Welcome to <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>This is the year to be creative. Studies have shown that creativity can relievestress and bring balance to your life. Classes at <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> can help,whether you are looking to learn a new skill, revive an old one or wanting toexpress yourself in a new way.<strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> is a non-profit arts center dedicated to inspiring and educatingthe community in fine contemporary craft. We offer exhibitions, a galleryshop, education classes and community outreach programs. In addition toour Delmar Loop facility, we have recently opened a second location in GrandCenter, in mid-town St. Louis, so you can be part of the art and double yourarts experience. Learn how you can give the gift of art, either through a giftcertificate to one of our classes or in the Gallery Shop, where everything ishandmade.In this issue of the catalog, you can read about the Artists-in -Residence at theGrand Center location where you can come and see three artists work, askquestions and get inspired. Also read about one of our Delmar Loop artists,Bev Aroh, whose life was enriched after she walked into the clay studio.Look through these pages and find a class for yourself or your children andsee how to make art a part of your lives through entry-level, intermediate oradvanced classes and workshops taught by exceptional local, regional andnational artists. Why do artists do what theydo? How do they do it? Now you can find out—byvisiting with the Artists-in-Residence at <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>in Grand Center! Contemporary artists Gina Alvarez,Melody Evans and Damia Smith are <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>’spremier Artists-in-Residence, and we think you shouldget to know them. These talented women have verydifferent backgrounds and use different media, but theyall add to the community and richness of art offeringswe have been working to create at our Grand Centerlocation. When visitors come to the Education Center,they will find Gina, Melody and Damia working in theirstudios at least twenty hours a week, where they createnew art as individuals and in collaboration with eachother. Theses artists engage visitors in conversationabout art and answer the questions that people haveabout their work.Gina Alvarez earned a BA in Studio Art from the Collegeof Charleston in Charleston, SC, and her MFA inPrintmaking/Drawing from Washington University in St.Louis. She experiments with new materials, and usesher printmaking skills in two- and three-dimensionalwork. She creates objects that can stand alone ortogether in an installation, and she invites visitorsto view her work both as individual pieces and asgroupings that create a specific environment. DamiaSmith creates metal sculptures and wearable art,and brings to the table a BFA in Metalsmithing and aBS in Art Education from Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville. Damia says her work is inspired bynatural growth: “Through my work I am investigatingthe idea of growth and division as natural processesthat occur in all organisms.” She finds inspiration inmicroscopic forms and other natural structures. MelodyEvans, a clay artist, brings over 18 years experienceto the Artist-in-Residence program. Her creations arefascinating clay forms that contain elements of daily lifeand also reflect the importance of place. Melody earneda BA from Lindenwood University in St. Charles and anMA from California State University in Sacramento.Gina, Melody and Damia are also involved in allaspects of <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>’s programming, includingclasses, outreach programs, free public presentationsand gallery installations. Standing at the front desk, shesuddenly asked, “Do I smell clay?” Then the door to the claystudio opened and she saw the wheels, saw the large gas kiln andsaid “I am in heaven. How can I work here?”Self taught as a studio production potter in California, Bev gaveup clay for several years while she worked in the airline industry.It was that job that brought her to St. Louis to live. Once shediscovered <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>, she became immersed in takingclasses and working with clay. She took classes with Dan Barnett,Mary Henderson and others and when a part-time studio assistantposition became available, she was ready. As an assistant, Bevkeeps an eye on the kilns, cleans the studios and organizesthe flow of pieces to be fired. She says, “Our studios are full ofeager students practicing new skills alongside a sizable group ofaccomplished artists producing bodies of work. The atmosphereis fun and friendly and when my tasks are done, I join the crowdand plunge my hands into the clay too.”Bev is also a member of the <strong>Craft</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> faculty and teachesclasses in both wheel throwing and glazing. She teaches clay classes to people of allages, has participated in workshops around the countryand exhibits in California and St. Louis.Batya Rich began taking classes at <strong>Craft</strong> five yearsago and now focuses on glass fusing and lampworkingwith a specialty in Judiaca. She holds two firstplace international jewelry design awards—(Saul BellDesign Award-www.saulbellaward.com) in the beadcategory for 2006, 2007. In July 2005 she was filmedand featured on HGTV.
