The Dead Sea Rift as a natural laboratory for earthquake behavior ...

International WorkshopField TripThe Dead Sea Rift as anatural laboratory forearthquake behavior:prehistorical, historical andrecent seismicity16 th - 23 rd February 2009In Israel and JordanScopeThe Workshop is aimed at improving our understanding of theseismic hazards with an emphasis on the study of the environmentaleffects of earthquakes and on the application of the ESI 2007intensity scale. During the field trip the participants will be able todirectly observe and discuss the unique geological andarchaeological field evidence of large devastating seismic eventsfound along the Dead Sea Rift. This Workshop will provide anopportunity to bring together geologists, paleoseismologists, archaeoseismologists, seismologists and engineers, in one of themost studied seismic provinces on Earth, to discuss and transfermethodologies in the area of seismic hazard assessment. It is thehope of the organizers that this Workshop will:• Advance the knowledge of the recurrence of large devastatingearthquakes (>6 M) throughout this region.• Refine the methodology for a better evaluation of macroseismicintensity based on ground effects and cultural materialevidence.• Contribute to the recent development of a multi-proxy empiricalworld database on earthquakes ground effects that can be usedand incorporated into seismic hazard assessment practices.Organized by the Geological Survey of Israel(Convener: Rivka Amit)INQUA Paleoseismology Subcommission(Chairman: Alessandro M. Michetti)These objectives represent some of the most important researchchallenges for earth scientists and engineers in the next decades. In collaboration with:UNESCOHebrew University in JerusalemThe Israel Geological SocietyUniversity of Missouri, Kansas City USAIGCP 567 Earthquake ArchaeologySafed Scientific Workshop ProgramIsrael National Earthquake Preparedness CommitteeWe look forward to meeting you in the Dead Sea RiftAlessandro M.
