Starting Point: <strong>Hythe</strong> Pier1 Starting at the pier, turn left into HighStreet <strong>and</strong> <strong>walk</strong> along until youreach a T junction.2 Turn left to the water front, crossroad, turn right <strong>and</strong> follow gravelpath. Bear right <strong>and</strong> continue ongravel path leading through thetrees. Take the first right off the path<strong>and</strong> cross the road.3 Turn left <strong>and</strong> follow pavementaround to the right. At theinformation board turn left, crossingSt Johns Street <strong>and</strong> onto The Marsh.4 Use the pedestrian crossing <strong>and</strong>continue ahead through the PylewellPrecinct. Take a right turn just beforeyou reach the Library <strong>and</strong> at thejunction with School Road turn left.5 Continue ahead <strong>and</strong> over the levelcrossing, take the next road junctionto the right <strong>and</strong> <strong>walk</strong> on untilreaching Jones Lane.6 Turn right <strong>and</strong> follow the path upover the Railway Bridge. CrossBrinton Lane <strong>and</strong> continue alonguntil you reach the Police Station.Follow the path to the right intoProspect Place.7 Continue past the small park by thewaterfront <strong>and</strong> you are back tothe pier.<strong>Hythe</strong> Pier was built in 1880 at a cost of £7,000, since1922 the little electric train has been busily conveyingferry passengers along its 700 yards of track making itBritain's oldest continuously operating pier train.<strong>Hythe</strong> grew up as a settlement of fishermen, ferrymen<strong>and</strong> farmers who lived around a tidal lagoon with a verynarrow entrance through which small boats could passto moor in the sheltered water. These natural featuresmade <strong>Hythe</strong> an ideal place for a ferry link between theNew Forest <strong>and</strong> Southampton
