<strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gThe role <strong>of</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> contemporary medic<strong>in</strong>e has evolved considerably over the pastdecades. Computers and other high-tech devices are essential <strong>in</strong> hospitals, rehabilitationcentres and private medical practices. Moreover, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g breakthroughs have <strong>in</strong>creasedour fundamental <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the function<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the human body, tissue generation andregeneration, physiological processes and locomotion.The <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g provides students with a state-<strong>of</strong>-the-artoverview <strong>of</strong> all areas <strong>of</strong> biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g: biomechanics, biomaterials, medical sensorsand signal process<strong>in</strong>g, medical imag<strong>in</strong>g and tissue eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The teach<strong>in</strong>g curriculumbuilds on the top-class research conducted by the staff, most <strong>of</strong> whom are members <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Leuven</strong> Medical Technology Centre. This network facilitates <strong>in</strong>dustrial fellowships forour students and coord<strong>in</strong>ates design projects and <strong>Master</strong>’s theses completed <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustryand <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognised research labs.<strong>Biomedical</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers are tra<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>in</strong>tegrate eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g science with basic medical knowledge.This competence is developed <strong>in</strong> coursework, practical exercises, <strong>in</strong>teractive sessions, a designproject and a <strong>Master</strong>’s thesis project. Upon graduat<strong>in</strong>g, biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eers are employed<strong>in</strong> the medical device <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>in</strong> hospitals, research centres and <strong>in</strong> government. The broadtechnological education also makes biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eers attractive to various classical<strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors.Admission requirementsThe follow<strong>in</strong>g candidates are eligible for direct admission to the programme:• Graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>KU</strong> <strong>Leuven</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programme witha sub-specialisation <strong>in</strong> either mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g or electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g• Holders <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Master</strong>’s degree <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from a partner <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>of</strong> the<strong>KU</strong> <strong>Leuven</strong> Association, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g holders <strong>of</strong> a degree <strong>in</strong> electromechanicaleng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g or electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gHolders <strong>of</strong> a Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> mechanical, electrical and biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g notissued by <strong>KU</strong> <strong>Leuven</strong> may be admitted to the programme at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the PermanentEducation Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The PermanentEducation Committee can impose a preparatory programme <strong>of</strong> 6 or 12 ECTS (to be<strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Master</strong>’s programme) or a preparatory programme <strong>of</strong> up to 60 ECTS.


Pr<strong>of</strong>ileThe ideal candidate has a broad technological background, preferably comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g basicelements from mechanical and electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The student has an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>eand <strong>in</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> medical treatments and healthcare <strong>in</strong> general. By the end<strong>of</strong> the programme, the graduate will have acquired:• a basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> anatomy, physiology and biochemistry,• the competence to translate eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g knowledge <strong>in</strong>to the design and production<strong>of</strong> medical devices and processes,• the competence to apply eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g knowledge for the advancement <strong>of</strong> scienceand technology, both <strong>in</strong> an academic context and <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dustrial context,• management skills and skills to act as an <strong>in</strong>tegrator between eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g scienceand medical/cl<strong>in</strong>ical science and practice.In Belgium, graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong> thedegree <strong>of</strong> ‘Burgerlijk <strong>in</strong>genieur’.Study<strong>in</strong>g abroadThe Faculty <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>KU</strong> <strong>Leuven</strong> is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> several Erasmus exchange programmes.For the <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, this means that the student can followone or two semesters <strong>of</strong> the first or second phase at a number <strong>of</strong> selected universitiesabroad. An <strong>in</strong>dustrial fellowship is possible for three or six ECTS either between the Bachelor’sand the <strong>Master</strong>’s programme, or between the two phases <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Master</strong>’s programme.Students are also encouraged to consider the fellowships and short courses <strong>of</strong>fered by BEST(Board <strong>of</strong> European Students <strong>of</strong> Technology) and through ATHENS. <strong>KU</strong> <strong>Leuven</strong> organisesa jo<strong>in</strong>t biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programme with the Université Catholique de Louva<strong>in</strong> thatleads to a dual degree from both universities. The Faculty <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Science</strong> is part<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational networks CESAER, CLUSTER and T.I.M.E.


ProgrammeThree courses provide the students with basic medical knowledge on anatomy andfunction <strong>of</strong> the human body. The core <strong>of</strong> the programme consists <strong>of</strong> biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gcourses that cover the entire range <strong>of</strong> contemporary biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g: biomechanics,biomaterials, medical imag<strong>in</strong>g, biosensors, biosignal process<strong>in</strong>g, medical device designand regulatory affairs. Elective courses allow the student to broaden and deepen his/herknowledge accord<strong>in</strong>g to his/her own <strong>in</strong>terests. Career prospectsThe <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Biomedical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g was created to respond to <strong>in</strong>creasedneeds for healthcare <strong>in</strong> our society. These needs result from the age<strong>in</strong>g population,the challenge to provide more and better care with less people and to obta<strong>in</strong> costeffectiveness <strong>in</strong> our healthcare system. Industry, government, hospitals and social<strong>in</strong>surance companies require eng<strong>in</strong>eers with a specific tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>arydoma<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. A biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer acts as an <strong>in</strong>tegrator betweenmedical specialists and technological specialists. He/she is able to understand medicalneeds and to translate them <strong>in</strong>to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g requirements. Conversely, biomedicaleng<strong>in</strong>eers are able to design medical devices and procedures that can effectively solveproblems through their <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice.
