The university, founded in 1950, serves 800 students withan academic emphasis on career development and arts and sciences. Previously, Bonvillian served asprovost at Keuka College in Keuka Park, NY.Peter Brouwer (Ph.D., 1993, LAI) was promoted to the rank <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> secondary mathematicseducation at the State University <strong>of</strong> New York College at Potsdam.Joaquin Carbonara (Gifted Math Program faculty) is one <strong>of</strong> 60 teachers selected nationwide for aprestigious Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Junior High <strong>School</strong> Mathematics Teachingfrom the Mathematics Association <strong>of</strong> America. Carbonara is being honored for his consistentexcellent effort in developing the mathematical talents <strong>of</strong> junior high school students in GSE’sGifted Math Program.


18Marilyn Ciancio (Ed.M., 1982, LAI) received the Arts Advocate Award in March 2006 from theArts Council in Buffalo and Erie County as “Outstanding Supporter and Advocate <strong>of</strong> the Arts.”Ciancio has long championed the arts through her broadcasts on Adelphia’s local cable televisonchannels in Western New York. As ArtScope host for more than 10 years and Crossroads artscorrespondent, she has invited virtually every arts and cultural organization to appear on these twoAdelphia programs. She also records arts events such as Curtain Up! for broadcast, “creating evengreater awareness <strong>of</strong> the richness <strong>of</strong> the arts in our region,” the Arts Council said. In addition,Ciancio has volunteered for more than 30 years for groups including Studio Arena Theatre, <strong>UB</strong>Center for the Arts, Amherst Arts Committee, WNED-TV, and the Women’s Pavilion <strong>of</strong> the 2001Pam-Am Centennial.Nancy Cich (Ed.M., 1992, LAI) is currently teaching 5 th grade and is the elementary sciencecurriculum facilitator in the Newfane Central <strong>School</strong>s.Cornelius Cosgrove (Ph.D., 1986, LAI) is currently serving as chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong>English at Slippery Rock University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. Approximately 700 high school students from acrossWestern New York attended the event to learn more about science and scientific careers. Science Exploration Day issponsored by the Niagara Frontier Science Supervisors Association and the Science TeachersAssociation <strong>of</strong> New York State. Doran was on the committee that started the event more than 20years ago to interest high school students in science.Jutta Siefert Dudley (Ph.D., 1998, LAI) is an instructor in the Department <strong>of</strong> Geology at BrockportState College, and previously taught Regents earth science in the Pittsford <strong>School</strong> District. She iscurrently president elect <strong>of</strong> the Science Teachers Association <strong>of</strong> New York State (STANYS). Dudleyhas also served as chair <strong>of</strong> the Central Western section <strong>of</strong> STANYS, and has held many otherpositions at the section and state level. Bruce Johnstone (ELP faculty) has accepted the designation <strong>of</strong> Distinguished Scholar Leader withinthe Fulbright Program’s New Century Scholars Program. This program brings together 30outstanding scholars and pr<strong>of</strong>essionals each year to collaborate on a topic <strong>of</strong> global significance.Johnstone will lead the 2007/2008 cohort as they examine three themes related to the central topic<strong>of</strong> access and equity in higher education (www.cies.org/ncs). Kroll will serve a two-year term.LAI faculty, students, and staff were honored at the annual LAI Recognition Banquet in April 2006.Fenice Boyd received the Distinguished Faculty Award; Diane Truscott (Ph.D., 1991),Distinguished Alumni Award; Lynn Shanahan (faculty), Best Teacher-Educator Award; NancyBailey (doctoral student), Promising Scholar Award; and Jason Otto (master’s student), PromisingTeacher Award.David Lazerson (Ph.D., 1986, LAI) reports that the cable channel Showtime has made a movieabout him and his racial harmony group, Project CURE. The group was formed shortly after therace riots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn during the 1990s. The movie, “Crown Heights,” stars HowieMandel as Lazerson, and was recently released in video stores. “Crown Heights” is based onLazerson’s 2004 book, Sharing Turf: Race Relations After the Crown Heights Riots (BalladProductions). Lazerson also received a $10,000 grant in March 2006 from Arts in <strong>Education</strong> to useblack light theater to enhance instruction for students with pr<strong>of</strong>ound special needs. Previously, fromFebruary 2005 to January 2006, Lazerson received five grants totaling $22,500 to use the arts toimprove educational experiences for senior citizens and students with special needs.Jennifer Livingston (Ph.D., 2000, CSEP), a research scientist at <strong>UB</strong>’s Research Institute onAddictions (RIA), received a Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (in September 2005)for $531,904 from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The grant provides fiveyears <strong>of</strong> support for mentored training, advanced coursework, and data collection in the field <strong>of</strong>adolescent substance use and sexual risk behavior. The goals <strong>of</strong> this study are to: (a) identify thepredictors <strong>of</strong> adolescent alcohol use and sexual behavior; (b) examine the relationship betweeninitiation <strong>of</strong> risk behavior and the experience <strong>of</strong> negative sexual outcomes; and (c) gain anunderstanding <strong>of</strong> the contexts in which adolescents initiate risk behavior and experience sexualvictimization. Livingston’s mentors on this project are Maria Testa, RIA, and Michael Windle,University <strong>of</strong> Alabama at Birmingham.Wen Ma (Ph.D., 2004, LAI) received Honorable Mention Outstanding Dissertation Award for apaper based on his dissertation research, “Participatory Dialogue and Participatory Learning in aDiscussion-Based <strong>Graduate</strong> Seminar,” at the 2005 National Reading Conference Annual Meeting inMiami, FL.20

Nozaki was alsoawarded $4,335 from the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Leave Program for her project, “WarMemory, Nationalism, and <strong>Education</strong> in Postwar Japan: Ienaga Saburo and the History <strong>of</strong> theTextbook Controversy, 1945-1997.”Gina Pannozzo (Ph.D., 2005, CSEP) is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Department <strong>of</strong> Foundations in<strong>Education</strong> at Virginia Commonwealth University (gmpannozzo@vcu.edu), where she teachesgraduate courses in Advanced <strong>Education</strong>al Psychology and Research Methods. She is the coprincipalinvestigator for a large-scale study examining the relationship among teacher reportedgrading and assessment practices, student reported motivation and engagement, and standardizedtest scores across grades 4 to 11. The study, “The Influence <strong>of</strong> Teacher Grading and AssessmentPractices on Student Motivation, Engagement and Achievement,” involves approximately 450teachers and 10,000 students from schools in districts in and around the Richmond area.Antonio Perry (Ed.M., 2001, LAI) was among 20 athletes and contributors inducted into theElmira Free Academy Sports Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame in February 2006. Perry was an All-Twin Tiers fullbackhis junior and senior years, and in 1994 received the sportsmanship award given by local <strong>of</strong>ficials inElmira, NY. Perry also played outside linebacker at <strong>UB</strong>, where he led the team in tackles his senioryear and was selected to the All-MAC conference team.Barbara Peters (Ed.D., 2002, ELP) has been appointed superintendent in the Tonawanda City<strong>School</strong> District, beginning August 2006. Peters has been with the district since 2002, and in hercurrent position as assistant superintendent, she oversees technology assessment, staff developmentand various aspects <strong>of</strong> personnel. To date, she has been responsible for 159 progress reports to stateand federal institutions.Vivian Pokrzyk (Ph.D., 1995, LAI) has retired from teaching middle school science in the Lewiston-Porter Central <strong>School</strong> District. She is currently vice-president <strong>of</strong> STANYS (Science TeachersAssociation <strong>of</strong> New York State) and will become president <strong>of</strong> this association in 2007. Pokrzyk hastaught elementary science instruction for LAI for several years and this summer will <strong>of</strong>fer a newcourse, Action Research for Science Teachers. She has also served as chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Northwesternsection <strong>of</strong> STANYS, and as a science mentor for intermediate level science teachers.Bradley Porfilio (Ph.D., 2005, ELP) was selected to participate in SAGE’s (Scholars and Advocatesfor Gender Equity) New Scholars in Gender and Gender Equity <strong>Education</strong> Seminar at the April2006 Annual Meeting <strong>of</strong> the American <strong>Education</strong>al Research Association in San Francisco.Thomas Raco (Ed.D., 1981, ELP) is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> art at the National Technical Institute for theDeaf, a college <strong>of</strong> the Rochester Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology, in Rochester, NY. He recently received agrant award from the Graphic Arts <strong>Education</strong> and Research Foundation to promote graphiccommunication as a viable career path for deaf/hard-<strong>of</strong>-hearing students, increase postsecondaryretention <strong>of</strong> deaf students in this field, and provide an as-yet untapped resource for the graphiccommunication field. The award, $66,419 for the first year <strong>of</strong> a three-year project, will fund thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> an interactive web site targeted toward deaf high school students.


22Thomas Ramming (Ed.D., 1994, ELP), Grand Island school superintendent for the past threeyears, is retiring in June 2006. Before coming to Grand Island, Ramming worked for six years as theassistant superintendent for human resources in the Williamsville <strong>School</strong> District. He previouslyheld comparable positions in the West Seneca <strong>School</strong> District and Orleans-Niagara BOCES.Ramming began his career in 1974 as a high school social studies teacher in Royalton Hartland. Heand his wife, Kate, an elementary teacher in Royalton-Hartland who is also retiring at the end <strong>of</strong> theschool year, are planning to remain in Western New York. Ramming has been teaching one course asemester at <strong>UB</strong> for more than a decade, and hopes to continue teaching at the college level. He’s alsoplanning to do consulting work in human resources and labor relations.Andrew Ray (Ph.D., 1994, ELP) has been appointed the administrative principal for the RochesterChildren’s Zone planning initiative. He will lead a core team <strong>of</strong> educators when they present theplanning initiative concept to community stakeholders in Rochester, NY.Amy Reynolds (CSEP faculty) was invited to speak in March 2006 by the University at BuffaloUndergraduate Advising Counsel on “Multicultural Competence in Advisement and Helping.”Kimberly Rogers (ELP faculty) was appointed to the ASHE (Association for the Study <strong>of</strong> Higher<strong>Education</strong>) Nominations Committee for 2006 and the ASHE/Lumina Dissertation AwardsCommittee for 2006-2007. Sanfilippo was selected based on herdemonstrated commitment to the Falk <strong>School</strong> mission and its students, by providing a challenginglearning environment that inspires intellectual curiosity, promotes critical thinking, developscharacter education, and promotes ethical values.Ramona SantaMaria (ELP doctoral student) received an <strong>Education</strong> Opportunity Program (EOP)Faculty Merit Award in April 2006 at <strong>UB</strong>’s 39 th Annual EOP Honors Convocation.Claudine SchWeber (Ph.D., 1977, ELP) received a Fulbright award in Fall 2005 to focus on e-learning teaching and training at the Polytechnic <strong>of</strong> Namibia. She developed a faculty trainingprogram, worked with the Center for Teaching and Learning, gave presentations at the Polytechnicand the U.S. Cultural Affairs Center, and provided assistance to USAID on technology-orientedgrants. SchWeber is currently chair <strong>of</strong> the doctor <strong>of</strong> management program at the University <strong>of</strong>Maryland University College.Gail Staines (Ph.D., 1993, ELP) has been appointed university librarian <strong>of</strong> Saint Louis University inSt. Louis, MO. Prior to this appointment, Staines served for eight years as the executive director <strong>of</strong>the Western New York Library Resources Council in Buffalo, NY, and taught in <strong>UB</strong>’s <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>Informatics, Department <strong>of</strong> Library and Information Studies.
