YourSayDear TempoI read Arablish and thought to share this with you:in 1998 I worked on a Gas Development Projectin an interior area of Abu Dhabi called Asab. Themain contractor was from Italy with some stafffrom Romania; the engineers were Egyptians; theconsultant was Scottish; the mechanical contractorswere Koreans; their subcontractors were Pakistanisand the civil contractors were Indians. Most ofthe time people were fighting just because theycouldn’t understand each other. It was a very funnytwo years for me! Fiza Feroz (received by email)Dear Tempo,Tempo Tip!This region is known for its scorchingheat and even minutes in the sunnyafternoon can dehydrate your skin!Refrigerate rose water in a spraybottle and spray after exposure tosun to quickly hydrate and refreshyour skin.Abu Dhabi has programs and plans to providepublic convenience in different areas. For examplerenovating and making the beach safer andincreasing the public transportation. etcHowever, I have a suggestion for the authorities. Ioften see labourers working and in this heat, andtheir work becomes even tougher. But during theirbreak I always notice those carrying bottles withthem. They have to walk to a certain place to findwater and fill up their bottle to bring it back withthem. It will be very kind if the water coolers areavailable in the corners of the roads. This would bea great practice of ‘Sadqa’.S. AlviWe'd love to hear from you. MyABU DHABIMeetYOURNEIGHBOURRoger Chris is a young, energetic guy from India who sellscandies at his stall in Marina Mall. He talks about interestingthings in his life…Frances Gunnison is from NewHampshire, U.S.A. She lived in AbuDhabi, for 2 years. She recently wentback to her homeland and shared herexperience of living in Abu Dhabi:Frances Gunnison is from New“The emirate of Abu Dhabi is magnificent. I never grew tired ofthe flowers along the wide boulevards, nor the palm trees alongthe Gulf. The seemingly endless rolling hills of sand, the dunesconstantly being re-shaped by the wind, the powder-blue skyabove the golden-tan landscape, and the surprising presence ofanimals, occasional flora and fauna, all made a deep impressionon me. I felt both more serene and alive in the desert. My imaginationand my intellect were sparked by my time in Abu Dhabi. Ialso feel great joy about my two years in Abu Dhabi. I had timesthere that made me incredibly happy, that reassured me aboutthe world, about people, about the future.”MEET.... Chris“I have been living in Abu Dhabi for four years. This placeis home to me and my family, as my parents too havebeen living here.“I love my job because I have grown up among thecolors and sweetness of candies and being a child, I wasnaturally attracted towards candy stalls. Hence, I waswilling to help my father with his work at an early age.Today, with my own stall at the Marina Mall, I find myselfworking in a nice environment. If I wasn’t a candy man, perhaps I would have ended up as a laborer working inthe scorching heat!“I dream to have my own candy shop in this mall! MaybeI will sell refreshments too. When my father started thisbusiness, he just had one stall outside a local market inDubai. Now we have three stalls at different places in thecity. I wish to replace the stalls with a nice shop.“I like to spend time with my friends and family. Since, Iam working seven days a week, I don’t get enough timefor hang outs. But when I do, I visit my friends, go forbowling and movies. Sometimes when I am very busyon weekends, my friends come to help me with my stall, and in return I take them for gaming!”PEOPLE METERMEIFF provided a great platform for showcasing MiddleEastern cinema and its celebrities at Emirates Palace andlocal cinema theaters. Get Organized!1. Go with the Flow: Keep a clear idea of all tasks thatare coming in. Work on each of them to maintain theworkflow and avoid cluttering your mind. Make quickdecisions about what to do and get things done tokeep the flow of work smooth.2. Do not Overload: Too much burden affects workperformance and creates fatigue, resulting in poorperfomance. Manage your tasks on the basis of priorityand put forth your best efforts. Making a to-do listeach day may help. Divide your tasks by the availabletime and perform each accordingly.3. Do not Multi-task: Focus on a single task at a timeto achieve optimum results. People think that multitaskingwill save time but in fact, it consumes moretime as you try to wind up multiple things and don’tfocus on any of them.4. Time management: Depending on yourperformance, decide which time of the day you feelmore productive and fresh. Keep the most importanttasks for that time of the day. Some people performbest early morning while others do their best in theafternoon.5. Educate yourself: There is no age limit to gainknowledge and we learn throughout our lives. Lack ofprofound knowledge leads to disorganization. Make ityour mission to educate yourself; be willing to pursueknowledge beyond the framed degree that hangson your office wall. Then, put that knowledge intopractice. Is your desk hidden under a heap ofpaperwork? Do you feel guiltyeverytime you misplace an importantfile? Are your procrastinating waysfinally catching up with you? Then payattention for you will be a scatterbrainno more! This month Tempo willshape up your work life in five easystepsGreat TimeManagement Tip #2*Be disciplined about office chitchat.Don’t be side tracked by idle talk withcolleagues. While some interaction ishealthy and desirable, excessive socializingcan throw your work targets off.Learn to be firm with friends and colleaguesby saying, “While I would loveto socialize with you, I have some workthat needs my immediate attention.”Or you could also suggest that you gettogether after work to chat at leisure.* Part of a 12 issue seriesSTAYINGFIT THE COOL WAY…Fitness doesn’t necessarily involve a hecticexercise plan or regular visits to the gym. It canbe made pleasurable and fun. We are talkingabout the exciting sport of swimming, whichmixes relaxation with work out. When you first had a glance at the OlympicsLet’s have a quick look at theadvantages of swimmingNaturally GorgeousMix an egg with 2 tablespoons of yogurt and 1 tablespoonof mustard oil. OnBy Rantan RaveAs I go to work every morning, I have to pass thegarbage chute to get into the lift on my floor. Mostdays this is an uneventful occurrence, but sometimesit is like a re-enactment of a War movie gone awry!Going through malodorous battle frontlines, jumpingover discarded cardboard boxes, side steppingdecaying food, and climbing over mountains ofuseless packaging and soiled diapers. At this point,it is pretty clear why i keep most of my fancy shoes inthe car. Because thats when i put them on!Some daysit makes me want to strangle the unruly neighbourresponsible for the stinking-path-blocking mess.On bad days (and there are quite a few), the wholecorridor is blocked with large pieces of furniture andwhat have you. I have seen entire disemboweledsofas, stained mattresses propped to the ceiling, rusty barbecue sets, old toys, a rabbit cage (makesyou wonder about the tragic fate of its occupant)…and lots and lots of stuff which has overstayedits welcome period. Some days the ‘stuff’ is nothalf bad. It is still fairly new, still usable, wearable, displayable… if it was in the right home with theright owners. Instead all this stuff will surely beadded to the brimming landfills that will growso much they will one day encroach on our livingspace, just as our neighborhood garbage is alreadyencroaching on mine.My advice to all: buy less, live more, share all.Send us your feedback, questions, or just simply tellus about your linguistic (mis)adventures. Send to:arablish@abudhabitempo.comArablishAn irreverent look at the idiosyncrasies oflanguage, and tips on little things you canlearn today to enjoy it better. We know of the deep yearning all expatsand tourists have to learn Arabic. If youthink this column will teach you Arabic, then think again. There will never, repeatnever, be any substitute for long hardwork and lifelong dedication. However, recognizing that even lazy people needa break now and then, we will, throughthis column, try to pass on bits of wisdom(some useful, some totally rubbish) thatwill help you pepper your English speechwith foreign words and phrases, so youcan exude the air of an intellectual urbansophisticate.‘Transforming’ is a word we coin here. Thisis the ‘conversion’ (not to be confused with‘translation’ or ‘transliteration’) of a wordor a phrase. This usually happens withbrand names that end up being writteninelegantly in another language, andpronounced rather absurdly thereafter.Gucci, in Arabic is written as “Ghooottshi”and if spoken quickly enough soundsmore like a clearing of the throat followedby a sneeze. We are told there are thosewho prefer to soften the pronunciationto “ghooosshi” which sounds a tad morecivilized. And for the Arabic transformedphrase equivalent, we pick “Madinat.”A word to all the expats out there whoinsist on using the word “Madinat” asa short form for “Madinat Jumeirah,”“Madinat Zayed,” etc, stop! It makesyou sound severely Arabic-challenged.‘Madina’ means ‘town’ in Arabic, whilethe ‘t’ at the end of ‘madina’ translatesinto ‘of’ followed by the word: Jumeriah,Zayed etc. So from now on stop sayingI am going to ‘city of,’ unless that’s theactual name of the city (as if ), or if you’resaying this to someone who understandsabsolutely no Arabic and may actuallybe impressed by your linguistic knack forabbreviation. Another problem with theusage of ‘madinat’ is the way it is usuallypronounced. Transgressors pronounce itas ‘maaah-dinet,’ whereas ‘madina’ is waysmoother; rhymes with ‘verbena.’FUNNYTHINGOver toithappenedto me...ABOUT LIFEABOUT LIFEI wanted to buy one of the new mini laptops and wentto the biggest computer shop in one of the malls inAbu Dhabi. There was quite a choice, among the snazzypocket sized mini-computer by Vaio (the one that sticksin your back pocket—or so the advertisement says), thenthere were similar products from LG, Dell, Samsung etc. Iliked the one from Dell because it was less expensive and(I admit) I loved the bright red color. The salesman was bent on selling me the LG because it camebundled with an external drive and a carrying back. I explained tothe salesperson that the cost of the Dell, an external drive and a bagwas still better value, but he was clearly not convinced. He told me that theDell computer didn’t come with a back up CD (it was in the computer itself ),and this I later found out to be untrue.Anyhow he capitulated and gave me what I asked for but I was taken abackby what seemed like blatant bias that did not address the customer’s need, but clearly served the salesperson’s commission from the specific brand. Iwonder if anyone has had a similar experience. Sent in to Tempo by M. Amer.*You“It is a problem that happensnot only in electronics but inother product lines as well. Ithink it is an issue of carpe diem, buyer beware.”D. KhanWhat would you do if this happenedto you? Would you trust thesalesperson’s advice or make yourown decision?“The buyer should always do product research. Right now it issomething that is easy to do with the help of consumer sites. I thinkyou should listen to the salesperson but always make up your ownmind.”R. Samer“Regrettably it always happens with women. I think most womenknow less about electronics and I think we are often taken for a ride.I say take your husband or brother.”S.M.“The store should regulate things like that. 26CultureTalkLET’S GO PEARL DIVING!"The pearl owes nothing to man. It isabsolutely a gift of nature on whichman cannot improve."- George Fredrick Kunz, GemologistBefore the oil boom in the Arabian Gulf, pearl divingwas an important source of income for Arabianfamilies. Many successful Emirati entrepreneurstoday can trace their familial roots to the professionof pearl diving. Using only nose pegs and ropes, localpearl divers braved great peril to collect oysters fromthe ocean floor. Fortunately, despite modern innovationslike the jet ski and power boat their legacylives on in the Emirates even today. All thanks to theEmirates Diving Association.“The EDA is a non-profit organization consisting of ahandful of volunteers sharing a common goal- a lovefor the sea. As a nation of seafarers and pearl divers,we are historically and socially indebted to ourseas. Our timeless heritage and traditions as peopledependent on fisheries and seaborne trade havecontributed enormously towards our regional prosperityand development.”- Faraj Butti Al MuhairbiChairman of the Board of Directors Emirates DivingAssociationWish to go pearl diving? Ourneighbors are five families: two are westerners, two arefrom the subcontinent and one is an Arab family. Twoof the families are Muslim. I have two questions: is it OKto invite mixed couples, and is it OK to tell our neighborsnot to bring their children along?Dear Mark,- Mark on the CornicheWhat a wonderful idea! Isn’t it great that we have such amedley of nationalities in Abu Dhabi? What a nice way to get toknow the neighbors as well as to learn about new cultures. Bythe way, in Islamic and Arab society, the neighbor is regardedvery highly regarded and communities are encouraged tonurture their ties with their neighbors. But cultural traditionsdo vary from one nationality and one religion to another, andso my strong suggestion is to have your wife meet the otherladies beforehand and find out how they would prefer tosocialize.Be mindful that in most Arab and Muslim societies men andwomen sit separately from each other. With regards to thechildren, I don’t believe there is anything wrong with tellingyour neighbors that dinner invitation is only for adults. By talkingto the ladies beforehand your wife can determine what setup would be most comfortable for all invitees, and I am sureyou may be able to reach a nice compromise that will open thedoor to making good friends and wonderful neighbors.Any questions for Um Saif: umsaif@abudhabitempo.comSand LandA Yank inBored in the ‘Burbs...For Now!While the capitol city of Abu Dhabi is theepicenter of culture and entertainment for theEmirate of Abu Dhabi, there are big things instore for the outlying communities “off the island”.You see, the City of Abu Dhabi is situatedon an island much like New York’s Manhattan, and there is no more space to expand sonaturally the new projects are planned for thesuburbs on the far side of the bridges. One such ‘burb is Khalifa City. KC is locatedbetween Abu Dhabi City and the airport. I havebeen a resident of KC since I relocated herefrom the land of hot dogs, apple pie, baseballand income taxes almost a year and a half ago. When I first arrived in Abu Dhabi, my employerput me up in a hotel downtown for a couple ofmonths. I quickly became accustomed to havingshops, restaurants, nightclubs and resortsjust a walk or short cab ride away. The energyand vibe of the city was electrifying. However,my enthusiasm for downtown living started towane when I bought a car and settled into thereal life of having to drive the 40 minute commuteto work myself and then having to findan empty parking spot at the end of the day,an almost impossible task and a subject for afuture column.I was soon assigned living quarters in KhalifaCity. KC is a vast stretch of sand dotted withhigh-end villas and little else. What was abundantin the City was lacking out here. My fellowresidents and I nicknamed KC the “Moonbase”as some venues looked as if NASA could havefaked the lunar landings there. Boring! However, things are changing. The view frommy balcony is chockablock with excitingnew developments being built. The sleepybedroom communities outside the metropolitanareas are starting to arise from their deepsleep and will soon become entertainmentand cultural centers of their own. That will be agood thing. LIFECOACH COUCHBy Samantha DavisDownsized But UpbeatParent and Teenage “Angst”A common problem in the UAE and everywhere is how to handle teenagers. Many parents note a definite transitionperiod as their teenagers go through a stage that is often characterized by stubbornness and a drive to beindependent from their families. The irony is that teenagers feel that this is a journey for them to assert their individuality and yet the teenageyears are actually the epitome of aping your peers and succumbing to ‘peer pressure.’If parents are also going through ‘angst’ in dealing with their teenagers then the good thing to remember is theyalmost always grow out of it eventually. Here are some quick pointers on how to deal with self-asserting, stubborn teenagers:1. Treat them differently: Teenagers expect to betreated different from younger children. Be responsive, and listen to them—even if you don’t agreewith what they are saying. A lot of times teenagersmirror their parents and if you are overly stubborn, they will act the same way because they see it as asign of maturity.2. Validate their ideas: Many teenagers are ally more mature than we think, and many areactutestingtheir own limits; not in how far they canget with their parents, but on how to negotiate, persuade and assert their voice. Don’t jump toconclusions and don’t brush them off. Createparameters of respectful engagement and youmay be able to enjoy discussions, even if youdon’t agree with one another. A lot of times yourteen may want intervention as well as advice, butthey want to be heard first.4. No Labels: Don’t label your child as labels can bepowerful and will shape your child’s own assessmentof himself or herself. If you need to identify atroubling habit then label the behavior but don’tlabel the child. For example you can say “what youdid was irresponsible,” but refrain from saying “youare an irresponsible child.”3. Let them learn: Try to remember back to yourteenage years and remember that your teenageson or daughter is going through a difficult timewith many choices and many challenges. The worldhas become more complex than ever and teensalso go through a great amount of stress. Be supportiveand try to help your teen work out his orher problems and issues, not be interfering (theyneed to go through their own learnings) but byreminding your child that you can always be calledupon at any time.Get Moxie Tempo suggestion for parents...Get teenagers involved in community work and social activities. Standup: takeAction is an organization which encourages community members (corporations, educational institutes) to get involved with issues plaguing today’s world. Poverty, hunger, environmental safety, empowerment of women and child mortality are afew examples. Stand up, speak out and do it with your kids beside you so that theysee that the world has bigger problems than their own. Visit www.standup.ae28Tempo November 2009

THEBEATAn Artist to Watch Out !Charlie Winston, decked out in trilby hats and jazzy outfitscuts a smooth image. His new single ‘Like a hobo’ was a hit thissummer and his album, ‘Hobo’ is now one of the top selling inEurope. Unknown a year ago, Charlie Winston, 31, has scouredevery major festival this summer. And yet, the English songsterremains anonymous in his own country. But this is not for long, this artist is about to take the music world by storm. And forgood reason too....withAicAichArtists in ourNeighbourhoodWhat makes him so unique? His songs and music are all about what surrounds him. It is likea conversation, an interaction with the world.“I’m just trying to keep my eyes open as much as possible astep and not be too much within one thing so I can take a stepaway from it and look at it and talk about it”.His style cannot be categorized into a box, an eclectic fusion offolk, indie folk and indie pop, he presents an enchanting melodiouscharm. Charlie Winston is one of the rare musicians in theworld who has broadened his music horizons from jazz to beat, folk, indie pop etc. And people can easily identify and relate tohis songs. This is what makes him so distinctive. It is appropriatefor this age that has every type musical style presented on aplatter. If you were to ask anyone these days what type of musicdo you like? The chances are high that the response wouldbe that they like a bit of everything, hip hop, jazz, classical, rock, pop etc. Musical tastes are so varied and accessible now that itis rare to find someone who would say “I only like rock music”for instance. The idea behind the song “like a hobo” is to take the romanticvision of a hobo; being a traveler, or being someone who islooking for work while being someone who is free to wander. But the notion of ‘like a hobo’ for me in this song is someonewho is taking life into their own hands. That is what the song isall about, taking his life into his own hands and sticking up forthe things that he believes in and what is real for him and tothe world. His second single “In your hand” has also been released.
