CLASS 1 SUPPORTS THE QATARORPHAN FOUNDATIONAt the beginning of 2008 the International Offshore Team Association (IOTA) reached atwo-year agreement with the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) to launch “Class 1for Dhreima” – an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation.HE Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the QMSF, was instrumental inencouraging Class 1 – a sport in which he has played a leading role since 2003 – tobecome an active vehicle to raise awareness of the foundation. “In presenting thisinitiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever form or however extreme, cansupport the values and the importance of the activities of an organisation such as theQatar Orphan Foundation.”During the course of the initiative, Class 1 and Dhreima have developed a series ofactivities and events during Grand Prix weekends, with the purpose of highlighting theactivities of Dhreima and finding synergy with similar organisations based in countriesthat host Class 1 events. The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10 June 2003 under thepatronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairman of theSupreme Council. “We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our communityvalues of solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable of providing allthe support the children need,” said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman of the Dhreima Board, adding, “and we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected tosupport the Foundation.”DECEMBER / page 03

PREVIEWAfter five GrandsPrix and eightraces, the fightfor the covetedClass 1 World titlehas come down tothe wire and willbe decided thisweekend, 10 -12December, in thefinal two races ofthe season in theEmirates/Dubai DutyFree DUBAI GrandPrix. With the Victory Team having already secured aremarkable ninth Class 1 World title, the onlyunanswered question is which of the Dubai-basedteam’s two thoroughbreds will emerge victorious ontheir home waters and in front of a partisan crowdand lift the trophy - Fazza or Victory 1?Just eight points separate Fazza and Victory 1 inwhat has been a titanic struggle for supremacy allseason, with the Championship lead changing handsrace-by-race.Championship leaders, Fazza’s Arif Al Zafeen andNadir Bin Hendi, will start as marginal favouritesand hold the bragging rights for race wins this yearwith six, but Victory 1’s Mohammad Al Mehairi andJean-Marc Sanchez, with two wins under their belts, put one over their team-mates in Italy to take theEuropean Championship. Each outfit knows it can beat the other and that eachis capable of lifting the crown, and with Victory Teamgeneral manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, stating thatthere are no team orders, Fazza and Victory 1 are setfor one last throw of the dice and the stage is set fora winner-takes-all scenario.DECEMBER / page 06

From the timeless tranquillity of the desert to the lively bustle of the souk, to thecalm waters of the Arabian Gulf, the Emirate of Dubai offers a kaleidoscope ofactivities for visitors and residents. Lying on the blue waters of the southern Gulfand backing onto the majestic desert, Dubai offers visitors year-round sunshineand five-star luxury... plus the adventure of a unique Arabian experience. Dubai –one of the seven emirates which constitute the United Arab Emirates – is a placeof fascinating contrasts, a distinctive blend of a modern city and timeless desert, east and west, old and new.Dubai is a dynamic international business centre as well as a laid-back touristescape; it is a city where the sophistication of the 21st century walks hand in handwith the simplicity of a bygone era, where a diversity of activities have given it itsunique flavour and personality: a cosmopolitan society with a culture deeply rootedin the traditions of Arabia.A century ago, it was a tranquil town whose coral-and-gypsum huts housedBedouin traders and pearl divers. Today, commerce is truly international andscience-fiction skyscrapers stand alongside the mosques and wind towers of oldDubai. Dubai has many jewels in its crown, not least the unparalleled architecturalinnovations that confirm Dubai as a world leader; from the Burj Al Arab, the PalmIslands developments and The World – a series of man-made islands in the shapeof the continents – to what will perhaps become Dubai’s most symbolic structure, the Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building.DECEMBER / page 19
