Download the Journey at www.thejourneymag.comFrom the PublisherHave you ever noticed how noisythe world is? We are bombardedby external noises wherever we go.Constant and sometimes annoying noises thatchallenge us to listen. I relish the moments ofquiet. No one talking, no TV, radio, or any ofthe usual background noises we hear.Of course, these times of silence are fewand far between, probably I guess becauseour outer world is just a reflection of ourinner world. How often are we able to stopthe chatter and constant dialogue withinour minds? How can we listen if we are onoverload with noise, external or internal?Meditation, to me, is the deepest form oflistening. Many people tell me they have sucha difficult time in their attempts at meditation. They cannot get the chatter to subside. Isimply say to them to embrace the chatter andstop resisting, for what we resist will persist.May.June.2009 | Issue 46Listening to Inner Voice Guides Popular Medium |6By TC BrownLearning To Listen To Spirit |10By Sharon Anne KlinglerRachel, are you listening? |12By Laura LeeLessons From The Owl|14By Eva StarrHealth & Nutrition | 17-20 Yoga | 25-28Good vs. Evil —What Are You Listening To?By Janee Kuta-IlianoPlanetary Pathway |32 - 33Listening and LovemakingBy Psalm IsadoraThe Yoga Sutras of Pantajali has a section thatis devoted to the eight limb path of ashtangayoga. The fifth limb is called pratyahara. Thislimb deals with the withdrawal of senses, including hearing of course. An exercisein withdrawal is to focus on and examinenoise instead of attempting to block or resistit. When we do this the noise mysteriouslydissolves. This is part of a process to emptythe mind prior to meditation. The ego loves the noise. Perhaps even thrivesupon it. I was told once that the ego speaksfirst and loudest and that is why we mustlisten quietly for the still small voice of God.May we each find that voice and listen to ourguidance to be an inspiration to all we areconnected with.— Namaste’ ClydePublisher CLYDE CHAFEREditor TC BROWNAssistant Editor EVA STARRProofreader KATIE KRANCEVICAdvertising Manager CLYDE CHAFER | 440.223.1392Advertising Sales Janet Bennett 216-406-4281Advertising Manager Columbus - Janet Bennett 216-406-4281Layout BILL WAHL | 440.552.8622 & HANK WILSONFeature Writers TC BrownPsalm IsadoraSharon Anne KlinglerJanee Kuta-IlianoLaura LeeF. ContributorsTHE JOURNEYSharon Anne KlinglerPracticing a receptive alpha brainwave is the ticket to cultivating adialogue with your spirit to helpyou learn to listen, says one of thismonth’s contributing writers SharonAnne Klingler. Start with a simplequestion, like “Where will I find aparking spot,” she recommends.Klingler also provides an easy butthought-provoking exercise to helpreaders get in touch with their spirits.Make it a regular practice andyou will reap the rewards that sheoutlines in her piece.Laura LeeA timely license plate provides awake up call and saves the day for arushed Laura Lee, who tells an interestingtale about an encounter with acaller on a radio talk show. You can almost see the sweat onher brow as she and the caller strainto grasp the message she receivesin her story titled “Rachel, are youlistening?” Listening to messagesis an important and powerful facetof life that we don’t always want toacknowledge, she says.Psalm IsadoraListening is more than just hearingsomeone else express themselves,it’s also about tuning into the soundsand feeling of nature, because it toohas a story to tell, says contributingwriter Psalm Isadora. When listeningbecomes deep enough to be a totalexperience, you can lose yourself, including that interfering, yappy voiceof ego. Isadora likens listening to aform of prayer or devotion that canenvelop all things, even eating andsex. Now who doesn’t want to hearto that message? She helps us byproviding exercises to tune into bothactivities.MAY • JUNE 2009“Amaster in Zen is notsimply a teacher. In allthe religions there areonly teachers. They teach you aboutsubjects which you don’t know, andthey ask you to believe because there isno way to bring those experiences intoobjective reality. Neither has the teacherknown them - he has believed them; hetransfers his belief to somebody else. Zenis not a believer’s world. It is not for thefaithful ones; it is for those daring soulswho can drop all belief, unbelief, doubt, reason, mind, and simply enter into theirpure existence without boundaries. Butit brings a tremendous transformation.Hence, let me say that while others areinvolved in philosophies, Zen is involvedin metamorphosis, in a transformation. It is authentic alchemy: it changesyou from base metal into gold. But itslanguage has to be understood, not withyour reasoning and intellectual mindbut with your loving heart. Or even justlistening, not bothering whether it is trueor not. And a moment comes suddenlythat you see it, which has been eludingyou your whole life. Suddenly, whatGautam Buddha called “eighty-fourthousand doors” open.”—OshoPAGE FIVE

Listening to Inner VoiceGuides Popular MediumBe a listeneronly, keep withinyourself, andendeavor toestablish withyourself the habitof silence— Thomas JeffersonBy TC BrownThe dictionary defines listening as“being alert and ready to hear something,”and the art of listening can meanmany things to different people. Formedium James Van Praagh, the termholds an interior quality.“For me it is an awareness to hearthat inner voice,” says Van Praagh, ina recent telephone interview from hishome in southern California. “That innervoice is truth and knowledge.”That innermost voice that speaks toeveryone, if they take time to pay attentionand listen, is an important guide,Van Praagh says.“You will be much more aware ofwho you are when you listen to it,” hesays. “When you think, you are in yourhead and you look at life differently. When you listen to the inner part ofyour heart the veil opens up. You canclearly see life, all of its elements andwhat it means.”Listening is a pivotal aspect of VanPraagh’s work as a “survival evidencemedium.” Along the way he’s gainedsome fame, and some detractors, in thepursuit of his mission to change theconsciousness of the world. He saysthat his abilities allow him to receivemessages from spirits and feelings abouttheir presence. It permits him to providedetailed evidence that a person’s lovedone has survived death.Van Praagh is a best selling authorof several books that examine spiritualityand communication with spiritsand which have been translated into 50languages. He helped develop and coproduce, for the first two years, the verypopular TV series “Ghost Whisperer”and he was the first medium to appearon “Larry King Live” when he promotedhis first best seller “Talking to Heaven”in 1999. He has appeared on many othershows, including “Oprah,” “20/20” andPAGE SIX MAY • JUNE 2009 THE JOURNEY

“48 Hours.”From 2002 to 2003, he hosted a syndicateddaytime talk show entitled “BeyondWith James Van Praagh,” whichis still in syndication. With CBS, heproduced several TV-movies and miniseriesbased on his life and experiences, including “Living With The Dead” and“The Dead Will Tell.” Occasionally heappears as a special correspondent forthe CBS television series “The Insider”and “Entertainment Tonight.”Howard Rosenberg, the Los AngelesTime television critic, has called VanPraagh’s performances “spectacular.”Van Praagh will appear at The JourneyExpo 2009 at Lakeland CommunityCollege in Kirtland, Ohio from 1-4p.m. Sunday, September 13. See: www.vanpraagh.com for his Web site.Early on, Van Praagh didn’t map outthis career for his own life’s journey. The youngest of four children and raisedRoman Catholic, Van Praagh grew up inBayside, New York. One Saturday morningwhile lying in bed when he was 8 hehad his first encounter with extraordinary, spiritual phenomena.“I was not quite awake and I wasasking for God to show me proof heexisted,” Van Praagh says.He received an unexpected andstartling answer. A large open palmsurrounded by a brilliant golden light appearedthrough his bedroom’s ceiling.“The apparition was right there,” VanPraagh says. “There was an overwhelming,multi-sensory feeling and a strongknowingness that this was God and thatGod was everything.“It enveloped me with a sense oflove,” he says.Van Praagh’s strict Catholic upbringingprompted him at age 14 to enter apreparatory seminary.“As a kid I always was aware thatthere was something greater and biggerthan this world,” he says. “I thought itwas a calling.” But during that first yearJames Van Praagh, world-renowned psychic medium, best-selling author and formerco-executive producer of the CBS drama, “The Ghost Whisperer” will appearat The Journey Expo at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio from1-4 p.m. Sunday, September 13. See: www.thejourneymag.comon Easter weekend in a room off the altar,a strong sentiment washed over himthat “God is much bigger than these fourwalls.” He left the seminary.Meditation Opens the WayVan Praagh eventually made his wayto California and in 1982 graduatedwith a broadcasting and communicationsdegree from San Francisco StateUniversity. He moved to Los Angeles topursue a career in television writing. He drifted from one temporary jobto another, but it was after a friendconvinced him to see a local mediumthat he developed a renewed interest inthe metaphysical. The medium told himthings no one else would know and heissued a startling prophecy.“He predicted that in two years timethe spirit world would use me,” VanPraagh recalls. “He said that missionwould be to help change the consciousTHE JOURNEYMAY • JUNE 2009PAGE SEVEN

ness of the planet.“It was overwhelming because all Iwanted to do was write sitcoms,” he says.“But it piqued my interest.”Van Praagh began to devour books onlife after death, discovering a commontheme about finding a soul’s purpose, and he began to practice something thathas since become critical to his work --meditation.Within months of this practice hebegan to see lights and then hazy figuresaround people. The more he meditated, the more powerful and detailed the visions. When he envisioned the grandmotherof a co-worker and was able todescribe her house perfectly, he freakedout, but at that point there was no turningback.Van Praagh built his early career withprivate readings but quickly graduatedto wider audiences with a series of audiotapes, books, and eventually the televisionappearances that drew nationalexposure.Van Praagh uses meditation to openhimself into a receptive state before everyworkshop and after so many years ofpractice, he says it is not unlike pushinga button.“I open up the chakras, the energycenters, and it’s like a radio,” Van Praaghsays. “You turn on and tune into a frequency.”Van Praagh says he connects with“guides,” asks for their help and protectionand then become a vessel for whatever they have in mind.“They are the ones who are in chargeof what comes through and what theworkshop will be like,” he says. VanPraagh describes his abilities as “clairsentient,”which he says means clear feeling.”“I feel the emotions and personalitiesof the deceased,” he says, adding that heis also clairvoyant, which allows him tosee the spirit in a solid form.Van Praagh no longer does individualreadings. He believes the spirits want himto work with more people to spread theword to a wider audience and to teachothers to tune in.Many people at his workshops areunfamiliar with him and many harborfear or apprehension.“I try to make them see I am a normalperson to make them feel comfortable,”he says. “I can sense when they change.I feel the energy of the room and thepeople.”Good VibrationsThe medium experience is an “amazingroller coaster ride,” Van Praagh says.Once people experience it, their livesare changed, he says. Recently he wassurprised when a long-haired, leather cladbiker showed up. He was not the typicalonlooker.Van Praagh says he saw the man’sdead son standing next to him. “He toldme to tell his father he didn’t feel theground when he hit his head. He alsosaid to thank his dad for the tattoo he putacross his chest,” Van Praagh says. The biker was astounded. He hadbeen suffering much pain over his son’sloss in a sky diving accident. And he hadthe boy’s name, “Michael,” etched acrosshis chest.“He said, ‘You are ****ing unbelievable, man,’” Van Praagh says. “He didn’tknow what to do with this information.”Not everyone is a believer. VanPraagh has earned his share of critics, inparticular Michael Shermer who callsVan Praagh a fraud. Shermer says VanPraagh is little more than a showmanwho asks lots of questions and thenmakes numerous general and specificstatements to see what sticks. An occasionalstrike is enough to convince peoplehe is the real deal, Shermer says. For his part, Van Praagh says hewelcomes skeptics but he has no time forcynics. Sharp criticism often comes frompeople whose way of thinking is beingchallenged, he says.“A cynic’s mind is already made up,”he says. “I don’t have time for that. Ihave time for skepticism. I started out asa skeptic.”More and more people are turningtoward things spiritual, Van Praagh believes. He says the vibration of the planetis speeding up, which is a good thing becausethe fastest vibration in the universeis love. The changes go hand-in-handwith his desire to expand the consciousnessof the world.“Value systems are changing,” VanPraagh says. “Fifteen years ago youcould hardly find a book about death orghost shows on television. People noware much more aware of their bodies andeach other.”Van Praagh new book, released inMay, is titled “Unfinished Business.”He calls it a manual on how to live life.He says it’s the most personal book he’swritten.“The dead can teach us about life,” hesays. “There is no ‘would of, should ofcould of’ in life.“The most common message thatcomes through for me is how we treatsomeone on Earth,” he says. “Take thehigh road and treat people as they want tobe treated.”And, according to Van Praagh, if weall just listen to that inner voice, we willbe shown the way.“All choices are based on love andfear,” he says. “Listen acutely and youwill make the correct choices in life.”PAGE EIGHT MAY • JUNE 2009 THE JOURNEY

Learning To Listen To SpiritBy Sharon Anne KlinglerOne of the most important ways of learningto listen inside is through meditation. Indeed, if you want to truly cultivate a dialoguewith your spirit, it’s necessary topractice a relaxed, receptive alpha brain wave state ofmeditating everyday. Beyond meditation, it’s also imperativeto practice opening up to your inner voice during yourwaking life. You can start with simple questions, which don’t necessarilyhave to carry heavy emotional weight. “Which rowhas a parking space for me?” “Will the person I’m phoningbe home?” Or even, “Which class is best for me?” Get thepicture? Then, just “listen” inside for the first answer youget. It’s important that you be spontaneous with this andnot get attached to the outcomes in any way. These frequentquestions simply allow you to practice your listening(or clairaudient) abilities many times each day. Andalthough some of these situations seem incidental, overan extended period of time you will find many benefitsthat would not otherwise be available to you through alphalevel experiences only. Here’s a little exercise you can do now and many timesthroughout your day to touch in: Close your eyes and askyour spirit to give you a word, just one word right now.Trust the first thing you get! What is it? You can changethis little process in many ways. Ask for a sound, an image,a song, or a symbol or a feeling. Just keep it simpleand spontaneous. You’ll find that your outreach to yourspirit will bring you insight and other benefits you couldn’thave imagined.Benefits of Active Listening Every Day• The Building of Trust: This is certainly the most importantbenefit. Whether you find a parking space or knowwho’s calling on the phone isn’t nearly as important as thefact that you’re asking spirit, both yours and your guides’,to “talk” to you. By initiating these mini-dialogues, youallow yourself to open to the directions and to follow theinput you receive from your intuition and from spirit.• Increasing Your Awareness: The more you allow yourselfto receive input from spirit, the more sensitive you willbe to receiving that guidance in the future. You will getused to talking to your spirit as a normal event throughoutyour day.• Creating an Open Door and a Stronger Connection:PAGE TENMAY • JUNE 2009This third benefit of extended practice is not only for you,but also for spirit. After several months of practice, youwill be receiving input from spirit about many things beforeyou even ask for it – even in situations in which itwouldn’t occur to you to ask for advice or assistance. Byopening yourself to frequent communication with your spiritand with your spirit guides, you not only strengthen yourpreparedness to perceive them, you also strengthen theirability to make contact when they wish it, not just whenyou want it.• Strengthening the Significance of the Message. Thelast benefit of frequent, consistent, conscious communicationwith spirit is in the quality of the content you receive. You may, day in and day out, be practicing withlittle questions about where to find your keys or whetheror not to bring your umbrella. But one day, when you aremaking an important decision about a situation in yourbusiness or personal life, you’ll find that the informationyou need will be there. You will also find that informationto be reliable and helpful. Still, even if you find the significanceof your intuitive messages growing, it is not a signfor you to discontinue your little practices with the smaller“less important” dialogues. Daily communication aboutlittle things will allow you to open to a greater and moreintimate relationship with your own spirit and with yourguides. And let’s face it, sometimes it’s more fun just to betogether with spirit. (After all, do you discuss the meaningof life every time you go out for coffee with friends?)So, keep taking little moments to invite your spirit intoyour life throughout your day. In little ways and large waysyou will know the blessings of a vision that knows nobounds.Sharon is a leading international intuitive who has runa successful private practice for more than 25 years. It’sher desire that all people know the great presence of spirit– both the spirit within them and the guides beyond theveil who seek to share their knowledge and assistance. Rachel, are you listening?By Laura LeeThe red light seemed like eternity. My fingerstapped impatiently on the steering wheel. Theradio announced that I’d soon be answeringquestions from callers at the top of the hour.My foot slammed on the gas pedal when the signal turnedgreen. Still another 10 minutes before airtime. I took arisk and sped through town swerving around cars.Slow down. My guidance insisted. There is enoughtime.I ignored this advice. Onward full throttle, until I cameupon the bumper of an SUV with a license plate that read“LISTEN.”“Okay....Okay,” I called out. “I hear you!”My foot slid off the pedal when I saw the squad carsitting conspicuously off the main road, pointing a radargun toward oncoming traffic.“Thank you!” I sighed, smiling in gratitude. I had justfinished traffic school a few weeks ago for a prior speedingticket and vowed to obey the law walking out of class.Yet just like a speed junky, old habits die hard without athought to the consequences. As my guidance had promised, I arrived at the studiowith time to spare. Still, I jumped over double steps upthe stairwell and threw open the door. Radio hosts Janetand Tom were seated in the studio reporting the morningnews. One smiled as I took off my coat and quickly slidinto my chair, with pen and paper in preparation for myfirst reading. Taking a deep inhale, I closed my eyes beforereceiving my first caller.“We have Rachel on the line,” Tom announced. “Doyou have a question for Laura Lee?”“Ah, yes, Laura. I attended one of your Spirit Salonsand didn’t get a chance to ask you what you may see forme and my husband in the coming year.”“Thanks Rachel for coming out to see me and I appreciateyour call,” I relayed. “I see a woman on your rightside which would indicate a mother figure. It is also possiblethat’s she’s a mother in-law. Does that make senseto you?”“Yeah, my mother-in-law is on the other side.”I nervously scribbled lines across my note pad backand forth. “She is showing me shifting sand beneath yourfeet which causes me to believe you and your husbandfeel like you’re not on solid ground. Do you understand?”“Mmmmm, I think we’re good,” she said pensively. “Ifeel like we’re pretty solid.”I set my pen down to allow more information to filterthrough.“She is indicating a job and or career change for yourPAGE TWELVEMAY • JUNE 2009husband. She is showing me more than one job. Theremight be several. One appears to be a part-time, whichrequires additional schooling. This particular opportunitymay become more permanent as a result. Does this resonate?”“Uhhh, no. He isn’t going back to school. So I’m notsure what you’re referring to exactly.”I’m shifting in my seat now. On another inhale, I closedmy eyes and ask the mother-in-law to offer confirmationto Rachel. And boom, just like that, I have it from her.“I hear the name Jack,” I said. “Is there someonearound you with that name?”“That’s my husband’s name.”“That’s your confirmation then that what she’s tellingus is true, that he will be returning to school and thiswill put him in position for a more permanent position.”“Ohhhh, yes,” she said giggling, “Jack was a substituteteacher and they have asked him to come on fulltime.”Radio host, Tom, threw his hands in the air. Janet, his co-host, shook her head.“Well then,” I said, “It makes sense now. Tell yourhusband his Mom has intervened in your prayers. Thisnew career path will provide you the solid foundationyou’ve both been seeking for a long time. I’m happy tohear you both will be experiencing better times. What ablessing, because she also claims you’re soon coveredby necessary insurances, steady income and other benefitsas well. All this will allow you to relax about yourfinances in the coming year, and even in years to come.”“Yes,” she said, “It hasn’t been exactly riches, butwe’re not on the street either.”“That sounds real good Rachel,” Tom intercepted.“We’re happy for you and appreciate your call.”A commercial recording cuts in as we take off ourheadphones to talk.“Does this happen to you all the time?” Tom quizzed, thoroughly exasperated, “I mean, why don’t they just listen?!”“Good question,” I said. “If they don’t listen to themselves, what makes you think they’ll hear it from a professional?”“But why then do they call for advice,” questionedJanet.“I believe spirit will always find a way to get the messageacross, particularly if it’s for our highest good. SometimesI deliver messages that my clients instinctively orintuitively know, such as Rachel. She just wasn’t ready toacknowledge it yet.”THE JOURNEY

“And why wouldn’t we,” Tom inquired, as if from personalexperience. My mind wandered to the license plate incident on myway to the studio and how I eventually heeded the call.“If we really listen and make a decision based on thatguidance, we are more likely to be held accountable forour actions. Personally, that is a lot of power to behold. Ittakes courage to live in that space because we charterunknown territory.”I paused to reflect on the thought and added, “Thispresents a very scary situation for most people. Yet thepayoff has dividends, like it did for Rachel and her husband. And usually, it’s real good.”Laura Lee is scheduled to perform before James VanPraagh at the Journey Expo on Sunday, September 13 at10 a.m.Laura Lee is a popular medium on the syndicatedradio show “After Life” and Magic 100.7 in Illinois.Laura’s appeared on television networks such as TLC,PBS, Discovery Channel and Game Show Network. Lessons From The OwlBy Eva StarrAs I was raising my youngest daughter Shayna, who is now 19, I remember countless timeswhen I was trying to explain to her something that I wanted her to do. She would thenstart giving me reasons why she should not comply, mostoften when she was a teenager, and all of a sudden the twoof us would be talking at once. I would stop, wait a secondor two, look at her, and quietly say, “What is happeninghere when two people are talking?” She would look at mewhile rolling her eyes and sarcastically say, “Then nobodyis listening.”This was instilled in her from early on. From the momentshe could talk, I explained to her the importance oflistening to another without interrupting when they are speakingand why that was valuable. This type of communication, however, did not take place in the household I grew upin. When I was younger and would try to explain somethingto my mother, she started talking before I could finish. Nothingever got solved and I felt I was not “heard.”I love the English language, which is why I’m a writer. Ialso love debating, but in a debate one person talks and theother one listens and vice versa. Can you imagine in thepresidential debates if they didn’t have a mediator to refereeeach candidate? The mediator ensures each candidateis given the opportunity to speak without interruption fromthe other one.In today’s society, we communicate with people everyday, some of us more than others, depending on our jobs. Inthe next conversation you have, try to pay attention to howmany people start talking before someone else has finishedsaying what he or she has to say. This is not only rude, butit sends a message that what you have to say is more importantthan the person who was talking, which invalidatestheir importance as a human being. Although this is donehabitually, a majority of people are oblivious that it is happening. It’s rarely intentional; it’s simply a matter of lack ofawareness. It’s amazing when you’ve been givena role specifically to listen for certain details and you beginto realize how important listening is in developing your inter-personalskills as a human being.I wonder how often God tries talking to us, but we’re sobusy telling Him/Her what our plans are, that we’re not listeningto what God has to say. No wonder so many of us arewalking this planet totally clueless. My understanding of ourconversations with God is this: Prayer is when you talk toGod, meditation is when you listen to God. It makes totalsense to me. In the silence you listen, upon listening youhear the messages that God communicates to you from deepwithin.Listening as ArtListening is a developed art, not something that you’reborn with. I’m certain there are a few of you who could sharea story or two about the horrors of Internet dating. How manytimes did you sit there listening (or pretending to listen) tothe other person go on and on about themselves withoutgiving you a chance to get a word in edgewise? For thoseskilled in the art of listening, that, in itself, says somethingabout the individual you’re sitting with. Listening is differentfrom hearing. It is in listening that you can uncover the hiddenmysteries of the soul and learn a great deal more aboutthe person you’re with.It was Einstein who said “If A equals success, then theformula is A equals X plus Y and Z, with X being work, Yplay and Z keeping your mouth shut.” Much can be learnedfrom the above statement. This man is considered a genius.Let’s heed Einstein’s advice and spend more time listeningand less time talking. Practice it today. I’m willing to bet thefarm that you’d be amazed how often you want to put yourtwo cents in before another is finished speaking.Take the time to listen to a child, there’s much wisdomthere. Its innocence and vulnerability that hasn’t been scarredby adults that lie behind the child’s words. Take the time tolisten to your significant other. Maybe, just maybe, they’vebeen trying to communicate something to you for monthsthat you just haven’t heard because you haven’t been listening.Take the time to listen to an elderly person who’sclose to making their transition, for truly you will hear crucialwords of wisdom if you listen.I would like to take the time here to thank Clyde Chafer, founder and publisher of “The Journey” magazine for givingme the opportunity to express my thoughts through thewritten word in “The Journey” for the last seven-plus years.THE JOURNEY

Good vs. Evil —What Are You Listening To?It is said that we are living in the middle of a spiritualwar. A war between good and evil that cannotbe fought with our own two hands or with physicalweapons. This battle between good and evil haslong been present. Spiritual writings, books and movies allcomment on this ever-present duality in life. So let’s take alook at what good and evil are as they apply to our lives.Let’s start to identify which side we live on and listen too.Evil finds opportunity to torment and lie to us everyday. Evil finds its way into every weakness we have. In amoment of weakness, it inserts thoughts into our head aboutpeople, circumstances, God and other things in order tomold us into a perverted, fearful way of thinking and living. You may think that someone is out to make your life miserable, but there may be greater forces at work. When we live by our fleshly desires we open ourselvesup to more than just a mere fleeting pleasure. We allow evilto come in and set up camp. We begin listening to the voicethat justifies our actions even when good tries to guide usotherwise. Before long, we live in the flesh by mere habit. We live in condemnation for our bad decisions and begin tothink that something is wrong with us instead of realizing itis the evil we unknowingly invited in that is the problem. This can happen quickly and quite innocently, withoutus even knowing the source. Instead of recognizing the spiritualfactors at play, we internalize our self-destructive behaviorsas our flaws. Or, other times we begin to feel as ifwe are the victim and start to blame others for our unhappiness. We feel unworthy of good fortune in life because wethink we are not doing what we should be doing with ourtime. So what we think comes to fruition and the viciouscycle begins. Can you relate to this? What does good look and feellike? This can be left up to different interpretations. I believe, however, that good gives us a strong understandingof who we really are. Good consists of having peace of mindand spirit. It opens our heart to unconditional love for others.Good wants us to feel loved. It wants us to know that nomatter what we do, we are forgiven as quickly as the act isdone as long as we recognize the slip. I relate it to howparents quickly forgive their children for any wrongdoingsbecause the love is unconditional. When we eagerly seek a peace-filled life and give upour carnal thoughts and loose living, good rejoices andTHE JOURNEYBy Janee Kuta-IlianoMAY • JUNE 2009comes to the rescue. Good wants us to lean on it for guidance. It wants us to have full faith that it will deliver us fromharmful choices. Good gives us the ability to know the realtruth about life and to identify evil’s lies. It gives us style andgrace to accomplish things we would never be able to do onour own.Good creates unshakeable people. In the midst of chaos,we can learn to remain calm and centered at each givenmoment. We bear fruit in all areas of our lives and all thatwe touch prospers. That doesn’t mean life will continuallycome up roses when we surrender to good, but we are givenstrength to overcome trials more quickly and efficiently. Ifwe don’t know who we are, we may find ourselves in thesame challenging circumstances over and over again becausewe have not fully sided with and believed in the abilityof good to deliver us from evil.Take the PlungeThere is no real decision to side with evil, it is somethingthat can overtake us involuntarily if we are not mindful. To side with good, however, is a completely consciousdecision that requires effort. Oftentimes, suffering as strongholdsare loosed and wrong mindsets that have held us backfor so long are corrected. There can sometimes be a completedeliverance into good, but for others it is a gradualstep-by-step process to unravel all the wrong thinking andwrongdoing. If we want good to work on us quickly, we have to takethe plunge and completely surrender our entire life to it.Good can only give what we are open too. Good doesn’twant part of us, it wants all of us. It wants to listen to ourthoughts and desires. It wants to know our concerns withour jobs, our home and our social life. The more we surrenderand ask, the more divine guidance we open ourselvesup to and we start growing by leaps and bounds. So what is fueling your life? Is it thoughts about theworld not being safe or that you have to protect what you’vegot because others can come and take it away? Do youthink no one is to be trusted and if you want somethingdone, you better do it yourself? Or do you subscribe tothoughts of everlasting faith, trust, peace, love and nonresistance? How many of you are confused about your future? Is ithard for you to know your purpose? listening to the self destructive lies of evil? Have you foundyourself caught up in the rat race, losing your peace witheach given day? Does it feel like life is a struggle and thelittlest things set you off with fear about the future and whattomorrow will bring? Is it possible that you may have beeninfluenced by the side of evil?I have spent many years of my life trying to figure outme! What a complicated mess I created. I was never sure ifthe thoughts in my head were real or not. I was looking forsigns to point me in the right direction, but still I kept comingup empty-handed. Life felt heavy and the harder I triedto be happy and peaceful, the more I kept pushing it away.I now know that when you surrender your life to good, yourlife begins to reveal itself.Confusion does not come from good and anything thatsteals your peace, anything, is not from good. Awarenessand full faith is all you need to find your way back to yourauthentic self. It is said not to worry or be anxious abouttomorrow for today is sufficient with troubles of its own.Learn to take life as it comes and live in faith that you willbe protected and provided for. Run into the arms of goodand it will shelter you from the evil that may be lurking inyour life.I know this with all my heart and want nothing morethan for all of us to come together in this spiritual war andtell the enemy where to go. This is our time to rejoice. Weare such beautiful people and we no longer need to be controlledby forces that wish to steal our peace and have uslive a life of fear. PAGE TWENTY TWOThe Pattern of Renewal:What to Look forand Help Bring ForthF. Christopher Reynolds, M.EdThere is a transformative renewal of our region thathas been going on the past few years. It is rising upfrom the grassroots level, is visionary, inspiring and hasbeen changing persons one at a time.It takes the form of small centers that focus on creativity, spirituality and healing. They go by names like,Angel House, Inner Harmony, Creative Healing Center,Wellness Evolution, Insight, Spiritual Quest Foundation,Circle of Light Integrative Healing and Sacred Arts Center, and so on. At the heart of each of the centers arepersons who experienced ‘Callings’ with the capital “C”to bring healing to where they live.If you listen to the stories of the Callings, in everycase, they are spiritual experiences in the classic sense, including the presence of spiritual beings, divine guidance, healing and empowerment. These centers haveall taken root with little money and lots of faith. The identifyingpattern of this wave of renewal is that it is holistic, meaning whole in the deepest sense: physical, psychological, spiritual, ecological and cosmological. The identifying mark in the general population forthose who are also living this pattern of renewal is thatof the “orphan.” By orphan, I certainly mean literally, but also metaphorically. They are the persons deemed “not good enough tokeep”, the “sick” ones degraded, ignored, out of place, seemingly born at the wrong time. In the old initiationstories, which are stories about how individuals transformtheir cultures, the heroes are all of this kind, a raggedyboy, a lost girl, a stepchild, son or daughter of awidow. In our time, the general pattern is that the world, asperceived by the orphan, is much more expansive, meaningful, loving and merged with spiritual realities than the“real” world as delineated by the current family, educational, religious, political, scientific and technologicalsystems. The resultant isolation and suffering brings theorphans to a crisis point that many do not survive. Theindividuals who do manage to find the healing informationfor their lives, usually through a form of death andrebirth experience, are now gathering in greater numbersat our local creativity and healing centers. The renewal our region is seeking has already beenquietly underway for some years now. This essay is aCalling in itself to those who would be leaders to invitethose centers and individuals who have been living inthis renewed, holistic manner into public awareness. There is an astounding amount of wisdom for ourtimes waiting to be welcomed home and permitted toshare what Joseph Campbell in the Hero of a ThousandFaces called, “The Boon”, with the culture at large. Time, money, effort, generosity invested in the wave of renewalI described opens a better way forward for the futuregenerations.MAY • JUNE 2009Subscribe to The Journey!Only $25 per yearCall 440-223-1392Health Preservation of Northeast Ohio presentsHealth Preservation Association 2009 WorkshopOct. 17 - Chinese Yoga with Healing Qi - beginners & seniorsFor more information and/or to enroll visitwww.healthpreservation.netSessions will be led by local instructor James SievertEastlake IndoorFlea Market34600 Lakeshore Blvd., EastlakeVendor Spaces At Affordable Rates!Every Sat /Sun • 8am-5pm • 440-840-7031Eastlakefleamarket@sbcglobal.netTHE JOURNEY

Listening and LovemakingBy Psalm Isadora“Inside this new love, die. Your way begins on the other side. . .You are covered withthick cloud. Slide out the side. Die, and be quiet. Quietness is the surest sign that youhave died. Your old life was a frantic running from silence. The speechless full mooncomes out now.” – RumiListening can feel like death. To truly listen is tolet the ego die. Listening is creating space, talkingis filling it. If you really listen, you are notwaiting to speak and add your own experiences, you are totally involved with the other. This is a form ofmeditation, to listen and let your own thoughts drop away, one by one, as they arise from the endless waves of yourmind. Then you can disappear into the other, the one towhom you are listening. You can even listen to nature, atree, the ocean. Listen to their sounds, their feeling. Everythingis speaking. Everything is telling a story.Listen with more than your ears. Listen with your eyes, your touch, your taste and your smell. This is a beautifulway of listening to your friends and lovers. They are God’smirror, reflecting you to yourself. It is a way of being, a wayof letting go of doing. You don’t just hear the other, you feelthe other from deep inside your own stillness. Then your listening is a total experience, you can loseyourself. When you lose yourself, all you are really losingare your perceptions of yourself, which are blinding anddeafening thingsThe ego is like the sun - it wants to shine; it wants to beseen; like a sword and shield. Its job is to protect, to staybetween you and everything within and without you that itdoes not understand or cannot control. You have to let go ofprotecting yourself and soften your edges to become vulnerable. Then you are not just listening to the other’s words, you are receiving their whole way of being in this moment,in your body. Listening is a form of penetration. You have to sit deep inside yourself to really listen. Youhave to ground yourself in your own silence, in your ownwholeness, to hear and become aware. Listening is receptive. It is the feminine energy that does not need to defineitself through words because it feels truth. Its knowing isdeep and instinctual.Listening with the BodyListening is a form of prayer, a form of devotion. Bylistening, we come to know and understand the great mysteriesof Creation. Instead of praying by asking for things,we can pray by listening and accepting the true nature ofthings. Then our prayers come from our awe of the magnitudeof the ongoing Mystery we are all weaving with thestories of our lives, the fabric of our bodies, the thread ofbreath running through.Everything is a form of praying, including eating andsex. When most people eat an apple they eat it quickly becausethey think they are hungry. They take the apple intotheir body, chewing, distracted by other things. They arenot paying attention to the apple, to the life and body of theapple. And when they are done, they throw away what isleft, the core and seeds of the apple. This is eating like ananimal, without consciousness. A prayerfulness would beto look at the apple, to smell the apple, to see the color andshape. To think of the tree and the earth and the rain andthe sun. To think of the life of the apple as a creation of God.Everything is God; the apple is God. Then eating the appleis a kind of praying. The apple is a proof of grace provided by Nature, proofof Intelligence sustaining your body. The Intelligence mani-THE JOURNEYMAY • JUNE 2009PAGE TWENTY FIVE

fests itself in the creation of the apple and Intelligence manifestsitself in the creation of you. Intelligence is one, manifestedas many and all creation is caring for, providing for, itself. Just as the apple is providing for your nourishment inyour body, and your body will one day provide for the nourishmentof the apple tree.Meditation Exercise - Mindful EatingTake an apple, hold it in your hand, feel the skin of theapple on the skin of your hand. Become aware of the texture, the color, the shape and the weight of the apple. Beinterested in the apple as a new experience, as a microcosmfor the whole universe. Imagine the seed of this applein the warm, dark soil. Imagine the rain that fell and woke itup from its sleep. Imagine the sun energy that helped it toblossom and grow into fruition. Be aware you are eating anapple. When you chew the apple, chew only the apple, notyour ideas, memories, worries or fears. Be aware of yourbreath. Be aware of only this experience, let it wake you up.Another way of true listening is through sex. Most peopleuse sex to run away from themselves, to relieve themselvesfrom stress and anxiety. This is okay, but it is not comingfrom the soul, it is coming from the animal body. If you havesex this way, you miss out on so much. You take the otherperson’s body without really seeing it. You miss out on themiracle. In Tanta, sex is praying. The body is the wine andbread of God.Look at the other person, see in them their whole life, not just their body life, but their soul life. You can see themovement of the soul through the eyes. Psalm...Continued from page 26their soul, you will see it is the same as yours. Then you willdisappear. The ego does not like this; it fights to remain knownand separate. When we are born, we learn to say “I am.” But this is notthe soul. The soul is always free of the body. The ego doesnot want to be forgotten, but when it is you experience abeautiful freedom, you become one again with the Infinite. What you have known, the finite self, melts into the infiniteand unformed. You are back in the mysterious womb of creation. There is such joy in this moment, but we use all ourstrength of the mind to keep it from happening. But if you relax very deeply it will happen; it cannot helpbut happen. Relax by being with the other person deeply.Look at them, smell them and touch them. They are proof ofthe miracle of creation. Think of the ocean of days that broughtthem here to this moment with you, the ocean of experiencesand emotions. You have the same ocean in you. Canyou hold the vulnerability of this nakedness? Not the nakednessof the body but of the soul. Most people blind themselves. They hide from their nakednessand the other’s nakedness, the nakedness of thebody and the soul. This is the shame of original sin. We areafraid of our nakedness and we try to hide it, we exile ourselvesfrom heaven with our shame and self consciousness. This comes from the ego. When you can see your lover’s body is the body of God,then your lovemaking will be a deep listening, a praying. And when it is finished, you will not throw away the seedsfrom which your love can grow. Some disciples asked Jesus,“How will we know you?” He answered, “Through movementand stillness.” This is how we will come to know our soul, through movement and stillness, darkness and light, laughingand crying. Let your listening and your lovemaking be anactivity of the soul, a moving and stillness, a prayerfulness.Partner Tantra Exercise - Divine Eye and ISit across from your partner in a comfortable position.Become aware that you are breathing, become aware of thelength and quality of each inhale and exhale. See the wholecosmos in your partner’s eyes. Just relax. Just be aware youare breathing. Just be aware you are looking into yourpartner’s eyes. Only look into their eyes, not your worriesand fears or imagination. Let your thoughts come and gowithout struggle, just maintain awareness that you are breathingand maintaining the gaze. Let go of any expectations ofyourself or your partner.Take the cup of wine to your lip, it is the same as me;there is a slave opening the door to my heart but a queenlives inside; the slave is what you see, my body, my mind, but the queen is my soul, the pure light illuminating everythingfrom within. oh my love, oh my soul, my body is thebread, my blood the wine. the only way to know me is to takeme inside you in this silence, listen to my heart; know meand be knownPsalm Isadora has travelled and studied yoga, tantraand sufism in India and Turkey.
