The clock was given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong>community <strong>in</strong> lov<strong>in</strong>g memory of Evelyn Petruccelli <strong>in</strong> March 2003 by her family,friends and <strong>the</strong> Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>. Evelyn was <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong>Friends, served as a trustee, and spent many hours volunteer<strong>in</strong>g her time at <strong>the</strong>library.You might have noticed <strong>the</strong> article pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olean Times Herald or <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong>Pan<strong>the</strong>r ask<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> community’s help <strong>in</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g for repairs due to <strong>the</strong> library’sand Friends’ limited f<strong>in</strong>ancial resources. Thanks to generousbenefactors, we are nearly one-half of <strong>the</strong> way to meet<strong>in</strong>g our goal of$3,000 and anticipate additional tax-deductible gifts.The Friends voted to go ahead <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> repairs at <strong>the</strong>ir Septembermeet<strong>in</strong>g. Hopefully <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future when you drive past <strong>the</strong> library ourcommunity clock will show <strong>the</strong> correct time.


Election Day Bake SaleNovember 3 10 a.m.— 5 p.m.Let us provide even more motivation for you to get out and voteon Tuesday, November 3: <strong>the</strong> Friends’ Election Day pie sale.All k<strong>in</strong>ds of scrumptious pies will be sold, even coconut andpumpk<strong>in</strong>, thanks to <strong>the</strong> generosity of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>rans,who are lett<strong>in</strong>g us use <strong>the</strong>ir special w<strong>in</strong>dow-front refrigerator forthose types that must be kept cold. Both whole pies and pieceswill be sold this year, as well as smaller sizes. The <strong>Portville</strong> <strong>Library</strong> Book Club cont<strong>in</strong>ues to meet every third Monday of<strong>the</strong> month, but now under rotat<strong>in</strong>g leadership. Over <strong>the</strong> summer, <strong>the</strong>members decided to take turns choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> books and guid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> discussions.The varied nature of <strong>the</strong> books can be seen <strong>in</strong> some of <strong>the</strong>ir recentselections: The Book Thief by Zusak, The Thirteenth Tale by Setterfield,and The Heretic’s Daughter by Kent. This lively group welcomes new members,who should come <strong>in</strong> ahead of time to pick up <strong>the</strong> selected book.On Monday even<strong>in</strong>g, October 19 at 6:30, <strong>the</strong> Friends are sponsor<strong>in</strong>g a pass<strong>the</strong>-dishd<strong>in</strong>ner for all members. Everyone enjoyed <strong>the</strong> similar d<strong>in</strong>ner held <strong>in</strong>January this year, and this is ano<strong>the</strong>r opportunity to renew acqua<strong>in</strong>tances andmeet new friends. We will provide your table service and beverages; you needbr<strong>in</strong>g only yourself and a favorite dish to share. Afterwards, President JoeDuShaw will preview com<strong>in</strong>g activities for <strong>the</strong> Friends,and we will also get an update from Charlene on <strong>the</strong>Junior Friends. Put October 19 on your calendar andjo<strong>in</strong> us for an even<strong>in</strong>g of good food and fun.It Pays to Read at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong> <strong>Library</strong>The children’s department has started a new read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>centivehere at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong> <strong>Library</strong>. As <strong>the</strong> young patrons <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong>iramount of read<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y will receive different prizes – each <strong>with</strong>a money <strong>the</strong>me. When <strong>the</strong>y reach <strong>the</strong>ir first goal <strong>the</strong>y will receive an unreal$100 pencil! The o<strong>the</strong>r prizes <strong>in</strong>clude a notepad and a bouncy ball. We aretry<strong>in</strong>g to reassure <strong>the</strong>se young people that <strong>the</strong> knowledge and enjoyment<strong>the</strong>y receive from read<strong>in</strong>g will far surpass <strong>the</strong> prizes <strong>the</strong>y receive, but sometimesit is just fun to be rewarded.Story Time = Fun TimeFriday at 10 o’clock f<strong>in</strong>ds our children’s department full of life <strong>with</strong> children listen<strong>in</strong>gto books, play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>door games and try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir hands at creat<strong>in</strong>g a varietyof crafts. Before leav<strong>in</strong>g, kids have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to select books andcheck <strong>the</strong>m out for a fantastic week of read<strong>in</strong>g.


Our Creative SummerThe library experienced ano<strong>the</strong>r successful SummerRead<strong>in</strong>g Program this past summer. The NYState <strong>the</strong>me was “Be Creative @ <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>” andwe had a fun time plann<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g that<strong>the</strong>me. Our kickoff night was mak<strong>in</strong>g and eat<strong>in</strong>g grossfood. The kids loved mak<strong>in</strong>g “armpit fudge” and“boogers on a stick”. Throughout <strong>the</strong> weeks we hadtwo guest speakers, made a fleece pillow, created puppets,and closed <strong>with</strong> water games. The Art Mobilefrom Sa<strong>in</strong>t Bonaventure came for three weeks andworked <strong>with</strong> a group of children on pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir ownmasterpiece.A total of 120 children were registered for this year’s program. We offered fiveMonday even<strong>in</strong>g special events, five story hour programs, three Art Mobile sessions,six visits from <strong>Portville</strong> Central’s summer school students, and our clos<strong>in</strong>gprogram.The young patrons were able to receive rewards for <strong>the</strong> different books <strong>the</strong>y read.The younger children had to read ten books to start earn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir prizes. They read atotal of 2,853 books this summer. The older children kept track of <strong>the</strong> hours <strong>the</strong>yread, total<strong>in</strong>g 407 hours. Congratulations for a job well done.Local food pantry <strong>in</strong>need of our help!The library is collect<strong>in</strong>g spaghetti,spaghetti sauce and canned fruit forour local food pantry. The food pantryis located at <strong>the</strong>First PresbyterianChurch and is open forresidents of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Portville</strong>School District.Beth Marv<strong>in</strong> heads up of our children’s departmentas an<strong>in</strong>novative fulltime employee.Ms. Marv<strong>in</strong> hasbeen organiz<strong>in</strong>gour summerread<strong>in</strong>g programand work<strong>in</strong>gpart-time for severalyears and isalready an oldhand at libraryresponsibilities.


Turkey RaffleSpragues’ Turkey Farm once aga<strong>in</strong> is donat<strong>in</strong>g a fresh turkey to be raffled off by <strong>the</strong>Friends to a lucky w<strong>in</strong>ner. You will f<strong>in</strong>d tickets for sale <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> newsletter, and morewill be available at <strong>the</strong> library at <strong>the</strong> cost of one for a dollar or ten for five dollars. Sobr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your tickets between now and <strong>the</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g on Friday, November 20. Many thanks to<strong>the</strong> Spragues for <strong>the</strong>ir cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g generosity.Tree Assembly/Trimm<strong>in</strong>gHelp is needed to set up two artificialtrees and decorate one on Monday even<strong>in</strong>gNovember 30 at 6 pm.It has also been brought to our attentionthat some of our ornaments are <strong>in</strong>need of be<strong>in</strong>g replaced. Ei<strong>the</strong>r a handmadeor purchased ornament can bebrought to <strong>the</strong> library to help brightenup our beautiful Christmas tree.Our annual mitten tree will also be <strong>in</strong>need of mittens, hats and scarves. Lastyear nearly 300 items were distributedto those <strong>in</strong> need through <strong>the</strong> local foodpantry and churches.ReplacementsThree new Dell computers will be ready foryour use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future. The Onl<strong>in</strong>e OpportunityGrant and match<strong>in</strong>g funds from<strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>’s Board of Trustees have madethis all possible. Two will replace our orig<strong>in</strong>alGates computers and <strong>the</strong> third will beset up for reference and photography use. Apr<strong>in</strong>ter and scanner will also be availablefor public use.The library provides basic computer classesus<strong>in</strong>g Microsoft Word 2003 and surf<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>world wide web on Tuesday afternoons andThursdays even<strong>in</strong>gs for five week sessions.The classes are open to all our patrons at nocharge.Thank you Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>for our new sign!The Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> along <strong>with</strong> donations made <strong>in</strong>memory of George Boyer supplied <strong>the</strong> library <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundsto make our beautiful sign possible.
