the driver deal with thehazardous situation. As well as aidingdirectional stability, ADAPTIVE ESP ®combines the functions of the antilockbraking system (ABS), accelerationskid control (ASR), electronicbrake force distribution (EBD), BrakeAssist (BAS) and the optional StartoffAssist system. In addition to this,ESP ® Trailer Stability Assist enhanceshandling safety when towing a trailer.Note:ADAPTIVE ESP ® can only act withinthe limits imposed by the laws ofphysics. As a result, it cannot preventskidding caused by aquaplaning,for example. If the driver exceedsthese limits, even ADAPTIVE ESP ®will not be able to prevent an accident!Electronic brake force distribution(EBD)Electronic brake force distribution(EBD) proportions the braking forcebetween the front and rear wheels ofthe van as required, in order to optimisebraking efficiency in all drivingsituations. In this way the systemprevents “overbraking” of the rearwheels, which could cause the tail tostart sliding. At the same time EBDputs less stress on the front brakes,which reduces the risk of fading dueto overheating.Brake Assist (BAS)In tests carried out in the drivingsimulator, our research engineersestablished that drivers do notapply the brakes vigorously enoughduring emergency braking. Thisfinding led them to develop BrakeAssist. From the speed at whichthe brake pedal is depressed, BrakeAssist is able to detect a situationwhere emergency braking is required.In such a situation the system automaticallyincreases braking power,aided by the anti-lock braking system(ABS) which prevents the wheelsfrom locking up.Start-off AssistStart-off Assist, an integral part of theESP, makes it easier to start off onuphill slopes: after the brake pedal isreleased, the brake pressure is maintainedfor approximately two seconds,allowing the driver to move their footfrom the brake pedal to the acceleratorwithout having to worry about thevehicle starting to roll. Start-off Assistis activated on uphill slopes of approx.4 % or steeper. It is not activatedwhen starting off on the flat or on adownhill slope.ESP Trailer Stability AssistThis system complements ADAPTIVEESP and enhances driving safetywhen towing a trailer, selectively brakingthe wheels of the towing vehicleand reducing engine torque when thetrailer fishtails, thereby helping thedriver to stabilise the combination. Ifthe system intervenes several timesin succession, the braking actionbecomes increasingly stronger, resultingin a significant reduction in vehiclespeed.40Glossary

This is achievedthanks to the fact that all the brakelights start to flash in the event ofemergency braking at speeds above50 km/h, thus warning followingtraffic and shortening the reactiontimes of the drivers. If the vehicleis braked to a standstill from a speedof more than 70 km/h, the hazardwarning lights are activated automatically.Windowbags and thorax bagsThe Sprinter can be equipped withwindowbags and thorax bags tocomplement the driver and co-driverfront airbags. In a severe side impact,the windowbag serves to increasethe degree of protection available forthe head of the occupant on theimpact side. It deploys in the area ofthe side windows. Housed in the outsidebolsters of the seat backrests,thorax bags are designed to provideincreased protection for the thoraxof the seat occupant.Note:Airbags in no way exemptoccupants from the need to fastentheir seat belts correctly beforeevery journey as an airbag can onlydevelop its full protection potentialif the occupant is wearing the seatbelt correctly.PARKTRONICThe PARKTRONIC parking aid assiststhe driver when parking and manoeuvringwith little room to spare. Thesystem, which operates on the echosounder principle, automaticallywarns the driver if it detects that thevehicle is close to an obstacle infront of or behind the vehicle. Thewarning is provided initially in theform of a visual display in the centreof the instrument panel (when mov -ing forward) and in the exterior mirror(when reversing). If the gap contin -ues to decrease, an audible warningis also activated.ECO start/stop functionOnce the driver has activated the systemwhilst the engine is running, thesystem switches off the engine automaticallyunder certain conditionsas soon as the vehicle has been stationaryfor more than three secondswithout a gear being engaged or theclutch pedal being pressed. At the end of its long working life, you can return your Sprinter to us for environment-friendly disposal in accordancewith the EU End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive. But that day lies a long way off. The take-back of end-of-life vehicles applies in accordance with national regulationsfor vehicles with a perm. GVW of up to 3.5 t. The Sprinter has met the statutory regulations governing the suitability of the vehicleʼs design for reuse and recyclingfor a number of years now. A network of vehicle take-back depots and dismantlers has been established which will process your vehicle in an environment-friendlymanner. The ways in which both vehicles and parts can be recovered are subject to ongoing development and improvement.
