Mission Statement
Dulwich College Shanghai’s primary goal for each student is the pursuit of excellence. We aim to provide
a quality training and competition programme for all sports teams that represent the College against other
schools and organisations in China and across Southeast Asia.
Statement of Policy
Dulwich College Shanghai aims to offer as many sports as the College can reasonably support and will
compete in the following conferences – FOBISSEA, ACAMIS, SISAC, CISSA and DCA Games.
The College provides high quality coaching to students as they seek to reach their full sporting potential. The
programme seeks to promote the fundamental characteristics of commitment, loyalty, cooperation, leadership
and an appreciation of the role and value of the individual within a team framework.
Sportsmanship
Dulwich College Shangahi recognises that teams and individuals contribute significantly to the development
of character and school spirit. Sportsmanship and fair play is an integral part of this experience. We expect
our students, coaches, parents and supporters to represent Dulwich College Shanghai in a manner that is
respectful to others. It is our responsibility to help develop and practice the highest standards of courtesy,
Introduction
Dear Parents,
The mission of the the College Sports Department is to ensure the opportunity for all students to try out for
College representative sports teams and experience dedicated and focused coaching within season. We
offer a broad range of activities and are members of several sporting associations here in China, as well as,
across South East Asia.
We have a strong and committed coaching staff at the College with many nationalities contributing to the
programme. This year we have assigned Heads of Sport for Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby, Volleyball,
and Swimming. These coaches have many years experience in their respective sports and the enthusiasm
to improve the programme at the College. You will see them and read a little about the sports later in the
handbook.
I am a firm believer that performances improve when students are supported. I invite all parents to come
and watch their children play competitive fixtures here at the College and away from home. Students and
coaches really do appreciate, and are motivated, by crowd support.
Please take a moment to read and familiarise yourself with the sports handbook. I hope you will find the
answers to many of your questions regarding DCS competitive sport, rules and regulations and what we
offer and when.
We look forward to another successful year for our teams and students and hope that all activities are
enjoyed in the spirit that embraces great sport.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or concerns on
The College is a member of the following organisations:
CISSA, SISAC, ACAMIS, FOBISSEA and SSL
This membership provides opportunities for competitive sport against other schools. Each organisation sets
Welcome from the Head of Swimming
We have 2 squads based on swimmers’ abilities and ages for students in Years 3 – 13.
RedFin is our competitive senior team and BlueFin is our junior team. Students swim before
and after school depending upon the team and day of week. Our students compete at swim
meets throughout the year in the Shanghai Swim League. DCS students also swim at the
age related FOBISSEA events throughout the year across South East Asia.
Ms. Win Ge
Welcome from the Head of Football
We have football teams representing the College all year round depending upon
the age group and season. Students from Year 3 – 13 can play football for the
College with boys and girls teams across the year groups. Our students compete
in CISSA, SISAC, ACAMIS, DCA and FOBISSEA Games throughout the year.
Welcome from the Head of Basketball
We would like to welcome everybody to another very exciting year of Basketball at DCS.
Having seen a consistent finals presence and scoring a number of Championships over
the past few years, our basketball coaches are looking to further foster our ever improving
basketball programme. The enthusiasm and dedication the students have for this growing
sport is outstanding. We are very fortunate to have devoted coaching staff who are committed
to making our students into not only skilled athletes, but athletes who are able to demonstrate
sportsmanship and leadership qualities both on and off the court when representing the
College.
Welcome from the Head of Volleyball
2012/2013 promises to be a busy and exciting year for Volleyball at Dulwich College
Shanghai. This is my second year at the college and I was so impressed with the
enthusiasm and improvement shown in our volleyball players last year. There
are lots of keen and able students waiting to get started in Season 1 who will be
competing in our senior D1 and D2 teams. We will have a busy training schedule
and will strive to improve our performances as individuals but more importantly
as a collective team with each game played. I’m very much looking forward to
welcoming both existing players and new players to get started in August. The
season for junior players will be starting around February for our developing junior
teams. There was some strong talent in these teams last year and these students
enjoyed competing in some very close matches.
I would like to encourage as much parent support as possible, especially for our home games. The support
and cheering really does boost the confidence of our players and motivates them even more to play to their
best.
Welcome from the Head of Netball
Netball is a hugely popular game amongst the girls here at the College and we hope that this
popularity will spread amongst the other schools in the area. Our aim is to continue to foster
this enthusiasm and to provide quality coaching and as much opportunity for match play as
possible. We have had very successful sides over the years (SISAC and CISSA champions,
as well as, DCB U15 Champions) and have every belief that this will continue.
Welcome from the Head of Rugby
We are very fortunate here at DCS because we have a large dedicated Rugby
coaching team, all of whom are highly experienced and passionate about Rugby.
We have had very successful sides over the years (SISAC U19 and CISSA
U13 champions, DCB Invitational U13 Champions, and DCS U14 Touch Rugby
winners). This year all age groups will be attending major tournaments around Asia
and the target is for even greater success.
Primary FOBISSEA and DCA Games
The Primary FOBISSEA Games is the pinnacle event for Junior School sport at DCS.
Students from Y3 – 6 try out at swimming, athletics, football and T-ball whereby 36 are finally
chosen to represent the College against other international schools across South East Asia.
The College also competes in the DCA (Dulwich College Asia) games at athletics and
football. Those selected for FOBISSEA cannot also take part in this event in order to increase
opportunities for Junior School students.
Ms. Elle Coughlan (Head of Junior PE)
ellenie.coughlan@dulwich-shanghai.cn
Senior FOBISSEA Games
The U13 and U15 FOBISSEA Games are, like the Primary Games, multi disciplinary
events. The events differ slightly to the Primary games in that basketball replaces
T-ball. Again a maximum of 36 students can be selected (18 boys and 18 girls)
from Y7 and 8 for the U13 and Y9 and 10 for the U15 games. DCS competes in the
top division for FOBISSEA and so competes against strong British schools across
South East Asia.
Selection Policy
The College participates in a number of local, national and international tournaments each year, and in each case, there
are clearly stated selection policies. To a great extent, these policies are determined by the governing body, although the
College adapts these policies in what it considers to be in the best interest of the school and its students.
In this policy statement, extracts from the handbooks governing each tournament are italicised.
1. FOBISSEA
The main international tournaments are organised by FOBISSEA (the Federation of British International Schools in South
and East Asia.). The games are organised at Primary, Under 13 and Under 15 aged groups, with invitational events for the
Over 15 category. Policies related to the games are determined by the Heads of the 30 member schools, and are based
on recommendations by the Heads’ of P.E (HOPE) and HOPE executive committee.
Aims
• To provide students with a variety of sporting opportunities at an appropriate level for all member schools in a safe,
appropriate and competitive environment
Objectives
• To make the Games accessible to children from Year 4 upwards
• To ensure equal opportunity and participation to both boys and girls
• To ensure the Games provide a learning experience in sportsmanship and in the value of healthy competition.
• To understand the the benefits of training in preparation for competition
• To enable students to specialise in sports appropriate to their age group
A. The Primary Games
The primary members of FOBISSEA are organised into four groups of six or seven schools. Each school is placed in a
group with schools of a similar size or ability level to ensure fair competition. Each participating school selects a team of
six boys and six girls to represent years 4, 5 and 6, making up a total party size of 36 students. Dulwich College Shanghai
is currently in Group A2 with The British School Manila, Jerudong School Brunei, British International School Vietnam,
British International School Puxi, Dulwich College Beijing and Shrewsbury International School Bangkok. The sports
students will compete at are football, t-ball, swimming and athletics.
The FOBISSEA rules to be adhered to are:
• Maximum squad allowed 36 (18 boys and 18 girls)
• Students will compete in their respective year groups. It is possible for students to play up to represent the year group
above their own, but students may not play down a year group.
DCS Selection Policy:
• DCS allows any student to try out for the FOBISSEA squads (years 3 – 6)
• DCS will take the strongest team available. Yet will take the full 36 where possible.
• A trial will be held for athletics, swimming, football and t-ball, which will take place during lesson time and after school
between January and February. The PE department will grade football and t-ball using the suggested national curriculum
guidelines in accordance with the DCS PE assessment policy.
• After the collation of all results, the PE department will select, on the basis of the facts and professional judgment, to
decide who makes the final 6 for each section.
• Only successful names will be published (plus the name of 1 reserve per group).
B. Under 13 and Under 15 games
The senior members of FOBISSEA are organised into four groups of 7 schools. Dulwich College Shanghai is currently
in Group A2 with The British School Manila, Jerudong School Brunei, British International School Vietnam, British
International School Puxi, Dulwich College Beijing and Shrewsbury International School Bangkok. The sports students
will compete at are football, basketball, swimming and athletics.
15
The FOBISSEA rules to be adhered to are:
• Maximum squad allowed 36 (18 boys and 18 girls)
• Maximum team sizes 12 (basketball and football)
• Students must fall within the eligibility age range. Age is taken on 1st August in the year of the competition.
No primary student may compete in the U13 games
• Students may, where necessary, compete in both the U13 and U15 games in the same year. This should
only be used by smaller sized schools to help in fielding a full team.
DCS Selection Policy:
• DCS allows any student to try out for the FOBISSEA squads (years 7 and 8 for U13 and years 8 to 10 for
U15).
• Students must fall within the eligibility age maximum. A student in year 10 for instance but year 11 age
cannot compete (FOBISSEA rules). Equally no primary student may compete in the U13 games (FOBISSEA
rules).
• DCS will take the strongest team possible. That means it may not take the maximum 12 allowed for team
sports if deemed not to benefit the overall squad.
• DCS swimmers and athletes will come from the chosen team squad members unless exceptional and so
desired by the coach, child and parents concerned.
• All students if selected for a team will play at FOBISSEA.
• All selected swimmers and athletes will participate in at least 1 event.
The U13 and U15 FOBISSEA Games are, like the Primary Games, multi disciplinary events. The events
differ slightly to the Primary games in that basketball replaces T-ball. Again a maximum of 36 students can be
selected (18 boys and 18 girls) from Y7 and 8 for the U13 and Y9 and 10 for the U15 games. DCS competes
in the top division for FOBISSEA and so compete against strong British schools across South East Asia.
Billeting
Billeting – General information
DCS is a member of the ACAMIS Orange group, which requires schools who host tournaments to house visiting
students. This is a reciprocal arrangement, which is meant to keep to a minimum the costs of visiting other schools for
games.
Parents of DCS athletes will be requested to undertake hosting responsibilities when DCS hosts tournaments on its
campus. Consequently visiting athletes will be housed and fed (breakfast and dinner) in the home of a host athlete.
The Director of Sports will contact parents in advance of tournaments requesting they make themselves available
to host visiting students. As this is a reciprocal arrangement it is expected that all parents of Senior School athletes
undertake this in order for the system to work effectively.
Billeting at Dulwich College Shanghai
Billeting is a method of providing low cost accommodation for students involved in excursions and sporting trips hosted
between Dulwich Colleges, ISCMS (International Schools Choral Music Society) and ACAMIS (Association of China
and Mongolia International Schools) schools.
We would like to assume that all of our families are going to offer a safe and secure environment for all billeted students.
However, we cannot absolutely guarantee their suitability, as we are unable to acquire police record checks or have
any assurance other than word of mouth or self-referral. We take the safety and wellbeing of all students very seriously
and have formulated the following guidelines for staff and families to follow.
• Billeting needs to be a planned activity in which the Headmasters of Schools, billeting coordinators,
supervising teachers, the host parents and the parents of the visiting students are fully informed and
implement arrangements that have been agreed upon by the Heads of Schools themselves.
• Students should never be billeted alone. They should always be with at least one other student from the
travelling team.
• It is our expectation that no student will share a room with anyone other than a student with whom they are
already acquainted and familiar (eg from same school/team)
• Students should have contact home numbers of the members of staff in charge of the group. Staff members
responsible for the group should have the mobile phone number and home number of the family who is
billeting the student.
• If the wellbeing or safety of a student is at risk, or there is suspicion that this could be so, the student will be
relocated to another approved accommodation.
DCS Billeting Obligations (when hosting students)
Below are the rules that DCS follow for ACAMIS and DCA competitions, which are accepted practice for International
schools.
1. Hosting rules and guidelines are in effect from the time the visiting team leaves their school until they arrive
home.
2. Exercise the supervision and care that you would normally exercise with your own children
3. Under no condition are visiting athletes to be housed without adult supervision
4. Athletes are not permitted to change housing arrangements
5. The use of tobacco, drugs and the consumption of alcohol by students are strictly prohibited. Any violation
should be reported to the Director of Sports immediately or the person in charge of the tournament
6. Collect guests at the designated time
7. Arrange for suitable transportation. Normally this is expected to be a private car to and from the sporting events
21
8. Provide your guest with an evening meal and breakfast
9. Curfew hours cannot be extended and any violation should be reported immediately to the Director
Sports Kits for DCS Teams
All players selected for College representative sides will receive a sports kit for each match. This will include
a jersey and a pair of shorts (skort for netball). It is essential and expected that students return all kits to the
College at the end of the season.
Players for all events are required to be attired in below (all of which are available for purchase at the College
shop).
• DCS kit bag
• DCS Panthers hooded top (Junior school maroon and Senior school blue)
• DCS socks (for rugby and football squads)
Travelling squads to ACAMIS and FOBISSEA events will also need to be attired in below:
• DCS travel T-shirt (available for purchase at College shop)
• DCS sports track trousers (students will loan these from the PE/Sports department if and when the
weather requires their use)
Communication
Tournament dates are available on the school calendar as well as the sports section of the school website.
Training schedules are to be published in advance on sports notice boards, the school bulletin and DCS
website.
http://dulwich-shanghai.cn
All competitive teams require athletes to be aware of changes to schedules and to check on a regular basis
that the information they have is up to date. Students require consent forms if they are to be considered for
competitive teams. These forms will include the contact details of the student. The forms can be found on
the web site and in the PE/Sports department.
Cancellation of Games/Practices
Cancellations do regrettably occur and the College will endeavour to make cancellation decisions by 1.00pm
for afternoon fixtures and will email parents. Rescheduled dates will be emailed to parents and published on
the website as soon as they are made available and also on sports notice boards for students.
Transportation
Due to issues of safety and reliability and to encourage team spirit, DCS insists that all students travel to
away venues on school supplied transport. Parents may wish to make alternative arrangements for the
return journey but must consult with the coach prior to departure.
