1. FOREWORD BY THE PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR
(RESEARCH AND INNOVATION)
‘Excellence, Innovation and Regional Engagement.’ This
is the phrase that summarizes the objectives of
the University of Ulster and was derived through
institution-wide consultation in the past academic year.
All three parts are highly relevant to research and,
together with the specifi c core objective to ‘undertake
excellent research in selected areas of activity’, make it
clear that research is, and will continue to be, a highly
prized activity of the University.
When our 17 Research Institutes were established
in the 2004-05 academic year those staff colleagues
with research outputs of the highest quality were designated as members. Over
time the number of members has increased, and the research resources of
the University are increasingly focussed on meeting their needs. Additionally
mechanisms have been put in place across all institutes to ensure the targeted
support of colleagues at earlier stages in research careers who have the potential
to emerge as signifi cant researchers in their own right. Our Research Institutes
will be supported to achieve longevity and establish a reputation amongst external
peers, research funders and research users.
This fi rst Annual Report documents a signifi cant body of work much of which is
internationally signifi cant. As a reader, you may be a member of another research
institution, perhaps seeking to collaborate with UU, or perhaps you are a graduate,
or soon-to-be graduate, considering postgraduate research as a starting-point in
your career, or perhaps you are involved in the private sector. You may even have
been responsible for funding some of the research, or you are seeking solutions or
expertise to solve a problem. Whatever your perspective, I hope that the material
contained in this Annual Report will be useful and informative. The precise work
underway in an institute may change with time, as will the Institute’s membership,
and annual reports will be one mechanism through which this evolution will be
tracked.
I commend each colleague whose achievements are documented in this report
for the excellence of her/his work and I assure every reader of the University’s
continuing commitment to supporting the achievement of excellence.

2. FOREWORD BY THE
RESEARCH INSTITUTE DIRECTOR
The strategic vision of the Research Institute Art
and Design is best embodied by the term ‘Engaged
Creativity’. It foregrounds its sustained commitment to
research, development, and knowledge and technology
transfer activities and to the building of strong links to
communities and a high relevance of its inquiries to
society.
The Research Institute is co-terminus with the Unit
of Assessment 63, Panel O, and constitutes one of fi ve
highest-priority research areas of the University of
Ulster. The majority of its members are situated in the
School of Art and Design, Belfast campus, and a signifi cant contribution is made
by a number of researchers in multi-media design and media arts in the School of
Creative Arts at Magee campus.
The Research Institute has developed its research strategy of ‘Engaged Creativity’
in line with the University’s forward-reaching research principles and aspirations
to (a) achieve international excellence in key disciplines, (b) foster intellectual and
professional development and (c) aim at a strategic breadth in the dissemination
of its research outcomes.
During the period 2005/6 the Research Institute Art and Design has been occupied
with the consolidation and expansion of its portfolio of research expertise,
knowledge and technology transfer and engagement in the community.
Central to its strategic activities is Interface: Research in Art, Technologies
and Design. This new Research Centre has been established since April 2004
based on a successful substantial SPUR II bid. It forms part of the ongoing multimillion
pound redevelopment of the University’s Belfast campus. Interface has
concentrated practice-based research in two key areas of expertise in the School
of Art and Design: Textile and Fine Art with a specifi c focus on the investigation
and redefi nition of inherited categories of value and the impact of digital media
and new technologies on the production, distribution and mediation of Art and
Design.
A substantial number of new research-active staff with a wealth of sustained
professional and development experience acquired and applied in a broad range
of creative practices has joined the School of Art and Design during the past
year. Alongside established members of the Research Institute they have made
a substantial contribution to the building of critical mass in areas such as Visual
Communication, Multi-media and Product Design as well as to the shaping of our
research environment.
A strong representation of researchers in Art and Design at international events
such as the 51st Venice Biennale 2005; Siggraph Fashion Show, Boston 2006; CAA
Annual conference, Boston 2006, and key roles in the FP6 NM2 and the Best
of British projects have given high visibility to our engagement in research and
development.
Knowledge and technology transfer plays a strategic role in bringing academic
and practice-based research and development to bear on businesses in the region
and cross-border. It fosters innovative and viable applications and solutions in the

creative industries, manufacturing and retail. MIDAS and Fusion projects are key
instruments in this process.
Another important instrument for the dissemination of our research and the
testing of ideas are the well received master classes in Design and Applied
Arts and the public seminars on Producing Publics that have attracted leading
experts from within the fi elds as well as diverse local and national audiences
to the practice-oriented and conceptual engagement of the Research Institute
and its members. They have enriched and enlivened the research culture in
Art and Design. And so have the many links with researchers across Schools
and Faculties in the University of Ulster, for instance the connections between
Multi-media Design and Medicine, between Engineering and Design, as well
as between the Built Environment and Art and Design. Recognised Research
Groups offer focused support for emergent inter- and cross-disciplinary
enquiry and exchange.
Thinking, experimenting and prototyping in the dynamic and complex fi eld of
contemporary cultural and creative practices has also received vital impulses
from the growing community of PhD and postgraduate students in Art and
Design.
The achievements of our researchers documented in this report give much to
be proud of and much to build on for the future of Art and Design research
in Northern Ireland and beyond. The Research Institute Art and Design is
committed to drive and support inter/national excellence and social relevance
in this fi eld.
