Junee High SchoolPrincipals Message…Reflecting on the first semesterThere are a number of moments during the year forreflection and the end of term is certainly one of those.As we work hard to bring the first semester to asuccessful end, it is important that students reflect onthe achievements they have made over the past sixmonths. We encourage each student to consider howthe year is progressing and then plan to maintainstrengths and work to improve weaknesses.Lions Honours AssemblyOn Monday, 24 June starting at 10:30am we will holdour first Lions Credit Assembly for 2013. This is a short,30 minutes, celebratory assembly which recognises allthose students who have achieved Credit Awards,Distinction Awards or Credit Certificate (status). Parentsand family are invited and welcome to join us and stayfor a tea and/or coffee afterwards.The Credit Certificate is awarded to those students whohave reached Credit Status on the school's HonoursSystem. This is the first major step a student can maketowards higher levels of achievement; Distinction, HighDistinction and then the ultimate success of Honours.Aspire UC (University of Canberra)We had two representatives from UC speak with ourstudents on Thursday last week and they wereenormously complimentary about the attitude of andresponse from our students. They were particularlyappreciative of Year 9 and 10s. However, all studentsare to be congratulated on the wonderful feedbackthat we have received.Alumni SuccessIt is wonderful to hear about the success of paststudents. Rebecca Spink who left Junee High School in2000 is now a teacher at Aitken Creek Primary Schoolin Victoria. Her passion for technology resulted in herreceiving state-wide recognition. While Rebecca hasbeen teaching for only five years, she has obviouslymade a real mark on her students‟ sense of self andachievement. She was recently awarded VictorianPrimary Teacher of the Year.We congratulate Rebecca on this wonderfulachievement.School UniformIt may surprise you to hear how often people whocome into our school comment on our students‟wearing of the uniform. Generally this is positive but asthe colder weather sets in we have too many studentswho are wearing inappropriate, non‐uniform clothing.Hoodies and multi‐coloured tops over or under theschool shirt are not acceptable. Unsafe shoes shouldnever be worn to school. There are a range of reasonswhy we encourage our students to wear the correctuniform. However, we recognise that some familiesmay not be able to afford the correct winter uniform. Ifthis is the case, we would ask you to get in touch withthe school so that we can support you to support us.Elective FeesWe do need to ask a huge favour from our parentbody. There is a common misunderstanding about thecosts for electives that students take in Years 7 throughto Year 12; that the fees are not mandatory.Unfortunately, this is not the case. No school isprovided with the funds to provide the students withthe materials to offer courses such as Food Tech,Hospitality, Metal and Timber Tech, Visual Arts andmany others. If you have received an invoice in themail for the course fees, we really do need you to paythese fees as soon as possible. If you have difficultymanaging those costs please contact the school sothat we may discuss ways of supporting your child.Curriculum UpdateUnfortunately we have not been able secure anadditional Metals and Wood teacher for 2013. We haveensured that this position will be filled at the end ofthe year. However, in the meantime, we have beenextremely fortunate to have Ms Prue Asmus join ourteam for the remainder of the year. There will be aremix of technics courses covered in Years 7 and 8 andthe Year 9/10 Metal class has been rebadged as theynow undertake Marine and Aquatic Technology.Year 12 ReportsYear 12 reports have been issued today. While there isgood number of students who achieved pleasingresults, there is also a number who now need tocommit themselves to the very worthwhile challengethat a quality HSC sets.You don't have to be great to get started, but youhave to get started to be great.Mr Matthew BrownPrincipalPage 3
