MetroStar 4000 - DatasheetProduct OverviewThe MS4000 is a Layer 2 access switchdesigned for network edge service control, network aggregation with high-performanceswitching and traffic classification andprioritization to deliver the ultimate userexperience. The MS4000 provides network operators, service providers, city networks, as well assmall and medium sized companies, with aversatile tool for their switching needs. TheMS4000 capability to prioritize and allocatebandwidth fairly between applications providemaximum throughput and responsiveness forservices even when used by many users at thesame time. The MS4000 is filled with features to delivervoice, video and data services and builds on theexperience of over 1,000,000 deployed fiberto-the-homeports of previous generationswitches from PacketFront. The MS4000 can be used in a variety ofnetwork topologies such as• Customer VLAN topology in combination witha Service Router with efficient multicastdistribution and optional RADIUS basedcontrol of ingress traffic,• Service VLAN topology where the MS4000performs service enforcement and a secureMACFF based network• TR-101 topologies with VLAN translation. The MS4000 can even perform PPPoEIntermediate Agent operation to support a mixof DHCP and PPPoE based services on thesame infrastructure.Security features such as IP strict clients canbe used with both dynamic and staticallyassigned addresses to prevent spoofing of IPtraffic.Extendable through the ScriBOS scriptlanguage, the MS4000 behavior can be easilyadapted to fit into a variety of serviceprovisioning solutions using e.g. DHCP orRADIUS to signal service parameters. Industrystandard CLI and SNMP support allows easymanagement and control of MS4000 operation. The MS4000 is available in two models; eitherwith 24 RJ-45 copper (MS4126) or 24 SFP(MS4026) Gigabit Ethernet portsBenefitsAdvanced traffic classification andforwardingThe MS4000 switch silicone has extensivetraffic classification support. The networkprocessor architecture of the MS4000 allowsfurther classification and forwarding usingadvanced algorithms based on Weighted FairQueuing (WFQ) scheduling and shaping. Trafficin both ingress and egress direction can behandled through the NPU in order to overcomethe traditional limitation of hardware queuesand switch silicone rate-limiting. The MS4000performs ingress and egress shaping of trafficresulting in a fair distribution of traffic betweenapplications and flows so that a single sessionor user cannot monopolize the bandwidth of aservice and block all other applications orservices.Fair allocation of traffic is fundamental to asatisfactory end user experience. Even whenend users consume all available bandwidth, applications remain responsive.Multi-rate supportThe SFP ports of the MS4000 support both100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s speeds, which meansthat upgrading access to a fiber network iseasy. In an existing Fast Ethernet network theCustomer gateway (CPE) can continue tooperate at 100Mbit/s when the access switchesare upgraded to the MS4000. Instead of forkliftupgrading all CPEs, each customer canobtain higher speed services when needed. Asimple reconfiguration in the MS4000 instantlyprovides 1 Gbit/s link speed if multi-rate SFPsare used. The 10Gbit/s ports also support 1Gbit/soperation and is fully compatible with both SFPand SFP+ optical modules.Customer and Service VLANtopologiesThe MS4000 can be used in a wide variety ofnetwork topologies and supports:• Ethernet wholesale with C-VLAN and S-VLAN,supporting double-tagging• Customer VLAN topologies with a centralService Router• Service VLAN topologies using DHCPsnooping for end-user and network securityCopyright © PacketFront Network Products AB. MetroStar 4000 - Datasheeto IP strict clients for anti-spoofingo ARP inspection provides increasedsecurityo MAC Forced Forwarding prevents layer 2interaction between clients in the VLANA major concern in Service Router deploymenttopologies is how to protect the network fromuser upstream bandwidth attacks. The naturalresponse is to use ingress rate-limiting on theaccess switch, but in Service Router topologiesthis both increases the number of devices thatrequires configuration and requires advancedrate-limiting functions to avoid a negativeimpact on traffic flows. The MS4000 can beadapted using ScriBOS to interact with DHCPor RADIUS servers to perform ingress shapingof traffic, thereby contributing to networkprotection and improved user experience.Multicast VLAN support and ability to createchannel packages allows optimal bandwidthutilization in the access at the same time asmaximum control of TV distribution is obtained. This effectively prevents card sharing as eachdownlink port can have its own unique channelpackage. MS4000 supports simultaneousforwarding of up to 2048 multicast groups. The MS4000 supports full VLAN range, up to4,096 vlans, including double-tagging, and16,000 MAC addresses.Automated deploymentThe MS4000 can be deployed into the networkdirectly out of the box. There is no need for preconfigurationof the switch before installation. When connected to the network, the switch willBOOTP for its management IP which allows acentral auto-configuration server to connect tothe switch and configure it.Connectors in the frontAll connectors for network, administration andpower are located in the front of the unit. Inaddition the MS4000 has a small form factor, only 26cm deep. This simplifies installationand makes the MS4000 fit into narrow spacesin multi-dwelling unit environments as well asdense deployment in central office or wiringclosetsites.Support for dual stack servicesThe exhaustion of IPv4 addresses means thatIPv6 deployment is now becoming mandatory inmany networks. MS4000 also supportsclassification on IPv6 including policies fortraffic management and QoS.Quality inspection of TVThe MS4000 can also inspect multicast MPEGstreams using the Realtime Protocol Monitoring(RPM) feature to measure the MPEG quality. The RPM feature supports MPEG over RTP aswell as UDP, and collects and analyzes metricsat RTP level, Transport Stream level andPacketized Elementary Stream level. The errorsdetected include:• sequence-error per RTP multicast group• jitter per RTP multicast group• missing-sync-byte per TS multicast group• misaligned per TS multicast groupAny detected errors can be logged, read usingSNMP, or shown by the ASR CLI. Each ASRthat runs RPM becomes a probe, capable ofmonitoring up to 50 TV channels at the sametime. If an end user reports a problem with theTV service, the RPM data provides animmediate notification if a problem is seen inthe network, and if it affected the entirenetwork or only a part of the network. The RPMdata may even help network engineers topinpoint the location of the problem in seconds, instead of the usual hours, or even days, ofmanual troubleshooting.Script motor - ScriBOSThe programmable script motor allowscustomized and autonomous service control.Service conditions and behavior can be adaptedto fit any type of existing service deploymentstructure used by operators. Existing RADIUSbased mechanisms, used for xDSL, can bereused by the MS4000 which reducesinvestment costs in the OSS system for serviceproviders when new services are deployed in thenetwork.Copyright © PacketFront Network Products AB.
