From the Principal’s Desk
What a lovely time of the year this is –
always very busy with exams and all the
end-of-year events, but so positive with
welcoming the new parents, preparing
for special functions like the Advent
Liturgy and the Valedictory Mass, and of
course with the Prizegivings which are
such a highlight for us all. At Orientation
Day yesterday it was so good to welcome
all our new parents and pupils to
St Columba’s. Next week is Sports and
Cultural Awards and the opportunity for
recognition for all the children who have
attended their chosen sport or cultural
activity regularly. We are so blessed to
have children who are able to participate
and whose parents are so supportive
of what they do.
Summer Social 2012
Despite the rain our first social in many
years was a wonderful success. More
than three quarters of our own pupils
were there, many with friends or family
members. The lighting in the hall was
spectacular and the entire evening was
enjoyed by all. Thanks go to Paul Smith,
Dave Lowe and the team of helpers who
worked so hard to ensure that everything
went smoothly. Special mention must be
made of the good behaviour of the children
Santa’s Shoebox
Each year I am astounded by the generosity
shown by all the families who
choose to be involved in our outreach
project. St Columba’s Grade 5 group
have chosen the “Santa Shoebox” project
for the second year. This year we
Play time fun
We have been having plenty of fun, fitness
and giggles during break at the
“skipping zone.” Here are a few comments
from our skipping champs:
I enjoy skipping because it is fun and
makes me fit. I love skipping! (Isshani
Chhagan, 2W).
The skipping zone is awesome! We play
games we’ve never played before. We
learn new songs which is lots of fun, like
Spanish dancer and icka-bicka-boo. We
are put into groups and do different
things each day. So if you think skipping
isn’t fun think again. Come and join in
the fun!” (Kelo Mathe, 3V).
The skippingzone is the funnest zone in
the school! It include games like double
dutch and skipping races. I love skipping
it keeps you fit! Our coaches are
Mrs Worsley and sometimes Miss Dunn.

managed to donate 54 boxes! Mrs Conway
and I dropped all these boxes off
on Friday afternoon. Thank you to all
the Grade 5s and their parents for their
generosity. You have helped make 54
children’s Christmas memorable this

Child Safety should be top priority
We would like you as parents to bear in
mind at all times that, as the South African
law dictates:
1. Everyone in a motor vehicle must
wear a seatbelt.
2. It is a driver’s responsibility and
legal obligation to ensure that
children are buckled up in a car
safety seat (child seat) or seatbelt.
3. An adult is guilty of a criminal offence
if he/she should allow a
child younger than 14 years to
travel unrestrained in a motor vehicle
equipped with seat belts or
safety belts.
We love our children and appeal to you to
keep them safe on the roads.
You may notice the new toys in our classrooms
that we have purchased for your
child’s development and enjoyment. The
children are enjoying themselves as they
learn whilst playing!
We had Orientation Day yesterday for the
Art
We are looking for CDs that have been
damaged or corrupted that we can use
as a base for an art lesson. Please
drop off ion Grade 5C or the office.

Break Activities
We are in the process of introducing a
mixed zone play activity strategy that ensures
that every child has an enjoyable
playtime.
A range of skills- development based activities
are available and there has been a
positive response.
Play nurtures the development of creativity
and problem solving. Play provides the
means for understanding new connections
and relationships between ideas,
experiences, skills and knowledge. It also
supports the consolidation of learning as
it involves practice, rehearsal, repetition,
mastery and extension.
Play often involves energetic physical activity,
which releases oxygen to the brain,
helping to create good physical and men-

new children coming into school next
year. They all seem very excited and
were thrilled to meet their teacher for
next year.

Lost
Kayla Prothero has lost a brand new
book “The Silver Chair” by CS Lewis.
It is part of a collection and she would
be delighted to have it returned.

Thank you to Mrs Worsley for putting
her time and energy into ensuring that
the ‘Skipping Zone‘ is a success. Mrs
Zeelie for setting up the obstacle
courses and various activities in the
medium activity zone. Mr Nyawo for his
excellent skills and enthusiasm in the
high activity zone. Also a big thank you
to all the teachers on duty who have
been actively involved to ensure the
success of happy and positive playtimes.

Mini Cricket
On Thursday 11October, twenty four
very excited Grade One and Two boys
went to CBC to play their first match of
the term. Once the boys had settled
down and got over the initial feeling of
excitement and nervousness they
were able to play better and incorporated
the skills we practise on our
home grounds.
Grade Twos won by 6 runs
Grade One won by 10 runs
Grade One lost by 3 runs.
We look forward to many more matches
in the future.
