Junee High SchoolPrincipals Message…Reflecting on the first semesterThere are a number of moments during the year forreflection and the end of term is certainly one of those. As we work hard to bring the first semester to asuccessful end, it is important that students reflect onthe achievements they have made over the past sixmonths. We encourage each student to consider howthe year is progressing and then plan to maintainstrengths and work to improve weaknesses.Lions Honours AssemblyOn Monday, 24 June starting at 10:30am we will holdour first Lions Credit Assembly for 2013. This is a short,30 minutes, celebratory assembly which recognises allthose students who have achieved Credit Awards,Distinction Awards or Credit Certificate (status). Parentsand family are invited and welcome to join us and stayfor a tea and/or coffee afterwards. The Credit Certificate is awarded to those students whohave reached Credit Status on the school's HonoursSystem. This is the first major step a student can maketowards higher levels of achievement; Distinction, HighDistinction and then the ultimate success of Honours.Aspire UC (University of Canberra)We had two representatives from UC speak with ourstudents on Thursday last week and they wereenormously complimentary about the attitude of andresponse from our students. They were particularlyappreciative of Year 9 and 10s. However, all studentsare to be congratulated on the wonderful feedbackthat we have received.Alumni SuccessIt is wonderful to hear about the success of paststudents. Rebecca Spink who left Junee High School in2000 is now a teacher at Aitken Creek Primary Schoolin Victoria. Her passion for technology resulted in herreceiving state-wide recognition. While Rebecca hasbeen teaching for only five years, she has obviouslymade a real mark on her students‟ sense of self andachievement. She was recently awarded VictorianPrimary Teacher of the Year.We congratulate Rebecca on this wonderfulachievement.School UniformIt may surprise you to hear how often people whocome into our school comment on our students‟wearing of the uniform. Generally this is positive but asthe colder weather sets in we have too many studentswho are wearing inappropriate, non‐uniform clothing.Hoodies and multi‐coloured tops over or under theschool shirt are not acceptable. Unsafe shoes shouldnever be worn to school. There are a range of reasonswhy we encourage our students to wear the correctuniform. However, we recognise that some familiesmay not be able to afford the correct winter uniform. Ifthis is the case, we would ask you to get in touch withthe school so that we can support you to support us.Elective FeesWe do need to ask a huge favour from our parentbody. There is a common misunderstanding about thecosts for electives that students take in Years 7 throughto Year 12; that the fees are not mandatory.Unfortunately, this is not the case. No school isprovided with the funds to provide the students withthe materials to offer courses such as Food Tech,Hospitality, Metal and Timber Tech, Visual Arts andmany others. If you have received an invoice in themail for the course fees, we really do need you to paythese fees as soon as possible. If you have difficultymanaging those costs please contact the school sothat we may discuss ways of supporting your child.Curriculum UpdateUnfortunately we have not been able secure anadditional Metals and Wood teacher for 2013. We haveensured that this position will be filled at the end ofthe year. However, in the meantime, we have beenextremely fortunate to have Ms Prue Asmus join ourteam for the remainder of the year. There will be aremix of technics courses covered in Years 7 and 8 andthe Year 9/10 Metal class has been rebadged as theynow undertake Marine and Aquatic Technology.Year 12 ReportsYear 12 reports have been issued today. While there isgood number of students who achieved pleasingresults, there is also a number who now need tocommit themselves to the very worthwhile challengethat a quality HSC sets. You don't have to be great to get started, but youhave to get started to be great.Mr Matthew BrownPrincipalPage 3

This is aDepartment of Education and Communitiesrequirement, which protects both you, as a volunteerdriver and the children travelling with you.The following excerpt comes from this policy:9.3.1 The transporting of students in the cars of staffmembers, parents, caregivers, volunteers and otherstudents should only occur in those circumstanceswhere there is no feasible option available to providealternative transportation. This may only occur underthe following conditions:a) Written permission from the parent(s) orcaregiver(s) of the students(s) being transported isobtainedb) The driver is licensed and, if issued with aprovisional licence, complies with any relevant peerpassenger conditionsc) The vehicle is registeredd) The number of passengers in the vehicle doesnot exceed the number of seatbeltse) Current driver‟s licence and car registrationdetails are sighted by the school prior to givingpermission for students to be transported in thevehicle. Please note: Once you have brought your originaldocuments to school and a copy has been made, yourpaperwork is then current for all further excursionsuntil the expiry dates on your licence or registrationare reached.Mrs Kelly RichardsSchool Admin ManagerPage 4

Junee High SchoolSport UpdateBill Turner Cup Soccer (Under 15s Girls andBoys)On 17 May Junee hosted the first round of Bill TurnerCup Soccer against Temora, Young and Tumut HighSchools. Both the boys and girls‟ teams played well againstTemora, with the girls making light work to make itthrough to the second round against Young High. Theboys had a more difficult task, after giving up a 2-0halftime lead they held on to finish 2-2 at the end ofnormal time. The game went into a “drop-off” where aplayer had to leave the field every 5 minutes untilsomeone scored. Eventually Junee prevailed with abrilliant strike from Justin Jenkins late in extra time.Unfortunately the boys had a tougher task againstYoung High, going down 4-1 in tough conditions. Theyheld on strongly in the first half to be tied 1-1 athalftime but unfortunately their defence could not holdon. The best for the boys were Justin Jenkins, DamonJackson and Braiden Philipse. The most exciting game of the day was saved for thegirls‟ second round against Young High, as they heldon for a 1-1 draw at the end of normal time, to go intoa “drop-off” as well. Some strong defence and talentedgoal-keeping by Hannah Turner and Abbie Foley keptJunee in the game. Some nervous moments passed asboth teams had players drop off the field every 5minutes, and eventually making it through 20 minutesof extra-time without a goal scored. This resulted in apenalty shoot-out with the remaining seven playerslining up to compete and hope for some luck. After anintense round where all players had a shot and therewas still no difference between the teams, Abbie Foleylined up for her second shot to win the game. Withnerves of steel she easily slotted the goal, after alsogoal-keeping during the shoot-out, creating a massivecheer from the crowd who had remained to watch theend result. This exciting win saw the girls travel to Cootamundraon June 3 to play Cootamundra High in the next round.Again the defence was the key for Junee High, with thesenior players of Nastarsha, Chloe, Tegan and Abbiedetermined to step up and lead the way!Unfortunately the team lost the game 1-0 despitegreat resilience to continually defend the goal. In thesecond half, Junee certainly looked the more likelyteam to score, creating several chances in the final 10minutes and never giving up.This team should be very proud of making it this far, asthere were only a handful of regular soccer players. Allplayers showed great improvement between the firstgame against Temora and the final game againstCootamundra. The team spirit was extremely positive, with all players contributing to the success of the teamand senior players demonstrating leadership todevelop the less experienced players. It was a pleasure taking both of these teams torepresent Junee High, as they represented the schoolwith great skills and passion. Well done!Zone AthleticsOn 20 May, students represented the school at ZoneAthletics in Temora. Despite some poor conditions attimes, all students who came away represented theschool in a very positive manner. Most studentsparticipated in as many events as they could, while thesportsmanship of all involved was to be commended. The students who made it through to the RiverinaAthletics Carnival in Albury on the 26 July are Billie-Rose Deacon (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Justin Jenkins(High Jump) and Andreas Shepherd (1500m, LongJump). Congratulations and good luck at the next level!Riverina NewsThis week (2-6 June) Miss Fritsch coached the OpenGirls‟ Riverina Touch Team, which included Junee Highstudent Elisha McDermott.Next week (18-20 June) Mr Roberts will coach theOpen Boys‟ Riverina Touch Team, which will includeJunee High student Liam Sweeney.Thank youMr Luke RobertsPDHPEJunee High would like to thank CathyPasslow for her time and effortdemonstrating the art of hand massage.Students will use this skill when they visitCooinda Court as part of their communityservice.Page 6
