Project Development• since 2008: digital film restoration in Krems• 3 partner institutions: Austrian Film Museum,Austrian Film Archive, Austrian Film Gallery• Funding: bmukk (Federal Ministry for Education,Arts & Culture, Austria), Lower Austria (provincialgovernment), EU funds (ERDF: European RegionalDevelopment Fund)
Project Workflow: 3 Steps• Scan analogue film material (Arri scanner)• Restore the digital material (software Diamant):e.g. color correction, dust and scratch removal,substitution of image elements, image stabilization• Print it back on film for long-term preservation(Arri Laser)
Digital Restoration: Goals• To preserve and restore film material from thecollections of both partner institutions• To develop a professional discourse on ethicalstandards in digital restoration• ”To preserve is to show”:film archives aim togain access to film heritage for present andfuture audiencesDCP distribution will open up wider distribution ofheritage films, also to non-FIAF venues
Project Challenges• Pioneer project: prototype technology• 3 partners with different interests• Digital restoration offers many tools, which allowpowerful manipulation (obligation to notover-restore)• Film archives must develop ethical standards
