I could not have asked fora better four years at the Institute. For me, it was the people around every daywho made my experience so fulfilling. The teachers, coaches, and kids at De LaSalle are good people and make the days pleasant. The atmosphere is unique at our schoolbecause we are so diverse and we excel academically and athletically.Personally, I was involved in football all four years and basketball and baseball freshmanyear. I was also a member of the National Honor Society my senior year. This is whatmakes “De” such a fun place to be. The people at De La Salle are also great in preparingtheir students for the future.I am attending the University of Illinois next year because of the help I received at De LaSalle. In college, I’m going to feel out some classes and make sure I choose the right majorbefore I declare. This doesn’t just apply to me, but to the entire Class of 2010 who haveused De La Salle to set up promising plans for their futures.I ensure all that our class has made the De La Salle men proud. I am extremely honored tobe valedictorian of such a great class. Congratulations to all.Institute Campus SalutatorianThe valedictorian at De La Salle’s Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women, Elizabeth Humphrey is graduating from De La Sallewith a 4.935 grade-point average in the Honors Program and ranking No. 1 in the 113-member Class of 2010.Elizabeth, who came to De La Salle from Dirksen Middle School in Calumet City, IL, will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick,ME where she hopes to study Arabic, Spanish and Photography. While a student at De La Salle, Elizabeth participated in theNational Honor Society, REACH Club, Peer Ministry and Spanish Club, as well as being a member of the tennis team and servingas a writing center tutor. Here is her reflection on what being the valedictorian in the Class of 2010 at the Lourdes Hall Campus means to her:When I first came to De La Salle, some staff members already knew my name! Itook this as a sign that I made the right decision to come to De La Salle. I metsome great people who made high school better for me. I was able to be myselfsince I entered just knowing my sister, Gabrielle Humphrey ’08, who had decided to transferthat same year.Getting more involved in school and participating in things such as Peer Ministry, NationalHonor Society, which I was Vice President, and various other activities, I got to meet morepeople and also had an appreciation for De La Salle. The 15 miles to and from school were worth it. I got a better education than I would haveif I stayed in my city’s public school district. I also stepped out of my comfort zone tointeract and grow friendships with people of a different racial background. I became a partof a community not only at De La Salle, but also in LINK Unlimited, the organization thathelped me foster my education at De.Valedictorian Elizabeth Humphrey delivers herremarks at the Young Women’s graduation.Being valedictorian is a great accomplishment for me because I feel that all my hard workhas not been in vain. I feel more proud of the fact that I had many of my peers supporting me, telling me that I would make it to the end. Forthat, I love them dearly.Everything that I have gone through during my four years of high school has prepared me for the academics, diversity, and also obstaclesthat I will face while going to college in Maine. I will appreciate everyone who has helped me make it to where I have gotten, and will alsoappreciate De La Salle for helping to develop me into the person I am today. The salutatorian at De La Salle’s Institute Campus for Young Men, John Zackrison attended Francis Xavier WardeElementary School in Chicago. Graduating with a 4.824 GPA in the Honors Program and ranking No. 2 in the 173-memberClass of 2010, Zackrison will attend the University of Chicago in the fall. Here is his reflection on what being the salutatorian in the Class of 2010 at the Institute Campus means to him:Brittany PhillipsLourdes Hall SalutatorianIcame to De La Salle three years ago, a disinherited Diaspora student of sorts, stunned by the closing of Archbishop Quigley and a little frightened at theprospect of having to restart my high school career. In De La Salle, I found aschool, a challenge, and most importantly, a home.Though it was a difficult transition going from such a small school to a relatively largeone, the students and staff of De La Salle were more than accepting of all the Quigleytransfers. It was not long before I was in all sorts of sports and activities including CrossCountry, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Peer Mediation, National Honor Society, andPeer Ministry. The people of De La Salle, in true Lasallian fashion, quickly made me one of their own,and for that I am eternally grateful. While De La Salle has made me a better scholar and athlete, De La Salle has mostimportantly taught me to excel as a human being, from helping the needy to helping thepeople who sit next to me. It has shown me the value of hard work on the field, in theclassroom, and in the community.Salutatorian John Zackrison delivers his remarksat the Young Men’s graduation. The salutatorian at De La Salle’s Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women, Brittany Phillips attended Mark Sheridan Math andScience Academy in Chicago. Graduating with a 4.799 GPA in the Honors Program and ranking No. 2 in the 113-member Class of2010, Phillips will attend DePaul University in the fall. Here is her reflection on what being the salutatorian in the Class of 2010 at the Lourdes Hall Campus means to her:During my sophomore year, I decided to take a big step; one that I am proud to say thatI have taken. I began to involve myself in De La Salle’s after-school theater program,Theatre 100.At first, I was very hesitant to take that step. I did not think that I would be very good at it,even though I was looking for a way to express myself. After much encouragement fromfriends and family, I finally took the chance, and I do not regret it for a single moment. In joining the various groups offered in this program, such as Sword Combat and CreativeDrama, I was able to expand my network of friends and bond with the teachers whomoderated each group that I was a member of. I am very grateful for the support that each ofthem has offered me through the years – creative or otherwise.Though I now leave the wirelessly connected halls of the Institute Campus for the brick and ivy of the University of Chicago, I carry theLasallian spirit instilled within me as I journey on. I extend humblest thanks and deep admiration for all the people connected with theDe La Salle community.Brittany Phillips proudly displays her diploma nextto Young Women’s principal Diane Brown and herfather, Frank, a Class of 1982 graduate.I went from being terrified of stepping on a stage, to feeling at home on one. From anexperience such as this, I have this to say to everyone: No matter what it is that you arepursuing, do not sell yourselves short. With hard work, dedication, and determination, you canfinally attain what it is that you are seeking to accomplish.2 Academics Academics 3

Feature StoryCollege-Boundwith Confidence:A Snapshot of the Honors Senior Dissertation ExperienceCo-Authored by Sarah Reczek and Margaret Grabowski ‘06The Honors Program Senior Dissertationproject is one of the many challengingassignments our Meteors tackle during theirstudies at the Institute that truly preparesthem for their future college experience. This finalcomponent of the Honors Program curriculum affordsstudents the opportunity to conduct an independentstudy research project, prepare a lengthy research papercommunicating their findingsand give an oral defense oftheir research to their teacheradvisor, academic deansand other faculty, staff andstudents who attend the publicdefense. While the idea of the paperand the defense at firstseemed overwhelming forsome of the students, most ofthem look back on the projectas quite an accomplishment.Elizabeth Galka summarizedit best while rememberingwhen she first received thedissertation assignment: “I wasintimidated about it because Ihad never written such a long paper! It didn’t seemrealistic.” Elizabeth not only successfully producedthat lengthy of a writing piece, but she finished witha sense of confidence for her future studies. “[Thedissertation project] helped me a lot and prepared mewell for college, since I know that the research papersare well over 15 pages in college,” Elizabeth said.Louis Perez echoed a similar confidence with regardto his preparedness for college after his dissertation. “Ifeel really prepared for college because of the SeniorDissertation project,” he said. “Doing another 25-pagepaper now doesn’t seem like a big deal.”2010 Valedictorian Elizabeth Humphreypresents her dissertation on bipolar disorder. In addition to mastering the college-level writing andresearch, Louis and his Honors classmates deepenedtheir knowledge of subject matters that were importantto them. Louis discovered in his sophomore year at DeLa Salle that he wanted to pursue a career in marketingand advertising, but wanted to push himself to gaindeeper knowledge about the subject. After completinghis dissertation research on the distinctions betweenmarketing and advertising andtheir effects on society, Louisis fully confident to pursue hisdream profession. “I have all thisinformation about marketing andadvertising that I feel prepared tomajor in this field once I get tothe college of my choice,” saidLouis.Honors students from the Classof 2010 chose topics that werecreative and inspiring, selectingsubject matters that trulysparked their interest as areas toexplore. Alberto Jimenez choseto research the topic of politicalheterogeneity of Americanpolitics and “the controlling biasin Congress.” When asked why he chose this topic,Alberto stated how he “always had a curiosity aboutpolitics and how members of Congress debate andinteract with each other. I wanted to get more familiarwith politics and become a more aware citizen.” Notonly did Alberto prepare himself for college by “furtherfamiliarizing myself with a college-like atmosphere, from the lengthy research and writing to getting usedto presenting my findings to a crowd,” but he felt thathis topic gave him insight into something that otherswould get at an older age, claiming that “it has reallychanged me morally.”For many of the seniors, the dissertation project grew to become more than a research paper assignment to completein order to graduate with Honors. Their experience impacted who they are as individuals and the thoughts andopinions they now carry into life beyond high school. For Galka, she became a more informed citizen as she gaineda better understanding of economics, history and the government from her research topic “Social and PsychologicalImpacts of the Great Depression and the Economic Crisis of 2009.” “This project helped me learn about the part Ican play in the government and the economy at large,” Galka said.Elizabeth Humphrey chose to research bipolardisorder as her dissertation project, motivatedby a family member who has the disorder. Shefollowed her personal passion to learn moreabout something important to her. In the process,Humphrey realized that “the most important thingfor me was that I believed in what I was doing,I wanted to finish something I started, and I wasdoing it for myself. I was driven more to just do itfor me and what I would learn in the process andteach others as opposed to getting to graduate withHonors. I was able to have a better understandingof bipolar disorder, so that I could then relatebetter and help my family members. I feel proudthat I did all of that hard work…and yes, I willnow graduate with Honors.”Christian Leonexplains his researchfindings on Mexican art.As all of our seniors proudly marchedon Graduation Day, the entire schoolcommunity looked on with pride at theirachievements over the past four years.Looking ahead to college and career, DeLa Salle graduates can confidently taketheir next steps because of the academicpreparation and personal developmentthey have experienced at De La Salle.10 Feature StoryFeature Story 11
