In particular, journal papers include 10 full papers (6 on the IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control,2 on Automatica, 1 on the IEEE Trans. on Neural Networks and 1 on the IEEE Trans. on Control SystemsTechnology). I have also been Guest Editor of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Controlfor the special issue on System Identification for Biological Systems.According to Scopus, on November 15th, 2012 my works have been cited 1496 times and my h index is 17.Furthermore, 6 papers have been cited more than 80 times and one paper got 285 citations.Over the last 16 years, my research interests have embraced distributed control and estimation, control ofmulti-agent systems, modeling and analysis of biochemical networks, hybrid systems, Bayesian learning andperiodic systems. Next, a description of my most relevant papers is provided (citations source: Scopus,November 15th, 2012).[S-1] M. Farina, G. Ferrari-Trecate, and R. Scattolini. Distributed moving horizon estimation for linearconstrained systems. IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control, 55(11):2462–2475, 2010. Full paper. Cited10 times. This paper addresses the problem of state estimation for sensor networks, where noisy measurements collectedby each sensor provide just a partial information of the state of the observed systems. In recent years, therehave been several works on this topic, but, differently form existing contributions, we have considered thepresence of constraints on noise and state variables. To this purpose we have proposed a distributed movinghorizon estimation scheme and analyze the impact of network connectivity on convergence of the estimates.[S-2] R. Porreca, S. Journal of Computational Biology, 15(10):1365–1380, 2008. Cited14 times. This paper considers the problem of reconstructing, at the same time, parameters and structure of geneticnetworks using time-course gene expression data that can be collected through, e.g., gene reporter systems. In order to capture the on/off behavior of genes we focus on discontinuous piecewise affine models of geneticnetworks. While this kind of model were already proposed for biological networks, no method was availablefor their structural identification before this publication.9

Cited 43 times. In this paper, we have studied the problem of driving a collection of mobile robots to a given target destinationin an ordered manner. In particular, we have provided a policy that allows follower agents to be herded byleader agents during the transfer, hence guaranteeing a containment property. This paper has triggered theattention of several researchers in the area of consensus problems who have generalized our results wideningthe variety of agent dynamics and communication networks.[S-4] P.-A. Cited 87 times. This paper provides one of the first contributions in the literature on how average consensus is affectedby delayed communication between agents. We have considered agents with single-integrator dynamics, undirected communication graphs and constant or time-varying delays, with the goal of providing sufficientconditions for consensus achievement. Results in this paper have been apprised and extended by severalauthors as witnessed by the number of citations.[S-5] S. Paoletti, A.Lj. Cited 91 times. In the last twelve years many different identification algorithms for hybrid systems have been proposed. Allauthors of this paper are among the first ones who have developed algorithms for hybrid identification andhave followed progresses in the field since the very beginning. In order to help new researchers familiarizewith this research area, we decided to write a tutorial summarizing available methods as well as associatedfeatures, advantages and drawbacks. The paper, that stems from a tutorial session of ECC07, has been wellreceived by the community and it is often cited as a key reference on hybrid identification.[S-6] G. Ferrari-Trecate, A. Cited 26 times. The study of consensus algorithms has witnessed a tremendous growth in the last years. Many studies highlightedsimilarities between consensus policies and known results in other fileds, e.g., computer science andMarkov chains. In this paper, relying on the formalisms of Partial difference Equations (that mimic PartialDifferential Equations over spatial domains that have a graph structure) introduced by A. Bensoussan andJ.-L. Menaldi, we have highlighted the profound link between consensus algorithms based on Laplacians andclassic PdEs such as the heat equation. This allows physical-based reasoning to be exploited for conjecturingformation properties.[S-7] G. Ferrari-Trecate, E. Gallestey, P. Letizia, M. Spedicato, M. Cited 26 times. This paper, written in cooperation with researchers from the ABB research center (Baden, Switzerland)presents an industrial applications of hybrid systems. We have addressed the problem of modelling acombined-cycle power plant embracing continuous and discrete features of turbines (e.g. on/off switching, minimum up and down times and different types of start up). Furthermore we have shown how to recasteconomic optimization problems into model predictive control that allows plant operations to be optimizedby taking into account the time variability of both prices and electricity/steam demands.10

As witnessed bythe number of citations, clustering-based techniques for hybrid identification have become very popular andfound several applications in, e.g., mapping road features, engine control, analysis of driving behaviors, modeling of biological networks, biomedical applications and identification of industrial systems. I have alsoimplemented methods presented in the paper in the Hybrid Identification Toolbox (HIT) for MatLab. Cited 285 times. At the beginning of this century, several papers focused on structural properties of hybrid systems suchas stability, observability and controllability. In these two papers we have studied structural properties fordiscrete-time piecewise affine systems. In the first paper we exploited different classes of Lyapunov functions(e.g. common quadratic and piecewise quadratic) for proposing LMI-based algorithms for stability andl 2 -performance analysis. Since then, our tests have been generalized by several authors and also used foranalyzing stability of closed-loop systems equipped with explicit, low-complexity MPC. In the second paper, for the first time, we have shown the equivalence between piecewise affine systems and systems in the MLDform and focused on the former models to investigate controllability and observability of hybrid systems. We have shown that these properties are not inherited from those of the affine modes of operation. Bothpapers can be considered seminal contributions in the field of hybrid systems theory.PUBLICATIONSJournal papers[J-1] S. Riverso and G. Ferrari-Trecate.
