AIM and SCOPEThe semi-acronym IMMURGU stands for Insular Medieval ManuscriptsReproduction Guide University of Utrecht. The Old-Irish word immurgu or immorromeans 'however, moreover, well, then, indeed' and the like, and is often used inmedieval Irish literature. The IMMURGU project is an aid for students and researchers of insular manuscriptsat the University of Utrecht. It provides them with an up-to-date list of all themanuscripts on microfilm, as photocopy, on the internet and as facsimiles that areavailable for study at the University Library, specifically the Library of the Faculty ofArts (University Library City Centre). It furthermore provides information about thewhereabouts of catalogues. The list is ordered according to the locality of its library.Access to manuscript materials is important for the study of 'insular' literature andalso images. Especially in the case of medieval Irish literature there are manyimportant manuscripts which are not available in a diplomatic edition, and there aremany texts which have not or inadequately been edited according to modernstandards. The availability of digitally scanned images on the internet, for exampleby ISOS (Irish Script of Screen) or the Bodleian Library in Oxford, is a great help tostudents and researchers. But not all manuscripts are available that way, nor arehard-copies always of a good enough quality to make study or transcription easy.Facsimiles, microfilms and photocopies of (parts of) manuscripts are thus stillimportant for the study of medieval insular literature. Most of the facsimiles at the Library of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Utrechtcome from the collection of A. G. van Hamel, who was the first professor of CelticStudies in the Netherlands from 1923 until his death in 1945. The microfilms ofmanuscripts of various libraries and photocopies from manuscripts of the NationalLibrary of Scotland in Edinburgh have been purchased from a grant from the boardof the UU Medieval Studies Prestige Masters in 2004. They have been selectedaccording to the importance of texts, whether in Irish and Hiberno-Latin, for thestudy of medieval Irish literature. In most cases these manuscripts contain textswhich have not yet been edited. Two microfilms come from a private collection. On the IMMURGU list all facsimiles and photocopies of insular manuscripts availableat the Library of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Utrecht are listed, and allmicrofilms of insular manuscripts, added with those manuscripts (in insular or otherscript) which happened to be on the same reels as the one which was purchased. The other manuscripts are also mentioned on the IMMURGU list, so that theiravailability is not hidden for those who wish to study them. Of the digital images ofmanuscript materials available on the internet, a selection is made of for examplethe material available on ISOS, since inclusion of all the material available on ISOSwould make the list too long for its present purposes. Most attention is given tomanuscripts with medieval Irish literature. The basic list on IMMURGU and its format were prepared by Sven Meeder from agrant from the board of the UU Medieval Studies Prestige Masters in 2005. It is theintention to keep the list on IMMURGU up to date, and add new purchases orwebsites if necessary. Basic information about insular script and how to transcribe it,and a list of insular manuscripts in the vernacular with their dates, scribes, contents

and secundary literature, may also be added to the project, provided there is time toproduce them. It is hoped that the IMMURGU project gives students and scholars thetools to work with insular manuscript materials and makes study of the medievalCeltic and related literatures easier. For relevant websites, see the Dutch website onInternetbronnen Keltisch. Finally a word on making copies of manuscript materials. All reproductions areavailable for private studies only, and it is only for this purpose that they are madeavailable by the Library of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Utrecht. Publicationof (parts of) manuscripts in books, journals, on the internet or any in other printedor digital manner is strictly forbidden without the permission of the library in whosekeeping the manuscript in question is, and who own the copyright thereof.
