III<strong>WAZA</strong> Membership Statistics<strong>WAZA</strong> in 2011<strong>WAZA</strong> Membership• Associations................................24• Institutions...............................258• Affiliates......................................16• Corporates..................................15• Life & Honorary........................ 101In 2011 <strong>WAZA</strong> membership grew by3,0% compared to 2010, thus leadingto a total number of members of 313(excluding life and honorary members).Emergency Relief Supportfor Japan and ThailandIn March 2011, following the tsunamidisaster in Japan, <strong>WAZA</strong> has createda new webpage to collect money forthe affected institutions. The publiccould get the latest information fromJAZA, have access to JAZA Facebookpage and also donate online. Theoperation “Donate for Japan” leadto a financial support, generatedfrom <strong>WAZA</strong> members as well asother supporters, in the magnitudeof 68,368.33 CHF (83,550.00 $ as of31 August 2011). Since November2011 nearly the whole of Thailand wasaffected by huge flooding, havinga great impact on wildlife. <strong>WAZA</strong>assisted to coordinate drugs andequipment to be sent to Thailandfrom Japan, Australia, Malaysia andSingapore. Thanks go to all supporterswithin the global <strong>WAZA</strong> network!7 th International Zoo& Aquarium MarketingConference, Granby, CanadaThe Marketing conference was heldfrom June 13 th to 16 th 2011 and hostedby the Zoo de Granby in Quebec,Canada. The event welcomed morethan 70 participants from 22 differentcountries. They were able to attenda variety of presentations, paneldiscussions and a workshop underthe theme of “Strategic Marketing inAction”. At the endof the conference the summarisingrecommendation concerning the UNDecade on biodiversity for the 66 th<strong>WAZA</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> Conference in Praguewas presented and adopted.International Cooperation• On 20 September Dr. Gerald Dick,<strong>WAZA</strong> Executive Director, took partin a signing ceremony in New Yorkin support of the UN Decade onBiodiversity. Together with 25 otherglobal organisations, such as FAO,WTO, CITES, IUCN and WWF <strong>WAZA</strong>is in support of biodiversity conservationglobally and will take part inthe work of a newly established taskforce under the auspices of the Conventionon Biological Diversity (CBD).• <strong>WAZA</strong> supported the activitiesfor bat conservation of the UNEPConvention on the Conservation ofMigratory Species of Wild Animalsduring the Year of the Bat. Numerousactivities in support of educationand conservation were carriedout in all continents.• <strong>WAZA</strong> entered a Memorandumof Understanding with AMMPA(Alliance of Marine Mammal Parksand Aquariums) and CITES (Conventionon International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Faunaand Flora) in order to strengthenthe relationship with organisationsin the field of marine mammals andinternational exchange of animals.Communication• <strong>WAZA</strong> established theConservation and SustainabilityResource Centrewww.unitedforconservation.orgoffers a unique collection of weblinks,initially about 600. Theinformation is freely available foreverybody and is a great resource inthe growing and often unclear filedof conservation organisations andactivities.• <strong>WAZA</strong> website has been updatedregularly, the <strong>WAZA</strong> membershipdirectory now contains all availableand updated information in realtime and events and monthly pressreleases are accessible on the web.Corporate members are introducedin a special section and advertisementswere generated for somepublications.• MembershipBrochurepublishedIn order to assistthe acquisitionof new membersand tobetter explainthe benefits ofbeing a <strong>WAZA</strong>member, thebrochureVoice of theGlobal Zoo andAquarium Community waspublished (printed and asdownload on www.waza.org).
