Day 4 Tuesday May 7, 2013Today is an early start. You will be picked up at 6.00am from the villa and transferred to Sembalun to begin your3 day Mt Rinjani trek. Although not particularly well known, in our opinion this is one of the very best shortadventure treks in Asia. We will provide you with an expert guide, porters, good food and first class campingequipmen - for example you will have proper mountain tents and airbeds. Your guide will arrange for the NationalPark entry tickets and brief you on the route, the sights, as well as the rubbish management and safetyprocedures.Mount Rinjani is considered sacred by pilgrims in both Bali and Lombok and it is believed that the local Godsreside on the summit. It is for these reasons that the trek up Mount Rinjani, for many people, is far more importantthan just the climb itself. The trek starts with a gentle ascent through open grassland used by the local villagers to graze their cattle. Afterthree hours you will reach a resting post at 1500m with wonderful views of the summit. After a further hour theclimb steepens through the pine-like casuarinas known locally as Cemara to the Sembalun crater rim at 2639m.Here you will make camp for the night. The views down into the crater are breathtaking, with the relatively new (itbegan to appear in 1942) smoldering cone of “Gunung Baru” rising from the depths of the lake, “Segara Anak”covers 1200 ha and at its deepest is 190m.Day 5: Wednesday May 8, 2013After breakfast you will proceed down to Mount Rinjani’s amazing crater lake. The trail is steep and takes two tothree hours. Hereyou will make camp for the second night. The sunsets over the Northern Gili islands and the view down into thecrater are wonderful.Day 6: Thursday May 9, 2013After watching the sunrise over the summit and a hearty breakfast you will descend down the long trail to Senaruvillage. Theaccommodation is simple but spotlessly clean and the surroundings are one of the most picturesque in Lombok.Day 7: Friday May 10, 2013Spend the day relaxing, swimming or exploring the local surroundings. If you are still feeling active it is possible to arrange an English speaking guide from the local village who will leadyou through beautiful rice terraces on a 2-3 hour hike (one way) to the thunderous Tiu Kelep waterfalls.
