RULE 3: FORFEITS, DEFAULTS, AND PROTESTS1. FORFEITS: If a team fails to appear for a scheduled game or match by game time, orfollowing the grace periods, a forfeit will be declared. If a team forfeits a contest, thecaptain’s student account will be charged a $20 forfeit fee, the team will be ineligible forpostseason competition, and the team may be dropped from the league if there is a waitlist team to replace them. A team with two forfeits will be automatically dropped fromthe league.2. DEFAULTS: If a team notifies the intramural office of their inability to field the requirednumber of participants for their game, no later than 2:00PM on the day of the contest, itwill be marked as a default. If a team has one less than the minimum number ofparticipants required to play signed in at game time or during the grace period, an on-sitedefault will be declared. A default/on-site default is an un-played game that is recorded asa loss with a sportsmanship rating of a 3 for the defaulting team. Once the default hasbeen requested, it cannot be overturned. No forfeit fine is charged to the defaulting team.3. GRACE PERIOD: Teams will be granted a 5 minute grace period from the original gametime if at least one player has signed in at game time. If the minimum number of playersrequired to start have signed in before the grace period has concluded, the game willbegin and the opposing team will be awarded 10 points. The game clock for the first halfwill be set at 13 minutes. If no players are signed in at game time, there is no graceperiod and the game will be declared a forfeit.4. OPTIONAL GRACE PERIOD: After the original grace period has expired, the opposingcaptain has the option of taking the win or waiting an additional 5 minutes. In the eventthe captain decides to wait, the decision is irreversible. If the minimum number of playersrequired to start are signed in before the optional grace period has expired, the game willbegin and the opposing team will be awarded an additional 10 points (total of 20 points).The game clock for the first half will be set at 8 minutes.5. PROTESTS: If a team wants to submit a protest, the team captain must stop playimmediately and notify the games officials and intramural sports manager. Theintramural sports manager will document the appeal and forward it to the intramuralsports Graduate Assistants or Coordinator if they cannot settle the protest on site. Teamscannot protest an official’s judgment.Spring 2014


RULE 4: PLAYING AREA AND EQUIPMENT1. PLAYING AREA: All games will be played in the Tennessee Recreational Center forStudents (TRECS) basketball courts or the Health and Physical Education Building (HPER)basketball courts.2. BENCHES: Players benches will be on opposite ends of the court. Teams shall warm upand shoot at the end of the court farthest from their own bench for the first half. Allspectators must be positioned near or seated in the bleachers on the end lines.3. <strong>BASKETBALL</strong>: Teams may furnish their own game ball or check-out a game ball at theWelcome Desk in the TRECS or office in the HPER. If a team wants to use their own gameball, it must be approved by the opposing team. If they are unable to agree, a basketballfrom the Intramural Sports Program will be the official game ball. The game officials shallbe the sole judge of any ball offered for play and may change the ball during play at theirdiscretion.4. JERSEYS/SHIRTS: All teams are required to furnish their own jerseys with numbers on theback. Pinnies will be provided to each team on site by the Intramural Sports Program.Participants wearing intramural sports pinnies are required to wear a shirt underneath thepinnie.5. SHOES: All players must wear athletic shoes. Tennis/running shoes are permitted. Spikes,screw in cleats, rubber molded cleats, and cleats with metal or ceramic exposed areprohibited. Boots and sandals are also prohibited.6. PADS/BRACES: No pads or braces may be worn above the waist. Leg and knee bracesmade of hard material must be covered on both sides and all edges with appropriateslow-recovery padding.Spring 2014


7. HEADWEAR: Players may not wear baseball style caps, bandannas with knots, or otherrigid headwear. Knit and stocking caps are permitted. Players may wear a headband nowider than two inches and made of non-abrasive cloth, elastic, fiber, soft leather, orrubber. Rubber or cloth elastic bands may be used to control hair.8. JEWELRY: No jewelry may be worn. Jewelry must be removed before the participant willbe allowed to participate. Medical alert bracelets are permitted but they must be tapeddown. Taping of all other jewelry is not permitted.9. BLOOD RULE: When a player is bleeding, has an open wound, or an excessive amount ofblood on his/her uniform the player will be directed to leave the game. The injured playeris not to return until the bleeding has stopped, the wound is covered, and the bloodyuniform is changed.10. The Intramural Sports Staff has the right to deem certain equipment unsafe or illegal.RULE 5: TIMING1. LENGTH OF GAME: The game shall consist of two halves of 18 minutes. The clock will stopfor all whistles in the last minute of the second half, team timeouts, official’s timeouts,and injuries. There is no overtime during the regular season.2. HALFTIME: There will be a 3 minute halftime.3. OVERTIME: Regular season games can end in a tie. Overtime will only be played duringthe postseason competition. Overtime procedures will be as followed:a. The overtime period will start with a jump ball.b. Overtime shall be a 2 minute period.c. The first minute of the overtime period will have a running clock.d. In the final minute of the overtime period, the clock will stop for all whistles.e. Teams will be given one time-out per overtime period (No time-outs carry over fromregulation or from one overtime period to another).f. All personal and team fouls carry over to the overtime period.g. Any subsequent overtimes will be one minute in length with the clock stopping on allwhistles.4. TIME-OUTS: Each team will receive 2 time-outs, each 1 minute in length.5. MERCY RULE: The game shall be over if a team is behind by:a. 50 points any time during the second halfb. 40 points or more with 10 minutes or less remainingc. 30 points or more with 5 minutes or less remainingSpring 2014


d. 20 points or more with 2 minutes or less remaininge. * The referees hold the right to end the game at any time they feel that the game hasbecome unsafe to continue. The losing team may also opt to end early if they nolonger wish to continue playing.RULE 6: PLAYING THE GAME1. JUMP BALL: The game shall begin with a jump ball between any 2 players, 1 from eachteam.2. SUBSTITUTION: A substitute who desires to enter shall report to the scorer, giving his/hernumber and wait for the official to beacon the player onto the court.3. FIFTH FOUL: Any player charged with a fifth foul shall be disqualified from the game.4. DOUBLE FOUL: A double foul (2 opponents committing personal fouls simultaneously) willnot result in the awarding of free throws. Both fouls will be entered in the book and theteam with the possession at the time of the infraction retains the ball.5. TECHNICAL FOULS: If a player/team is assessed a technical foul by the game officials, theopposing team will be awarded 2 points, possession of the ball at the mid court line, andany points from a successful shot made on the play.a. Individual Technical Fouls: 2 non-administrative technical fouls issued to one playerwill result in the ejection of that player.b. Team Technical Fouls: 3 non-administrative technical fouls issued to a team willresult in the immediate forfeiture of the game.c. Administrative Technical Fouls:i. Wearing improper attire.ii. Calling a time-out when you have zero remaining.iii. Having more than 5 members on the court during the game.iv. Entering the court without reporting to the scorekeeper and beingbeckoned in by the officials.6. INTENTIONAL FOULS: These are fouls in the official’s judgment that appear to bedesigned, premeditated, or excessive in nature. If a player is assessed an intentional foulby the game officials, the opposing team will be awarded 2 points, possession of the ballnearest to the spot of the foul, and any points from a successful shot made on the play.a. Intentional fouls include, but are not limited to:i. Contact that neutralizes an opponent’s obvious advantageous position.Spring 2014


ii. Contact away from the ball with an opponent who is clearly not involved with aplay.iii. Contact that is not a legitimate attempt to play the ball/player specificallydesigned to stop the clock or keep it from starting.iv. Excessive contact with an opponent while playing the ball.v. Contact with a thrower during a throw in.7. FLAGRANT FOULS: Flagrant fouls are violent or savage in nature. They will result in theimmediate ejection of the guilty player. If a player is assessed a technical foul by the gameofficials, the opposing team will be awarded 2 points, possession of the ball nearest to thespot of the foul, and any points from a successful shot made on the play. Flagrant foulsinclude, but are not limited to:a. Violent contact such as: striking, kicking, and kneeing.b. Extreme or persistent, vulgar, or abusive conduct at any time.c. Fighting.8. FREE THROW: During free throw attempts, a maximum of 6 players are permitted to lineup along the lane for rebounding.a. The bottom spaces (below the block) will remain vacant at all times.b. The defense must occupy the first space on each side above the block.c. The offense has the option to occupy the next lane space on each side (in the eventthe offense does not wish to occupy these lane spaces, the spaces will remainempty).d. The defense has the option to occupy the top lane space on each side (in the eventthe defense does not wish to occupy these lane spaces, the spaces will remainempty).e. No player may enter the lane until the free throw attempt has hit the rim.f. The remaining players from both teams not lined up along the lane must remainbehind the free throw line extended and behind the 3 point line until the ball hitsthe rim.9. BONUS FREE THROWS: These are awarded to the offended team following a commonpersonal fouls (except a team control foul) on and after the 7 th team foul of the half.a. For the 7 th , 8 th , and 9 th team fouls committed in the half, the shooter will shoot thebonus (1-and-1)b. For team fouls 10 and above, two shots will be awarded to the shooter for anycommon, non-player control foul.10. DUNKING/GRASPING RIM: Dunking will only be allowed during games. If done duringwarm-ups, the team will be assessed a technical foul.Spring 2014


11. INJURY: If the game is stopped due to an injured player, the player may not re-enter untilthe next legal substitution period unless the player’s team uses a time-out.RULE 7: COED MODIFICATIONS1. TEAM COMPOSITION: Each team will consist of 5 players are on the court. A minimum of4 players are required to start the game.a. 5 players are on the court – 2 males and 3 femalesb. 4 players are on the court – 2 males and 2 females or 1 male and 3 females2. Female scoring system is below:Coed - Female Scoring SystemMade shot inside the arc (2 pointer)Made shot outside the arc (3 pointer)3 points4 pointsShooting foul inside the arc (2 pointer)Shot missed3 free throwsShot made3 points + 1 free throwShooting fouled outside the arc (3 pointer)Shot missed4 free throwsShot made4 points + 1 free throwBonus Free ThrowsFemale player is fouled with her team in the bonus(7 th , 8 th , and 9 th team foul by the opposing team)2 free throws +(an additional free throwif 2nd free throw ismade)Female player is fouled with her team in the doublebonus (10 th and above team foul by the opposing team)3 free throws3. It is a violation for a male to block a shot attempted by a female. Blocking of a female’swill result in a goal-tending violation.4. Teams may choose to play with a regulation size men’s basketball or a regulation sizewomen’s basketball (28.5). If both teams cannot agree, a regulation size women’s ball willbe used.Spring 2014


RULE 8: SPORTSMANSHIP1. RATING: Each team will begin the contest with a 5 sportsmanship rating and shall be rated bythe officials at the end of the contest. The authority of the officials’ ratings exists prior to,during, and following all contests to which that official is assigned, and extends to all personson, at, or near the playing site. Sportsmanship ratings shall be marked on the score sheetprior to captain signing off on the score and sportsmanship rating.a. 5 – Excellent Sportsmanship: Players cooperate fully with the intramural sportsstaff and opposing team members. If necessary, the captain converses calmly withofficials about rule interpretations and calls.b. 4 - Good Sportsmanship: Team members verbally complain about some decisionsmade by the intramural sports staff and/or show minor dissent which may or maynot merit a conduct warning (unsportsmanlike penalty / technical foul / yellowcards / etc.). Teams that receive one conduct warning will receive no higher than a"4" rating.c. 3 - Mediocre Sportsmanship: Team constantly comments to the intramural sportsstaff or the opposing team. The team captain exhibits little or no control overteammates or him/herself. Teams that receive one ejection or two conductwarnings (unsportsmanlike penalty / technical foul / yellow cards / etc.) willreceive no higher than a “3” rating.d. 2 - Below Average Sportsmanship: Team constantly comments to the intramuralsports staff or the opposing team. The team captain exhibits little or no controlover teammates or him/herself. Teams that receive one ejection and one conductwarning or a combination of three conduct warnings (unsportsmanlike penalty /technical foul / yellow cards / etc.) will receive no higher than a "2" rating and thegame will be forfeited.e. 1 - Unacceptable Sportsmanship: Team is completely uncooperative. Captain hasno control over teammates and/or him/herself. Any team that receives twoejections or four conduct warnings (unsportsmanlike penalty / technical foul /yellow cards / etc.) will receive a "1" rating and the game and season will beforfeited.Spring 2014
